This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Hang on to it! You can get used to 2 1/2 days' battery charge very quickly Smile It does feel a bit odd at first but then so did an ecig after the lightness of a cigarette.

A beauty ring is used with some of the bigger tanks that fit on the inside 510 thread. It gives a smoother look and rounds off the corners so the tank is less likely to catch on something and get knocked off. this picture explains it well.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/03/2014 19:11

Flock, I have a mini protank too, I love the loose draw on it Smile I think I'm going to get a vamo.

magimedi · 14/03/2014 19:51

BUMP

^I luffs you all but you are losing me in the higher realms of vaping. I don't really understand about MPV & innokin & mha.

I currently use these with a couple of slightly larger (1100, I think) batteries & am happy with them.

But I can see that I am going to have to get up to speed if they are going to be outlawed.

If one of you has the time and/or inclination would you consider writing an idiots guide to the higher end of vaping?^

magi, I would find that quite useful as well Smile

I'm going to stash the better battery in a drawer for now.

Oh! And a nice positive. I'm not a runner or swimmer so haven't noticed the difference in my lung capacity after seven weeks but I am amazed at my new-found ability to blow up balloons and clear leakage from my tanks Grin

Ledare · 14/03/2014 19:58

And ty for the beauty ring explanation Thanks

FlockOfTwats · 14/03/2014 20:31

Magi, Not sure exactly what you want to know but i'll give it a go lol.
Just to make sure i don't miss anything i'll assume you are familiar with the basic e cig type kits.

A step up from that would be an [[http://www.vapeescape.co.uk/Vaping-Spares/Batteries--Passthroughs/Joyetech-EGo-C-Twist-VV.html Ego-C twist] or [[http://www.vapeescape.co.uk/Vaping-Spares/Batteries--Passthroughs/Vision-Spinner-1300.html vision spinner]. Quite simple, They have a twisty bit at the bottom (Hence the name twist/spinner) that adjusts the voltage on the battery, and effects taste.

A step up again would be into something like an Itaste VV v3 or an MVP2 - They have variable wattage and voltage and an LCD display. In terms of how you use them, they're very good easy mods - You plug them in, charge and use them. (You can use them while they charge too). The MVP2 particularly is good for its long batery life. I got mine yesterday, it came 3/4 or so charged as usual, and its got to 700 puffs before it died (It has a counter). Variable wattage is just a different adjustment, like variable voltage but its just better and more consistent. It has an ohm detector too to detectthe resistence of the coil - So you wont burn the living fuck out of it.

Then other mods like the vamo v5 The Innokin coolfire 2 or the iTaste 134 run on rechargable batteries that you can take out called 18350s and 18650s (There are others but i only use those two, i dont know that much about them)> The obvious benefit there is that when the battery evetually dies for good, you're replacing the batteries at say 8 quid a piece instead of replacing a whole unit. Things like the itaste 134 are variable wattage only, they have a micro processor inside to automatically detect ohms.

Then there is the whole rebuildable mod things, which i dont know much about, from what i can gather it is basically buying the parts separately and building your own :)

FlockOfTwats · 14/03/2014 20:36

As far as clearomisers etc go - You can use any clearomisers on a mod you dont need a special clearo. If you want to stick a gs h2 or a ce4 on an mvp or a vamo you can.

I have a few different clearos for mine, mostly big ones but that part is just personal preference :) Some people spend over a hundred on one :O The most i've spent is £20 on my aero tank, and £36 today on a nautilus and 5 replacement heads for OH. I normally wont go over £15 on a clearo because to me theyre just too breakable to spend loads on, even though ive never actually broken one lol.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/03/2014 20:38

Great post Flock. The other thing I'd add is that the batteries that go in the Vamo, Itaste 134 etc. are used for other things too, so can't be banned.

Does the 134 have an ohms reader?

FlockOfTwats · 14/03/2014 21:02

No it doesn't have an ohms reader, mainly because it doesn't need one (It has a micro processor inside it, you can hear it when you fire it lol OH thought his was broken when he noticed the sound!), But it is useful to have a device with an ohm reader like the vamo, itaste vv v3 or the mvp2. Just incase we all end up having to make our own coils lol.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 14/03/2014 21:06

Oh I'm completely off the 134 then. I already make my own coils because they're better and cost pennies a time. Vamo it is! Smile

ilovesooty · 14/03/2014 21:07

Great post Flock

I got my MVP2 this week. I love it. I'm beginning to see that a Vamo or 134 might be an idea now - at least they'd beat the ban. It doesn't look that complicated to buy something and put external batteries in it.

