This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

MistressDeeCee I am really really excited to learn there are vape shops in Greenwich! I can get there very easily.

Ledaire, definitely have a go at rebuilding, it's a piece of piss and very satisfying when you get the hang of it. I use 3mm silica and 0.2 kanthal wire, both from stealthvape. You'll also need something to read ohms. If you don't have a battery that reads ohms, you can use a normal multimeter (requires steadier hands than mine) or there's a gadget you can get to screw in the base with coil attached, costs about £15. I'll see if I can find the link where I got mine. Expect your first attempt to take about an hour and be not very good. I have it down to 5 mins per coil now, it costs about 2p and I've been using the same atomisers since october. Also they're better than the coils they came with (GS-H2)

That's good to know. I'm secretly hoping it's fabulous. I've got the batteries and charger all ready for when my order gets here. I've bought 2 and some iclear 30s.
It's like waiting for Santa the year I was getting a bike Confused

The iclear 30s are fabulous on the big mods. We use them on the itaste 134 and the Vamo v5.

There is a bottom coil version (iClear 30b) too which is a good piece of kit to have in your collection, I find some flavours work better with a bottom coil than a top and vice versa.

You've bought two SVDs though? How come two?

Hurrah! Have sorted my problem with new tank, seems that Opal fruits just has a weird burnt flavour in my tank unfortunately (was fine in store on their CE4). Took it all apart, scrubbed the tank and ended up having to change the coil as I could not get the taste out of it, have however kept old coil to clean...
Back to strawberry minty lovelyness! Thank god as I started smoking the skycig in desperation! Gutted a bit as that vape shop only use 20% PG so were much nicer on the throat.

Was tempted to splurge on a new battery earlier but think I will wait...

Damn you FastTech I want my new vv battery! Spinner is on charge, and my standard battery just doesn't give the same quality of vape. Yes I can put up with it while charging is going on, it's not like I don't HAVE 2 spare batteries. But I want to use my shiny precious Sad

Cantabile · 08/03/2014 13:31

This morning I got a nice surprise from FastTech! 5 flavours I'd forgotten I'd ordered Grin. I have liquorice, black tea, chocolate cream, butterscotch, and orange. What a lovely day for it!

Shinyitis is a dangerous thing.

My Snoop Dogg battery is very good. It's slightly uncomfortable as it's thicker and heavier than I'm used to, and the iClear 16 is a smaller diameter. But it gives a good vape, so I think I might just about cope Wink

I'm hoping my new precious will be sturdy, the reviews seem to think so.
I am cack handed in the extreme so need kit that can take some punishment.
I love that fast tech publish a photo of your order prior to despatch. Just heightens the anticipation to get your hands on the parcel, genius Grin

Oh. My. God. The butterscotch is gorgeous. Smooth and creamy and just utterly yummy.

Yes, I like that about FT, too. It does heighten the anticipation, though admittedly I haven't actually looked at my emails for a while recently Blush (too much spam coming to me, and my filters seem to have forgotten how to work).

Damn I'm a twit! Was on the Banana Milkshake, couldn't understand why it was tasting so mild even on the standard battery (which usually gives a slightly harsher vape). Until I looked closely & realised that when I'd cleaned the tube on that GS-H2 out this morning I'd managed to leave a little chunk of the cotton wool partially blocking the damned tube.

I think I should humbly submit myself as winner of the "stupid and unobservant twit of the week" award! Blush. GS-H2 cleared and back on the freshly charged spinner, life is back to normal apart from my embarrassment.

I would laugh except I've done that myself. Is the banana any good?

Both my precious' are charging due to the accident. Nightmare!

Allergictoironing · 08/03/2014 14:31

I like the banana milkshake, though I can see it not being to everyone's taste. Definitely slightly more Nesquik than Crusha (if you know those 2 brands)

I have a question. My beloved chocolate 2.4% has started to taste burnt no matter what.

Could it be that because I have been smoking 2.0% in other flavours for the best part of two weeks that it is actually that the nicotine level is too high?

I found this video which seems to support the idea:

I also have bleeding gums Sad
Report
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/03/2014 17:32

Ledare, I think you might be right. I had been getting that horrid burnt taste but as I posted earlier, it seems to have went after cleaning the tube and changing over to my weaker strawberries and mint flavours. Even DPs tasted burnt to me and mines even after changing tank, and then changing the coil again. Only went when I ditched certain flavours. :(

Report
Ledare · 08/03/2014 17:38

I thought it was my coils / clearos. Gutting, but ultimately good news if true. Buy 10 ml in 0% in your favourite flavours (Opal Fruits sounds awesome) and try watering them down.

Report
Allergictoironing · 08/03/2014 17:51

Ledare was told that bleeding gums is not uncommon in people who have given up smoking. Blood circulation is greatly improved by giving up, so any tendency to bleeding gums that may have been masked by the effects of smoking are now obvious.

Oh. I have a blood-clotting disorder but haven't told my consultant I have stopped smoking cigarettes. I should be taking my meds! I'm an idiot Grin

Check with your consultant! Being serious here, the damage done to the body by smoking isn't just lung diseases but circulation, digestion, skin etc. That's why they talk about smoking related heart disease.

Heart pumps the blood around the body, heart function improves so circulation improves.
Blood flows through arteries and veins; blood vessels are less congested and less rigid so blood flow improves.

Nice side effects due to improved circulation can include:
Skin condition improves, it gets more elastic, less dry and "papery"
Same with hair, nails
Digestion improves
Injuries heal faster (though bruises may show easier)
Improved energy levels in general
Less tendency to minor illnesses e.g. colds
Even affects the chances of getting cancer that's not normally considered to be directly smoking related (told that by my gynae)
In some people can reduce the incidence or severity of certain chronic skin conditions e.g. HS

I have a blueberry 0%, might use that to water down. I think some of the fruity flavours just taste burnt in general now.

After thinking it was my clearo and buying a new tank, spare coils and using another coil, I am now switching between both of those. It was definitely the flavours at least partly.

I don't like the Opal fruits. :(

I hope skin doesn't become more elastic, mines is awful already!
