This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Maggie I have just got home with a throwy uppy toddler and found that the package you sent came today. Very much appreciated after today and the evod seems to be sorted, I think the liquids from that shop I had been buying from had been dodgy as after changing wick and putting in some of the orange cream you sent, it's delicious! I will now be ordering liquid from online, as the place we have here is obviously not great! They did tell me it can be used straight away, bit I watched them mix it? Should it have been steeped then?

Anyway, thank you so much! Especially as DP's clearo went today and we were both pretty much about to give up!

EvenBetter · 20/03/2014 00:00

Sorry to be the annoying person asking for stupid advice, but I want a shisha type thing, just vapour, no nicotine or fannying about, but I know that a lot of the liquids are dodgy.
Any ideas where I can get a shisha type vaping e-thing?!

(I smoked an actual shisha in Malaysia like it was an umbilical cord, I wouldn't get off it and got more apple flavoured tobacco on it after my first go. Was pukimg all the next day, I later discovered that one shisha is the equivalent to 200 fags! Oops!)

magimedi · 20/03/2014 08:56

No one who asks anything is annoying, Even - it's the point of the thread.

I am not sure wher you get nicotine free shisha pens from - but am certain someone will be along soon who does!

OP posts:
Allergictoironing · 20/03/2014 09:18

Morning EvenBetter. There are 2 elements to vaping - the substance vaped, and the device used to deliver the vapour.

Any of the various shisha pens, Egos, etc. work as a delivery device; you can look further back in this and the previous threads for advice, summaries and recommendations on which are good/cheap/simple. You can also easily find something that suits your particular style taste by some internet browsing.

The e-liquid is where you would define whether you vape nicotine or not. Virtually all the decent makers of e-liquid offer a range of nicotine levels including a 0% option - again, going back through this & previous threads should give you some decent recommendations of where to buy good quality e-liquid from reliable sellers. You just have to make sure that you specify 0% when you order.

Remember that with the exception of the cigalikes (which only take specially made cartridges) any liquid can be used in any make of delivery device as you just need to top up the "tank" (also known as a clearo/clearomiser) with whatever flavour liquid you fancy.

Ledare · 20/03/2014 18:00

I am absolutely loving the clearo which came with my new battery. I keep imagining the Bakelite design on something more substantial...

In other news, I was delighted to see that my local corner shop is now selling a basic battery, USB charger, clearos and a wide variety of flavours. Upon asking, the chap said that they were all, "normal" nicotine level. His colleague clarified that they were zero nicotine.

I'm not sure if selling vaping products to presumably young people not yet addicted to cigarettes is a good thing. This is the sort of establishment which sells a lot of cheap cider and alco pops by the way. Is vaping cool now? Still, preferable to cigalikes.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 18:31

Is it an EVOD you got Ledare? I'm loving mines now that I seem to have sorted it.

I'm not sure if it's seen as cool, but I think it probably will seem it.

Ledare · 20/03/2014 18:41

I've said that I would prefer DD14 to vape zero nicotine than to smoke. I started smoking because I didn't want to miss out on what my smoking mates were chatting about and to have something to do waiting for the bus Hmm It made sense at the time but got me hooked for 25 years. if someone had come along five years later and said to me that I could have the throat hit and vapour you can get now, I'd have bitten their hands off.

My clearo is an iclear16 B, I think. Haven't tried an evod, but I will now. No leaky tank!

I find it strange that vaping is seen as cool, but then, my generation and generations before us were brought up with the idea that smoking is glamorous and tough. Perhaps that perception has finally shifted, or vaping is harking back to the glory days of screen sirens and their cig holders. You didn't see Marilyn with a roll-up hanging out of her mouth and tobacco on her lips Grin

MaggieMcGill · 20/03/2014 18:42

Glad it arrived ok Schro I didn't have much luck with the CE4's but hopefully one of them works ok for you. Just out of interest did the coil head fit your evod?

Ledare my local shop has been selling the starter packs and liquid for the last month or so, sounds the same kind of shop. He was a bit pissed at me when I told him that £14.99 was not 'very cheap' for the starter kit Grin

Shonajoy · 20/03/2014 18:50

Hi am new here, and have just bought a starter kit from ecig wizard, as recommended on another vaping thread. I normally smoke 15-20 silk cut a day so went for 18mgs and bought about ten different flavours.

