To find James O'Brien LBC presenter a condescending twat
Movingout · 29/05/2013 10:36
Am I the only one that finds LBC radio presenter James O'Brien infuriating. Whilst he has the face for radio he does not have the voice; but worse, I hate the way he patronises callers that are obviously less educated and less articulate than he is. He sounds like a patronising bully and it makes for uncomfortable listening. Unlike Nick Ferarri he has zero charisma.

It's normally James O'Brien for me or radio 4 when he is not on.
I do like Ian Dale though. I just can't listen to Julia Hartley Brewer, I find her obnoxious and turn off or over (I came across a photo of her recently and I was left very confused as to why she thinks that all male callers fancy her?
One thing I like about James OB though, is that he would never make a comment like the one I just made about Julia HB.
I have listened to Lbc for over 30 years and had always thought Clive Bull as the all time best presenter. Now I think that Accolade must go to James OB.
Does anyone remember Brian Hayes in the 80's? I think Nick Ferrari must, in the same way that James OB must remember Allen Partridge.
Probably my first and last post on this forum, so thank you all for the posts I have read advising and putting my mind at rest on my child rearing concerns.

How can anyone possibly think Ferrari is intelligent? Basically all he does is swallow the Daily Mail line wholesale without applying any critical thought or analysis to it. And the way he talks over people who don't agree with him and constantly interrupts them is incredibly bad mannered.
And I strongly agree with whoever said that James Max is an out and out fool.

I listen to LBC, sometimes it's ok, often it is annoying, as much as the presenters can be irritating the ads are much worse
I remember listening to LBC back in the 1980's, there was a phone in with psychic Rachel, you sent in a photo and she told you all your past lives.
(some people used to be dolphins )
Also agony aunt/uncle phone in Phillip someone and Anna Rayburn.
Does anyone else remember them?

The absolute worst is Steve Allen. God alone knows how he is still is a job! All he does is waffle on slagging off Katie Price, Holly Willabooby (his words not mine) and other celebs. OK they do deserve a lambasting, but it has become embarrassing, it is soooo samey and formulaic.
Love Susan Bookbinder, she is a high quality newsreader.
Agree about James O'B, he is up his backside but I have to admire his quick thinking and logical observations.
James Maxx is a complete wind-up merchant, he says things deliberately to get people calling in, but I bet the bosses love his call rate!
Julia HB gives me the willies, full stop.
And finally, Iain Dale, utterly lovely! Such a softie human being, would love to buy him a drink down my local.

I like James - he seems intelligent, especially compared to other LBC presenters. I like Petrie. I also like Jenni Barnet who is on Radio London at the wweekend. But the best LBC presenter ever was Jeremy Beadle-pillock on TV but great on radio.
Paul-who won a LBC sweatshirt in an LBC competition 30 years ago!

jason101 I could have written your post. I have also been a listener since the 80s and love Clive Bull. I used to struggle to stay awake in the small hours to listen to his show in the late 80s. Loved his late night quizzes too, rolling quiz (set a question when you get one right).
Also liked Michael van Straten and Mike Allen especially his word quiz on a Saturday night.
nennypops · 11/07/2013 23:52
I think Paul Ross and Penny Smith on Radio London in the mornings are infinitely better than Nick Ferrari.
And yes, Steve Allen is pretty tedious. I go so sick of endlessly hearing the phrases "'nother one here" and "sick to death of..." that I gave up listening to him completely.

I absolutely love James O'Brien. We should have more men like him. He is so intelligent, witty, thought provoking but not always right. If you want to criticize him, do so but not personal attacks as they merely say more about you. Nick Abbot is another favourite of mine. He is so funny, clever and very well read. I find Ferrari a bit of a numbskull whipping up hysteria with Daily Mail headlines and when challenged with intelligencia, he crumbles. His head is right up Boris Johnson's backside ! JHB is a bore who needs to stop talking about her perfect marriage. James Max was always boring, pompous and overbearing. Glad he's left.

I can't stand James O'Brien. He used to bring his bad mood into the studio with him and take it out on the callers. I remember once that he was speaking to an innocuous elderly lady - about benefits or the cost of health care or something like that - and when she said something like that there was nothing that she could do about what she cost the nation, O'Brien said "You could die". Very coldly and didn't soften the comment with anything else within the call. I felt terrible for the poor old lady, who didn't defend herself against his foul statement. He should have been sacked after that show.
O'Brien has admitted that he sometimes brings his bad mood to the show. He seems less inclined to behave like that recently, but I can't stand his smug attitude. He seems to have to constantly reassure himself that he has worth.
I struggle to stay on LBC during his show and wish he'd drop his irritating sayings like, "If you build it, they will come". Ugh!

"Twat" surely can only be levelled at a female? I level 'it' at this site in general for allowing free, unfettered, disgusting insults to go 'unchallenged'. I haven't subscribed to this site for years after my first foray here in commenting on an issue - whereupon I was grieviously insulted with gross unnecessary expletives by fellow subscribers. I complained to Mumsnet which came back with the pathetic "We allow free expression" or some such weak retort.

LBC commercial radio is ruthless in terminating contracts. While Steve Wot's-iz-Name ('Allen' is it?) has been blithering for so long through the night, and latterly, through the early morning with his absolute drivel one wonders why he hasn't been given the shove.
CaptainTripps · 16/10/2013 10:43
I do like O'Brien. But he can be pretty obnoxious to callers who are concerned about certain areas. I am thinking about medical research (he was incredibly rude to a caller 2 weeks ago to the extent he had to issue an apology at the end of his show) or immigration issues.
He gets that dangerous and low tone when you can almost see him visibly puffing out his chest in righteous indignation. He just doesn't listen or acknowledge. He just shuts them down.
I'm not talking about the racist twats and their twattery. But there is a growing tide of callers who can't make their points without his moral compass getting all discombobulated.
CaptainTripps · 16/10/2013 10:45
Itsy - I hate Emma Barnett too. She has that newish penomenon called 'gravel voice' whereby the voice goes down in a gravelly manner at the end of a sentence. It's very common amongst young folks especially in Amerikee. And it's also very, very annoying. I can't listen comfortably and always need to clear my throat and drink copious amounts of water when I inadvertently tune in to her.
ohmymimi · 16/10/2013 13:41
I've not listened to any of this lot as I like R4 (not making a point, or judging) but I have experience of NF, JHB and JO'B from odd TV appearances - generally find them too Daily Vile for me. My thought on this thread is why do so many of you keep listening if you find such presenters so irritating? I switch off/over the moment Hopkins, Sibary, Brick, McKenzie and their like appear and the frequency of their appearance on certain TV programmes is the reason I no longer watch 'This Morning',for example, and am veering away from 'The Daily Politics' (Toady Young twice within 10 days). Most of this lot are rent-a-gobs and we deserve better from our broadcasters.
