To ask why the MN forums have such little functionality?

So, other forums let you quote other posts, or put text in different fonts/colours etc, or indicate your 'thanks' for a post. Can't be that difficult / expensive, so why are these added functions not available on MN?

OP posts:

Mumsnet is to Netmums as Kathy Burke is to Debbie McGee.

That might be my favourite EVER username.

Why thankyou yoni :)

I like yours too!

pickledginger · 22/04/2013 23:53

I love MN.

Especially for 'we fear change', 'because it's cluttery' and 'because you can't be trusted to use it sensibly'.

BallerinaZeena · 22/04/2013 23:56

Me too pickled. And the 'we like it this way!' completely ignoring the fact it's a profitable business whose owners I'm sure want it to continue that way Wink

mumblecrumble · 23/04/2013 00:19

cos we like it this way

usualsuspect · 23/04/2013 06:45

The OP didn't say anything about wanting tickers or sparkly things.

chrome100 · 23/04/2013 06:50

The only thing I would like is for the op's posts to be in a different colour. Where it's a long thread and everyone piles in waiting for updates or giving their opinions, I always do a search on the page for the op's Anne so that its highlighted in yellow and that way I can just read their posts and not millions of people saying "good luck op, thinking of you" etc

lljkk · 23/04/2013 06:51

OP's posts are in a distinct colour for me, there is an option to do that already on MN. I love that feature, wish we could highlight other posts in one colour for same reason. I find it very primitive when other fora don't allow for that, too.

NoelHeadbands · 23/04/2013 06:52

chrome you can do that now depending on which 'view' you choose. I have the OP's posts coloured green, on most of the long threads that's all I look for

Flobbadobs · 23/04/2013 06:59

Maybe we could have a ticker that indicates how high our judgeypants are today?

We definitely need a 'bashing head against wall' smiley though..

HoneyDragon · 23/04/2013 07:06

Kniddy we've been through the tortoise thing. People do t like it.

BIWI · 23/04/2013 08:03

The thing is, , if there's something you'd like to see done differently, or you have a suggestion for an 'improvement', if you post it in Site Stuff then MNHQ will always consider it unless it's tickers.

IloveJudgeJudy · 23/04/2013 08:47

Another one here who would leave if the site started to have tickers and was all different colours. I do use the function of the OP being in a certain colour as it helps when I scroll through especially long threads. I like the grown up feel of this site. I would leave if the layout changed considerably. I do like the emoticons and the fact that they change at different times of year. Anything other than that would be too much. I would not like to have a "like" button. This is not FB, thank goodness.

TheVermiciousKnid · 23/04/2013 09:15

People don't like tortoise? :( That's very sad. They should give it a try. It tastes very nice. :)

The only thing I don't like is that it can be difficult to track down old threads for advice about specific issues. Hence the regular reappearance in Chat of queries about nits and rants about Parent and Child parking. I have lost count of how many times I've typed "Nitty Gritty Comb is the best £10 you'll ever spend" and "If Parent and Child spaces were at the far end of the carpark, with a safe footpath to the shop obviously, tossers with apparently non functioning legs wouldn't be tempted to use them"!

And if you use Preview every time you'll see if you've cocked it up before it goes out to be laughed at by every MNetter in creation. Especially if you've written Minge instead of Mince in the OP .

YohedYoshoulderYonisandYotoes · 23/04/2013 09:39

oh yeah, that's just what we want, stupid huge text entries in pink and animated idiotic gifs of kittens being ninjas Hmm

VeganCow · 23/04/2013 10:48

About 10 years ago I used to use Femail (the message boards part of DM, I know, I know) .
They changed it from a simple layout like MN and it became so user unfriendly most forum users stopped using it.. In fact they started their own forum, which became very popular.

One of the things I really like about MN is the basic, easy style which focuses on what people are saying rather than how the site looks.

I REALLY hope it never changes.