Out for a drink tomorrow so plan to start vaping when it arrives, hopefully Monday. I tried one of the early ecig things that came out, but wasn't mad on it, then it broke, but I found I didn't miss cigarettes at all! So I will be asking many daft questions. So glad we have a vaping section here!

Ledare · 20/03/2014 18:52

Ha ha, Maggie - good for you.

I thanked them and stalked briskly out of the shop only to be foiled by the door not opening outwards Blush

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 18:54

It did! And now it's working beautifully! I am convinced the liquid was the problem as I put one in a ce4 and it became manky tasting again.
:( From now on I will just get decent liquid online. The orange one you sent is lovely and DP has snatched the chocolatey one... Very grateful, back to loving it again.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 18:56

Maggie. If only I knew then! My starter kit was £35 for a single battery, clearo and charger... Was told it was cheap!

Ledare · 20/03/2014 19:13

Hello, Shona Smile

Daft questions and newcomers always welcome.

MaggieMcGill · 20/03/2014 19:16

Hi Shona and welcome Smile I'm nearly 6 months in and still get confused with the lingo so don't worry about asking daft question. Did you get a mixture of flavours or just go for tobacco?

Glad you've got it working again Schro and that was great getting a new battery too, you'll notice a difference. Getting caught without your vape stuff is just as bad as running out of fags and all the shops are shut.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 19:22

Maggie I think I got the fear more with the vape stuff than I did with the fags. Running out of fags, the worst that could happen would be me having to wait on a fag, worst that can happen with vape stuff is trying a fag again, really don't want that (and the smell now makes my eyes water and makes me gag a bit so not sure if I a actually would).

Is Hangsen the best pineapple? Can buy a 10ml after midnight and desperate for pineapple as mines is finished.

MaggieMcGill · 20/03/2014 19:30

I don't think I've ever tried pinneapple, I did get piña colada once but wasn't that keen on it. There was too much of a rum taste to it.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 19:38

The pineapple I had was lovely, I eat a lot of pineapple though so didn't need much convincing.

I'm after something very sweet, any recommendations?

Allergictoironing · 20/03/2014 19:40

I've tried a couple of different pineapple & the Hangsen is my favourite to date. Has the added advantage that the vast majority of Hangsen flavours in the UK have just been re-bottled (if they even bother to do that) rather than freshly made, so it doesn't need steeping & can be vaped as soon as you rip your way into the packaging Grin.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 19:47

Where do you order yours from? I think the stuff from the shop I bought definitely needs steeping. He mixed it in front of me, but filled my tank with it and said I could use it straight away? Confused

MaggieMcGill · 20/03/2014 19:54

I'm sure the Hangsen one would be ok.

I'm a bit annoyed because I was just topping up my vamp vape flavour clearo whilst being distracted with DP asking me something. I picked up the wrong bottle and I am now vaping caramel and coconut with a hint of banana nut bread Blush

DumbleDee · 20/03/2014 19:54

Hi all, just found you. I haven't smoked a cigarette in over a year. I've tried lots of oils and batterries, and the best one by far for me in the VIP range (can get online). I honestly cannot believe I've done it. Even had my blood pressure meds reduced at my last check up.

Shonajoy · 20/03/2014 20:08

Thanks for the welcome. I got about 12 different flavours, tobacco, menthol, and mostly fruit flavours after that. I'm actually getting quite excited. Fifty quid for the lot, you think that's expensive and feel like such a hypocrite- I spend more than that in cigarettes a week! X

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 20:21

That sounds like a very interesting combo!

Allergictoironing · 20/03/2014 21:08

Schro I've ordered the Hangsen from a number of places including Vaping Vision, Premier e-cigs and Bargain Vapour, all of which gave me excellent service. The first 2 are UK based & the juice was sent out the same day I ordered & arrived within 2 days max, Bargain Vapour is based in Ireland so took a bit longer to arrive but was silly cheap (14 Euros for 100 ml!).

I would happily recommend any of those to people Smile

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 20/03/2014 21:11

Okay, I discovered £7 in my Paypal from one of the things I recently sold on Ebay finally having funds cleared (bloody paypal and their nearly holding it for a month)! And have ordered from eliquidworld with a %10 off code. Got 10ml of Pineapple and 10ml of Strawberry. Hopefully it comes okay!
