This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

I got bollocked for vaping in morrisons once. I now want to go back and vape next to the veg thing, nicotine free, so i can correctly point out that they are spewing the exact same out into the store and over the food when they tell me its a health risk to other customers.

I wish i'd thought of that then but i was incensed by the smug cow trying to talk to me like a five year old shouting that i couldnt smoke in the store.

FlockOfTwats · 15/03/2014 21:24

I stand next to the VIP counter in the shopping centre vaping sometimes too because the staff can't really come and tell me off there when there are a bunch of people trying out the VIP stuff.

magimedi · 15/03/2014 22:26

Am being v ignorant but WTF is B&M??

Plenty - saw my postie today & he loves the juice you sent me that I passed on to him - he has ordered more!! Thought you'd like to know it hasn't been wasted!

OP posts:
FlockOfTwats · 15/03/2014 23:46

It's a shop magi. They sell the sort of things i buy that i dont actually need, i just buy because its cheap. They also have make up very cheap - that foam foundation stuff by maybeline (The dream matte stuff) for £2.99 in mine!

QueenStromba · 15/03/2014 23:49

I try to just vape in places where you would smoke before the ban with the exception of stealth vaping on the train if it's a long journey. I figure that if we "behave ourselves" then there's less likely to be an out and out ban because people will have less to complain about. I do want to go to a wetherspoons and use my could not look less like an actual cigarette if you tried MVP to see if they'd tell me off though given the reason they gave for banning them is they look like real cigarettes.

QueenStromba · 15/03/2014 23:51

I also stealth vape when we go to our local comedy night even though it's in a pub because the audience is quite closely packed together.

FlockOfTwats · 16/03/2014 00:15

I didn't mind being asked not to vape in morrisons, It was the womans attitude and shouting at me. I complained about her to her manager - Not about being asked not to vape, i was very clear on the fact that if she'd simply stated that morrisons had decided they did not want e cigarettes used on the premesis, I wouldn't have had an issue. Her attitude was apalling though. She ran up to me barking 'you cant smoke in here' and i said 'its not smoking, but ill put it away thats fine' and she carried on barking things at me 'its SMOKING and youre NOT allowed to SMOKE' etc etc

The safety of other customers thing just makes me laugh because they have vapour pouring out of machines in the store lol!

I've been told that a lot of shopping centres dont like people walking around with them because from the back they cant see what you have and it's wasting staffs time to come over and see so they just say no all round.

Our pubs mostly let us vape in them, OH sometimes goes for a pint after work and asks whoever is on if he can and he's not been told no yet. One of them loves that his customers are using e-cigs and said he's definitely seen a rise in customers in the last year as they will sit and vape with a pint.

I know where we are originally from one pub banned them quite a while ago. I'd be surprised if it didn't effect their sales because it was one in town, so it wasn't like it was miles to the next pub - There were 4 others within 100metres that would let you vape (And were cheaper for drinks too! although ones a weatherspoons so wont be allowed to in there now, they let you then though).

QueenStromba · 16/03/2014 02:15

I hope you don't think I was having a go at you Flock? I was just pointing out that us egging each other on to vape in "inappropriate places" probably isn't the best idea. I'm sure most of us can get around the supermarket or manage shortish train journeys etc without vaping and I think us vaping in that sort of place will just give ammo to the people who want vaping treated the same as smoking. I'd much rather not vape in the supermarket now than legally have to go stand outside the pub with the smokers in the future.

FlockOfTwats · 16/03/2014 03:05

Nooo no notat all. I agree with you lol. I don't go out of my way to vape to get peoples backs up ive just never thought about what you said :)

I usually have two or three kids with me so do t normally have a hand free to do much public vaping haha

KatieScarlett2833 · 16/03/2014 08:54

I will never conform and will continue to stealth vape.

Anyone who wishes to challenge me over this in person, will be re-educated at great length until they wish they hadn't bothered and have lost the will to live

MaggieMcGill · 16/03/2014 09:56

A lot of the pubs here are run by Bellhaven and they have just banned vaping. Hmm this includes the one just across the road Angry

Is anyone else planning to quit vaping? I'm trying to use up all my 12mg liquid and then I plan to cut down to 6mg but from previous experience you just don't get the same throat hit with low nic liquid. Can anyone recommend a good 6 or zero liquid? Although I do enjoy vaping I still feel that I have just swapped one habit for another and ideally I'd like to be free from it all. It's going to take me a wee while to get through all this 12mg but I have some lower nic stuff maturing away in my drawer as we speak Grin

magimedi · 16/03/2014 10:43

I cut down to 6 for a bit but had a lot of stressy stuff happening & am back up to 12 as thought it would help.

I will go back to 6 again, but as to giving up vaping entirely I am not sure.

