This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Schro don't confuse elasticity with things like sagging. Elasticity means it can stretch if needed but then go back without causing wrinkling, sort of acting like a fine rubber sheet would. It's when it loses elasticity that we get sagging "baggy" skin, because it can't pull itself back together after being stretched. Think nice new bra (or knickers), vs. old knackered bra (or knickers) where the elastic has gone a bit meh. One fits nice and snugly, the other looks baggy & doesn't support as well

Ledare · 08/03/2014 18:30

And Schro - you are young and gorgeous!

Will we all still have "smoker's lip wrinkles" from vaping? I guess so.

Allergictoironing · 08/03/2014 18:51

Erm I don't HAVE "smoker's lip" wrinkles anyway! Though that could be because I have too much body fat to get facial wrinkles Wink.

Ledare · 08/03/2014 19:00
Grin
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/03/2014 19:09

Allergic, Unfortunately I am not confusing it, I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome which causes highly elastic skin. If mines gets much worse, I could rival that mr stretch from the circus of horrors. Blush

Thank you Ledare, certainly not feeling it though! :o

Did everyone else feel like they had an awful cold after quitting? I'm feeling it badly and after having a look, apparently it's common.

Allergictoironing · 08/03/2014 19:15

Ah OK Schro, I know a little about the basics of Ehlers Danlos & do understand it's a completely different matter. TBH no idea whether the effect would be noticeable to you, that's too specialised by far for me to know. Maybe ask your consultant?

BTW a friend of mine years ago was diagnosed with Ehler's Danlos & had it explained to her that it's a minor genetic mutation that runs in families, had great fun going round telling everyone she and her siblings are mutants Grin. And yes this was a fully adult woman in her 20's.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/03/2014 19:20

Haha! I think I have probably been guilty of that same thing at some point! There are some aspects of it that can be hilarious to show or tell, like the crazy skin.

Ahk, even if I have uber stretchy skin, it will smell better at least! :o

Allergictoironing · 08/03/2014 19:36

In my friend's case, she didn't have any blatant symptoms, she was only diagnosed because her sister kept getting joint problems training for marathons & when the sister was diagnosed they suggested all her siblings should be. But with hindsight my friend was very pale skinned, white blonde hair, exceptionally flexible (double jointed practically all over), things that aren't diagnostic of EDS but do tend to go with it.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/03/2014 19:43

At least she now knows, very helpful if/when she has children as it's a 50% chance that it is passed on.

MaggieMcGill · 09/03/2014 09:49

Schro I seem to remember my face getting really dry and then my lips. I looked liked poo and thought WTF! Ii reckon it's just detoxing, I think it's quite normal. Hey! Are you in Glasgow? I stay in Stirling so not too far from you Smile We have 2 shops here.

MaggieMcGill · 09/03/2014 09:52

Vaping shops, not just any old shops Grin

LucyLasticBand · 09/03/2014 09:54

feeling ill lately, wondered if i should change from 18 mg to 12?
it is more often when i am at work and vaping less though.

KatieScarlett2833 · 09/03/2014 10:00

Vaping shops in Stirling Maggie?
Pray tell?
I'm off next week and quite fancy checking them out, Stirling is only half an hour away and I hardly ever go there unless for work.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 11:29

Yes I'm in Glasgow? Fancy a wee vaping meet up and go to a shop? I could get to Stirling. Yy to detoxing!

Bought pineapple today from a Glasgow seller, omg it is delicious! Also bought a CE4 (pretty one) and a clearo all together for £12!

Allergictoironing · 09/03/2014 11:33

Schro a CE4 is the clearo type, not the battery type?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 11:41

Is it? It came with a 1100 mah battery, or something lol. It's the battery that's pretty.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/03/2014 11:56

Yes, the battery is an ego and the clearo is the CE4 part.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 09/03/2014 12:00

I watched that video, Ledaire, it's fascinating! How brilliant if your body just gently lets go of the nic addiction in its own good time - it would be possible to be a truly 'social' vaper eventually, just having a low nic vape occasionally on a night out without setting off cravings.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 09/03/2014 12:01

Ahh, learn something new everyday! It was like a starter set thing.

Jux · 09/03/2014 12:04

Maggie, you have two vape shops?!!!

We have a shop which we rent out to someone else. When they leave - which they will eventually - I am toying with the idea of running a vape shop myself.

littlemisssarcastic · 09/03/2014 16:42

Can anyone recommend a really cheap starter kit please? My friend has shown an interest in vaping but is very low on funds so just wants to try it without much outlay to see if she likes it.
Any links to very cheap starter kits would be appreciated.

I did see a cheap starter kit at zebra but not heard of zebra ecigs before so if anyone would recommend them, I'd be interested to hear what you think of them too.
Thanks.

Allergictoironing · 09/03/2014 17:17

Hi Littlemiss. From a quick look, the Zebra seems to be a cigalike type. I know some people are happy with these but they don't seem to satisfy many/most vapers as much as the battery & clearo types.

If your friend wants to go down a very safe but as cheap as possible route, I would suggest trying something like this. If there could be a little more money available, this seems to be reckoned a very good option (has spare batteries & clearos, which the cheapest options don't)

Allergictoironing · 09/03/2014 17:50

Having given my Alchemist's Cupboard order over a week of careful steeping, I just tried the Lemon Meringue Pie. I think I'm in love!

magimedi · 09/03/2014 17:53

Littlemiss That second link Allergic gave is the one I would go for.

I started with a cigalike (Sky cigs) & was never really satisfied with it.

Maggie you've just reminded me of my first trip to Stirling. Walked through the town and then asked where the rest of it was Grin....was 25 years ago.

4 weeks no fags. Seemed to have settled on RY4 and toffee caramel as my flavours of choice.
