This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Vaping vision has a fruity bubblegum and they do a 5 bottle pick n pix for £12.99. I used them when I first started and there stuff is good.

Shona, it really is easy. I can't quite believe it myself. I just wish I'd discovered it years ago. I'll be 6 whole months fag free on Wednesday.

Dwerf · 31/03/2014 16:51

It's definitely the clearos as to why I'm burning so much liquid, I've managed to vape about 2 or 3ml in three hours. Shit bleeding things (though I do love the clouds of vapour)

SoleSource · 31/03/2014 17:02

I wonder how long cap king has been around for? The method we use. Has to be new doesn't it?

SoleSource · 31/03/2014 17:04

Va p I Ng. Bloody autocorrect. Not cap king fgs

magimedi · 31/03/2014 17:10

Sole your auto corrects make me Grin

Capering, capking, - if I get it wrong it's just typos as am on a desktop!

Looking at Wiki it's been around for about 10 years.

Ok, it's DP's birthday this week and he has been wanting a pipe shaped vapouriser and I want to surprise him, any suggestions?

SoleSource · 31/03/2014 18:17

Ten years?????? Noooooooooooooooooooooooo

Allergictoironing · 31/03/2014 18:26

Don't feel too bad Sole - if you read the Wiki article you'll see that it was only really exported from China nearer 6-7 years ago. And I'm pretty sure the proper tank/battery combos like most of us on the thread are using arrived a bit later than that.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/03/2014 18:57

The Smok E-Pipe seems to be the main branded one Schro.

There are a lot of independent pipe mod makers as well, if you have a bigger budget. This thread should provide lots of inspiration and links.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/03/2014 18:58

Dwerf, are you using a dual coil clearomiser? They get through a lot of juice!

Ledare · 31/03/2014 19:05

Thanks for the Vaping Vision testers link. I had forgotten about that. I have ordered two flavours I might enjoy based on my liking Cocomel and Toffee Popcorn, and three that I think I will hate. Based on previous experience I will love them Grin

I vaped in front of a very upper-crust solicitor today!

TheFutureMrsB · 31/03/2014 19:44

We rarely buy juices online and get them from either the many ecig shops in my local town centre or from the market. There's quite a few shops, 4 I think in the town and then 2/3 stalls on the market. My DP tends to get them from the market mostly as he will haggle with the seller (whilst I stand there like this Blush )

TheFutureMrsB · 31/03/2014 19:47

I think I've broken my tank :( it's all clouded up and I'm thinking the spearmint juice I had was just too much for the poor thing, have emptied it, washed it and re-filled it with a PG based Vimto with a little bit of VG liquid mixed into it to get rid of the throat hit that I hate so much.

Just hoping that the tank holds out until tomorrow as I don't think there's any spare ones here anymore.

Allergictoironing · 31/03/2014 19:48

FOUR shops AND market stalls? I have nothing, nada, zilch locally, it's either on line or well over an hour's travel in a direction I never go in to buy in a real shop (or market). Envy Envy Envy

TheFutureMrsB · 31/03/2014 20:01

Ah Allergic there wasn't any at all until last June/July when the first shop opened and now it seems they are popping up everywhere! Even the key cutting man has got in on it and now his shop is covered in e-cig stuff with the key cutting bits stuffed in the corner lol! The first shop is overpriced and has mainly tobacco flavoured juices but the others are quite good.

My DP bought 4 juices (Vimto, pineapple, cola cube & blueberry) and 5 coil things for £8 on Saturday, I left him there haggling with the man and went into the card shop!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/03/2014 20:50

Yep, sounds like you have a tank-cracker, TheFuture Sad

You shouldn't really be using it if it's gone foggy so do get replacements asap. What brand was the liquid? I've not heard of spearmint causing a problem before. If you really like the flavour it's worth investing in a pyrex clearo.

I share your haggling pain - my DDad used to haggle at charity jumble sales Blush

Allergictoironing · 31/03/2014 20:53

I think there are a couple that sell very basic starter kits etc. in town, but the best is the UK Skunkworks shop which has a real Ego starter kit for %60 (the kind you can get on line for about £25), then there's the little "bitsa" shop that has a small range of carts that go with one particular cigalike. Next best is what they have in Asda!

Dwerf · 31/03/2014 21:22

plenty yes, I think I am, they do have two wicks, that'll be why then.

A year ago there were no vaping shops in my city, now one chain has three shops and there's at least another three or four actual shops. Many of the corner shops now sell vaping stuff also. There's a shop ust 15 mins walk away from me that sells juice. Icluding nougat. I wanna try nougat!

The effects of nicotine on human health

Good video for newbie's.

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 01:18

Apologies f this video has already been posted.

TJuice wickedliquid are two e liquid online shops recently recommended to me.

Cantabile · 01/04/2014 08:54

Vaping Vision testers, Ledare?? How did I miss this?!!!!! Grin please tell (wheedle)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/04/2014 09:10

Vaping Vision 5 bottle pick-n-mix

This is where I got my first ever lot of juice Smile It works out as around £2.60/10ml, so not actually as cheap as Premier e-cigs at £2/10ml (both are Hangsen) but I haven't compared p&p.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/04/2014 09:13

This site looks interesting. You can get big bundles of samples - all 1 or 2ml. You don't get a choice of strength but it could be handy just to try lots of flavours.

Ledare · 01/04/2014 09:25

Oh, that looks good, Plenty!

Thanks for the video, Sole.

"40% of U.K physicians believe that nicotine is the active carcinogen in cigarettes" Shock

Allergictoironing · 01/04/2014 10:41

I've just come back from seeing the nurse at my GP for blood pressure checks, and she just happens to be the nurse who does the stop smoking clinic there. This is the first time I've been to the GPs since my last ever cigarette so was happily telling her she could put on my notes that I was now an EX smoker officially, rather than the 2 a day I'd reported to the GP last visit.

She was very pleased for me, obviously knew a fair bit about the subject as we were discussing nicotine levels etc. and she was happy that nicotine was virtually zero health risk in vaping quantities, but hadn't really seen clearo & battery kit - her main concern about them was the crap that's occasionally been found in cartomisers, so I explained what goes into the decent liquids, emphasised I would always get from reputable traders etc.

She told me that recently she's started to get people who have given up smoking by vaping, reduced their nicotine down to 0%, but now want help in giving up vaping itself. Might I see this as a problem in the long run she asked? My response was why would I want to give up vaping? If anything, I looked on it as a way of helping me from nibbling etc if I get stressed & with all the flavours available it would IMO work as a weight loss tool. She looked very thoughtful at that Grin