I use The Sherlock from ecigwizard.com - a tobacco flavour.

OP posts:
FlockOfTwats · 16/03/2014 10:54

I'm not planning to give up.

It is another habbit but i don't see a problem with that. Ive come to the conclusion that I'm always going have some sort of addiction or habbit. I have a condition called trichotillomania so i need some sort of habbit to keep me from pulling my hair out anyway, Might as well be one i can afford and enjoy :) Not like the lush addiction when i spent 100 quid a week in there...

QueenStromba · 16/03/2014 12:09

I'm not going to give up - I love vaping!

MaggieMcGill · 16/03/2014 12:31

Queen, I love it too Grin the way it seems to be going tho, i don't know if I can be bothered with the hassle.

Magi did you get a good throat hit with the 6? Last time I tried cutting down I felt like I was vaping fresh air and thought what's the point? I've never really tried tobacco flavour, kinda went straight on to the fruit and sweet flavours.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 16/03/2014 12:39

The prestige vaping NIL nic is quite good. I have sometimes diluted my 12mg with it and have vaped it on it's own. I have blueberry.

magimedi · 16/03/2014 13:31

Maggie the throat hit was fine by me.

I have not yet discovered any flavour, other than tobacco, that I like.

But I don't like sweets at all - about once a month I might have a square of very dark bitter choc. I can't remember the last time I had a mars/kit kat/cake etc!

Give me crisps, nuts, cheese etc & then we are talking. And Wine !!

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 16/03/2014 14:42

Cheese addict here as well, not big on sweets, cake etc either... But I love fruit.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/03/2014 18:18

I'm not planning on stopping vaping. I also have no plans to cut down the nic at the moment - still enjoying 18mg after 5 months. I am heartened by stories of people just naturally gravitating to lower nic though.

Flock, I also have trich! Smile

MaggieMcGill · 16/03/2014 18:59

Yeah, I'm not a big chocolate lover either. DP is a ice cream addict and can do a whole tub in one sitting. He's always trying to get me to eat some but it just hurts my teeth. I'm not sure why I've never got on with tobacco flavours, considering I smoked for nearly 30 years. I probably just never found one that I liked but the ones I did try made my mouth feel dirty so I've just stuck to the fruity and sweet flavours.

MaggieMcGill · 16/03/2014 19:03

Magi I had a look at prestige vaping that Schro mentioned. They have wine flavour. I wonder if it's red or white? Wine

magimedi · 16/03/2014 19:55

Wine flavour?? Wine flavour??

I could be very interested!

OP posts:
FlockOfTwats · 16/03/2014 20:29

Plenty Aha,do you find keeping your hands busy helps? I tend to be worse when i have nothing to do and im restless or anxious and have nothing to keep my hands busy.

Maggie I thought id only like tobacco flvours and was really reluctant to try anything else. I vaped totally wickeds blended Virginia for about a month and didn't like it anymore, so tried cherry and went from there and never liked tobacco flavours since.

magi Ohh a local shop by me (we have three!) does a white wine liquid, ive tried it but didn't think much but i don't drink wine either

My brother tried Smokey bacon in the shop yesterday lol he looked like he was going to throw up!

I was a nice sister and bought him some gummy bear flavoured liquid. I wanted it but they only had 24mg and that's far too much for me and gives me a dodgy tummy but he will have the higher strengths.

Loving my prudence liquid and the tropical one. And the mvp2 is on over 700 puffs and only just gone onto half battery :)

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 16/03/2014 20:51

Yes, mine's worse when I'm on my own, when I'm reading and when I'm on the phone. Unfortunately my job involves lots of time working from home, reading things and talking to people on the phone. It's pretty bad at the moment because my hair has gone oilier since I stopped smoking. I'm going for a crop this week which should help a lot. Vaping does help as it keeps at least one hand occupied.

I find the puff counter really pointless! What I want is a timer so I can set it for 7 mins or whatever and know when to put it down.

It's weird how savoury flavours don't work. I'd love to vape chicken, bacon and crab but have seen too many videos of people trying not to be sick Envy

Cantabile · 16/03/2014 21:36

I had a mulled wine flavour. It wasn't nice, but probably needed more steeping. I might still have it, will have to look in my vaping drawer. It'll definitely have steeped enough by now.

There is another advantage to vaping if you go for the sweet flavours. I used to eat sweets - I needed the sugar for energy as I don't have much and it runs out very quickly - and of course then just got into the habit. Now, I don't eat sweets, haven't bought any this year. Sometimes I make a cake, but again, don't eat as much of it as I did. So I am losing weight. Without trying.

Stop smoking without trying.
Lose weight without trying.

Why the hell do they want to ban this?
