This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

I've found roast beef flanour. Weird.

FlockOfTwats · 17/03/2014 00:03

I have no idea what the purpose of the puff counter is, i've been using them to compare battery life haha. 810 puffs at around 8 watts and its flat.

My itaste vv v3 lasts just shy of 200 at 8 watts :)

Cantabile I love sweet stuff but pregnancy ruins my teeth and sugar really hurts my teeth now, So i love that i can taste lovely sweet foods without the actual food!

Sooty The shop that my bro tried smokey bacon in have roast beef, He declined to try it out after the smokey bacon haha.

magimedi · 17/03/2014 08:04

My local shop had blue cheese - it had to be vaped outside oly - such was the smell!

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/03/2014 11:04

Blue cheese flavour? Envy That sounds horrid, fancy wine though! :o

My clearo tastes burnt again, Evod tastes horrid. I am skint and don't know what to do! :(. I'm crap at this, I can't get anything to work right!

MaggieMcGill · 17/03/2014 11:24

Schro, I have some CE4's that you are welcome to, they are new and I've had them since October but I'll not use them as I prefer other ones now. I also have spare coil heads for the GS-H2 and protank, will any of them fit your evod? I'm happy to stick them in the post for you to tide you over.

Jins · 17/03/2014 12:39

Going back yes I was asking about how to future proof myself with clearomisers etc after the ban. I guess I'm looking at rebuildables which is OK but where do I start? Is there one with an unbreakable tank?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/03/2014 12:41

Aw that is lovely of you, thank you. :) If you send me Paypal details I will at least pay you postage.

I don't know what coils fit the Evod, I only know the ones I have. I don't know what's going wrong with it, I am getting no flavour. Still getting throat hit and vapour but no taste really. And it's a strong flavour I have in it. Confused

WTFlike · 17/03/2014 12:44

Have you tried taking it apart and washing it Schro?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/03/2014 13:01

Yeah, totally scrubbed. Still no taste. :(

WTFlike · 17/03/2014 13:55

Strange that you're getting throat hit though. Have you got a cold?!

MaggieMcGill · 17/03/2014 14:07

Schro pm me your address and I'll post them tomorrow.

QueenStromba · 17/03/2014 14:50

Maybe you've just gotten used to the flavour so aren't tasting it very well any more - I get that if I've been vaping the same flavour for too long.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 17/03/2014 16:39

Schro, try taking a bit of wick out - not too much though or it will flood. Protank heads should fit but I don't think GS-H2 heads will, they're slightly different.

Jins, I got one of these but I haven't quite got to grips with it yet.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/03/2014 19:47

WTF No cold, it's very odd. No matter what flavour I put in, it doesn't seem to taste of anything, but I could taste DP's, but it broke today! Like screwey bit at the top of the battery actually came off Shock £12 doesn't seem such a bargain now!

Queen I've tried changing flavours though. Confused Maybe I need to get a new flavour, the other flavours I have are stronger, they are 24mg and making me heave if I try them.

Plenty I will give that a go, do you mean on the Evod? How would I do that as the wicks on that are tiny wee silicone type things.

Maggie Will PM and thank you. :)

magimedi · 18/03/2014 13:43

Has any one else noticed how often your battery dies about 5 puffs after you have refilled the tank?

(And how often my battery dies, just when I've come upstairs to have a puff & do some Mnetting! (keep batteries downstairs) )

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/03/2014 15:23

Battery hasn't actually technically died on me yet so can't comment.

Since the battery snapped and DP and I have been having to share a wee 550mah, my lovely DGM bought me a pink ego c twist today. Difference is astounding, very grateful for it as I was starting to consider a stinky after having to use skycig... Moment of weakness but I didn't have one.

Jins · 18/03/2014 15:48

Thanks Plenty

I've just invested in a protank so hopefully that can be rebuilt if needs be. Just need a battery thing now

magimedi · 18/03/2014 17:10

Well done for not having one, Schro

Am I right in thinking that it is much better for the battery to run it dry/dead every time before recharging or is this a myth?

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/03/2014 17:30

Thanks, really glad I didn't.
I have never heard that one before! I haven't managed to drain a battery yet, even after using the small 550mah for 2 days, knowing my luck it would cut out when I had no way of charging it!

However, it was in the paper the other day that someone's house set on fire as their vapouriser battery on the charger blew up and started a fire or something! Apparently that's not an isolated incident. Confused

magimedi · 18/03/2014 17:37

I think those are mostly cheap & unbranded batteries.

You can by a fireproof charging bag - seehere but I haven't bothered. I don't leave mine to charge overnight or if I am out.

OP posts:
magimedi · 18/03/2014 17:38

Meant to say - do you only have one battery?

That would have me really worried & panicky!!

OP posts:
PlentyOfPubeGardens · 18/03/2014 19:41

They are no more likely to catch fire than phones, laptops or anything else with a li-ion battery. It happens very very occasionally but only seems to be newsworthy when it's an ecig Hmm I'm not sure about running them dry, I've heard that it's best to, but others say it makes no difference with li-ion.

Schro - This blog shows you how to get into the coil head. You'll need a steady hand and ideally some tweezers. If your flavour wicks disintegrate you can replace with a bit of cotton wool twisted into a strand. Get spares of everything as soon as you can afford to!

Jins - yes you can rebuild a protank. The tank should last as well, as long as you don't drop it!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/03/2014 20:02

Magi After seeing that battery just snap, I can see why they (the unbranded ones) would be more likely to catch fire! Yes, only one battery and until today because of the snapped one, we were sharing one! I was constantly panicking that it would cut out for the first time. The new Ego C one that I was bought it great though, so glad to have it. Still only have one to myself though!

Plenty Thanks for that! Will definitely have to properly learn how to do the whole rebuilding thing properly, the furthest that goes for me at the moment is replacing the coil!

FlockOfTwats · 18/03/2014 20:42

Magi I thought that you had to fully discharge them, But apparently not.

Linky link

It's another type of battery that you should fully discharge i think.

MaggieMcGill · 19/03/2014 17:42

I always thought that too Flock, that's what I've been doing.
