This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

I had elights. Lasted 5 days Hmm

Ledare · 09/03/2014 18:06

I couldn't do a day on cig-a-likes.

Pubes, glad you like the video. I found the idea fascinating as well!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 18:39

I've had Gamucci (3 different versions including disposable), e lites, Sky Cig (that's now my back up), a few different disposables and a vype. They just don't satisfy and I couldn't manage a day on any of them, which is why I nearly didn't buy the vapouriser. Am now 8 days with no smokes, longest I have EVER went...

I can sing again! But have a dreadful cold. :( And another bonus, this is doing wonders whenever I have a sweet tooth as it tastes like lovely sweet fruit. Pineapple mixed with the Opal fruits is awesome, I am in love!

My Evod keeps leaking though, I can't figure out why. Confused I am not very good at this vaping business as I don't seem to be getting on with any clearos/tanks/batteries. I think I may be overheating them, hence the burning on and off all the time, no matter what I use :(

littlemisssarcastic · 09/03/2014 18:50

Thanks Allergic and magimedi. It's reassuring to know that the general consensus is to go for the CE5.

I will tell my friend. Would that one be a 510 thread too?

Ledare · 09/03/2014 18:52

I didn't make myself clear last night btw, I meant, will we still get smokers' lip wrinkles!

Allergic, did you get the lemon sorbet from Dark Star? Lemon isn't to my taste but happy to pass it on.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/03/2014 18:57

Where's your evod leaking from schro?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 19:03

It's coming through the mouth piece. I have dried the tube several times and emptied/made sure it wasn't filled above the tube and that the mouth piece was in tight before it was turned the other way but it still happens after using about 1/4 of the tank, not straight away. Very confused and lovely vape stuff selling man today just told me "sometimes these things happen" :(

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/03/2014 19:21

This page has a few tips you can try (also very useful for GS-H2 as they're built the same as evods).

Allergictoironing · 09/03/2014 19:36

Ledare I have the Sherbet Lemon from Alchemist's Cupboard to try yet, though from the smell I think it may be a bit sharp for me. I think I like the Lemon Meringue so much because it has the creamy sweetness aspect as well as the citrus bite.

Schro the cheapest cotton buds that can be bought are your friend - I mean the biggest packet in the pound shop type of thing - as they are stingy enough with the ends that they can fit into a mouthpiece to clear it of any excess fluid. I occasionally get fluid in the tubes for no apparent reason, just poke one of the cheapie cotton buds down to clear it. Just be careful that you haven't left a chunk of the cotton wool inside the mouthpiece then wonder why your vape isn't as satisfying like I did the other day. Just poke it back out with the (now bare) end. If you use a CE4 type clearo, the ones where the mouthpiece comes off for you to fill through, take that off before poking the cotton bud down it.

MaggieMcGill · 09/03/2014 20:22

Katie we have two! One is in a tattoo shop which I've not been into yet but he is on fb the other one is vape right . ItS two seconds from my work.

Per I'm afraid to say that it's not changed that much. Castle and Wallace monument is still there but port street is a bit shite at the moment

KatieScarlett2833 · 09/03/2014 20:23

In the centre or the High Street Maggie?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 20:30

Thank you for that link!

Will buy lots of cheapie cotton buds, have been using rolled up kitchen roll!

KatieScarlett2833 · 09/03/2014 20:41

That's Tuesday sorted Grin

MaggieMcGill · 09/03/2014 20:54

City Walls isn't to far from there neither is the outback. Although Bellhaven have just banned vaping in all their pubs so that rules out city walls.

Allergictoironing · 09/03/2014 23:02

Schro make sure they are the mega cheapo ones, even most supermarket own brand ones are a bit thick on the ends. If you have an Asda nearby, go to that scruffy section they have with loads of ultra cheap never-heard-of brands of basic household stuff like (mine's tucked away furthest from the useful stuff) - I got a pack of 800 for a quid there Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 23:41

I do have an Asda and I love that aisle, packs of 3 packing boxes for £1! :o

I must say I've craved a cig a bit today, but only the idea of it really as I am now hating the smell of them and I am certain I would be sick of I tried one... Confused I don't know if it's because I have been struggling to get the vaping right the past couple of days so have been doing it less than I probably want to/should. :(

KatieScarlett2833 · 10/03/2014 07:26

Tesco also do the el cheapo cotton buds as DH discovered yesterday when I asked him to pick some more up for me.
"No, DH, not Johnsons. The scraggy cheapo ones that have practically no cotton, if the bud is thick or shaped flat, I don't want them."
Not understanding they were for vaping purposes, he was like, Eh??? Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 10/03/2014 08:10

Grin They're known as 'shit earwigs' in our house. Evods have a slightly wider central pipe - you can probably fit a Johnson's down there. I'm thinking of getting some pipe cleaners, Was it you who was using those Maggie?

MsWazowski · 10/03/2014 09:20

I've been vaping for 2 weeks now, was all going well until yesterday when I tried an iclear 16 after reading good reviews. I'm really disappointed. The mouthpiece keeps filling up and spitting out hot juice. I have to remove it and wipe it with rolled up tissue after every other puff.

Never had this with the cheap ce4s I was using. I've googled but can't find anything. Has anyone else had any issues? Any tips? Is it just a dodgy one, or is this what they do?

Cantabile · 10/03/2014 09:46

My iClear 16s don't do that. In fact, they give me the best vape I've ever had, but my brother had this problem with either one of those or a GS-H2. Check that the little plastic bit is on the top of the post - my brother's had disappeared, probably wasn't on properly to start with and fell off when he took it apart.

Also, there's a little O ring on the mouthpiece, check that that's there, and make sure everything is screwed up properly.

MsWazowski · 10/03/2014 09:55

Is it the white plastic bit that covers the metal bit with the wicks in? Maybe it needs pushing down a bit, I'll have a meddle and see if it does anything.

Cantabile · 10/03/2014 09:56

Hangsen Black Tea is surprisingly nice, and so is their Orange. The Chocolate Cream is passable, and will benefit from mixing with caramel perhaps, or maybe orange? Liquorice is weird. I think the clearo I was trying it with had something nasty in it which I hadn't cleaned out properly, so I'm doing that now....

I am going through my flavours, and I think I'll have a few going begging, so watch this space!

MsWazowski · 10/03/2014 10:02

Hmm, it doesn't push down any further. Everything looks like it's there. I've got a spare, so I'll try that.

Not sure id like liquorice.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 10/03/2014 10:37

Have given up using the Evod today and just using one of the CE4s with the bigger battery. Still on pineapple mixed with Opal fruits, very yum! Down to 11mg from 18 now.

Liquorice sounds a bit odd to vape!