FlockOfTwats · 14/03/2014 21:11

Shouty crazy eye happy man does a good run down of mods of pretty much everything i just mentioned and you can have a good look at what they do :)

FlockOfTwats · 14/03/2014 21:15

Plenty If you have the MVP2 for ohm reading having another mod that reads ohms isn't as important, once youd made the coil youd just check the ohms on the MVP2. You don't need to check it on each mod etc (If thats what you were thinking, as i was atfirst lol!).

The 134 adjusts itself depending what watts you set it on, it reads ohms for itself, it just doesnt tell you about it lol.

Jins · 15/03/2014 12:56

I think I've found my sweet spot on the juice so I want to future proof myself as much as possible.

What do we do about clearomiser replacement?

Allergictoironing · 15/03/2014 13:42

OK got a really weird one here for the more technically minded.

Spinner is on charge, but have a standard ego type 900mah & a blingy 650mah battery available. 2 GS-H2 clearos on the go. One clearo works fine with either battery. The other clearo only works with the 650mah battery, seems dead as the proverbial on the 900 mah. But I know the 900mah battery is working fine because the other GS-H2 works OK on it. Tried the same with some CE4s, they all work on both batteries.

So just that one particular combination of that clearo with that battery? Very odd, can't work out what's wrong.

Jux · 15/03/2014 14:58

I have a couple of clearos like that. No idea why though.

FlockOfTwats · 15/03/2014 15:40

No idea why Allergic but i've a couple like that. Also had one refuse to fire on my MVP in the shop just now but worked fine on their 1100 ego.

Jins What do you mean? Now or when the legislation comes in?

magimedi · 15/03/2014 16:51

Flowers Flock for your explanation upthread.

My clearos are fine, but I have one battery (that I bought in France, when desparate) that is bloody tempremental about which clearo it will work with.

OP posts:
PlentyOfPubeGardens · 15/03/2014 18:32

Flock, I'm just futureproofing, so I want a metal tube style mod that also has an ohms reader Smile

Jins, I think it's worth learning to rebuild. You can learn easily on an evod or a GS-H2.

Those with non-firing clearo/battery combos, have you tried ? You can also pull down the centre pin on the atomiser a bit as well, but be careful you don't pull it out altogether.

FlockOfTwats · 15/03/2014 19:20

Yeah the ohms readers are definitely worth having on the mods for that reason.

No problem magi.

Got some new liquid today :) Halcyon hazes "Sweet prudence. The description is "Tangerine zest, acacia honey and French vanilla, mixed with a host of secret ingredients." And it is lovely. And also some liberty flights tropical burst. Very pleased with both!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 15/03/2014 19:23

Allergic My Evod doesn't work on the 1100mah battery for some reason, you just don't get anything from it, works okay on the smaller battery though (but I still hate it).

Haven't been around in a few days as I just can't get through this thread on my mobile, keep getting lost!

Have been stealth vaping in B&M though! :o

FlockOfTwats · 15/03/2014 19:29

I was denied the oportunity to stealth vape in b&m today because i was with my brother, the worst theif in the world, who is banned from there. For standing in the middle of the aisle, in plain daylight, with his girlfriend stealing beer. Not that stealing is acceptable when actually done succesfully, But who the hell does that? Idiot boy!

I really wanted to go in aswell. B&M is my guilty pleasure i can spend hours in there doing sweeat fuck all.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 15/03/2014 19:42

Flock Shock

Do go back in and vape, I was loving that as I spend hours in there as well, makes it even better when you can vape while you go round doing f all! :o

Have now also stealth vaped in Asda too. :o

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 15/03/2014 20:44

I blatantly vaped in the office yesterday. I don't usually as I'm the only vaper (or smoker, come to that). Someone was leaving though and we had a glass of wine so it felt OK. I work in MH and we have a lot of very heavy smokers using our services. Other staff were very interested in what I was doing and its possibilities for the people we work with but are very cautious because of all the BS that's spouted. That's why I think things like Louise Ross's work with Leicester Stop Smoking Services are so important.

QueenStromba · 15/03/2014 21:19

Schro have you tried pulling up the pin on the battery it doesn't work with as per the video that plenty linked to two posts above yours?

I've just done it with my MVP that wasn't working with loads of my tanks. I was a bit worried about breaking it altogether which is why I didn't do it before but it was becoming a major pain in the arse putting a tank on and realising that it was the battery that didn't work with some of the tanks.
