To ask why the MN forums have such little functionality?

So, other forums let you quote other posts, or put text in different fonts/colours etc, or indicate your 'thanks' for a post. Can't be that difficult / expensive, so why are these added functions not available on MN?

OP posts:

nenevomito · 22/04/2013 18:53

Because if MN changed we'd all cry. Trufact.

HullMum · 22/04/2013 18:53

also I have shit internet and some times mumsnet is the only site that works for me, probably because it's the way it is

Trillz · 22/04/2013 18:54

Because you can't be trusted to use it sensibly.

AuchAyethenoo · 22/04/2013 18:54

I do kind of get where the op is coming from, when your slightly late to the party and a thread has developed to pages and pages it is very difficult to join in when you want to reply or disagree with a poster 3/4 pages back.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 22/04/2013 18:55

Sometimes on long, fast moving threads, it can be helpful to quote. I do it like this ...

hellohellohihi: So, other forums let you quote other posts, or put text in different fonts/colours etc, or indicate your 'thanks' for a post. Can't be that difficult / expensive, so why are these added functions not available on MN?

Not having an automatic function makes people think about whether it's really necessary though.

Kaekae · 22/04/2013 18:55

I quite like it like this. Tickers etc seem all very dated anyway. Forums themselves are quite dated now aren't they? There always seems to be a private page/group on facebook for something nowadays.

SPsYoniTheOneAndOnly · 22/04/2013 18:58

Because its simple and easy.

I dont want big flashy fucking things under my name. If it changes I'm leaving Grin

SconeInSixtySeconds · 22/04/2013 18:59

But you can read it really quickly like this! It is all clean and minimalist and striking and weeds out those who like tickers and shit

MrsGeologist · 22/04/2013 18:59

It's hardly difficult to copy and paste a post, if you want to quote someone.

AshokanFarewell · 22/04/2013 18:59

I like it how it is, much simpler. You can put someone's name in bold to address them specifically and/or copy their post in italic but that way you just copy the bit of their post that is relevant rather than having lots of very long posts repeated all over the place which is how it is on some other forums. Especially when you get people repeatedly quoting each other and ending up with a long chain of quoted posts!

ouryve · 22/04/2013 19:00

Netmums is that way, if you don't like it.

CoteDAzur · 22/04/2013 19:02

We like it this way and if MN gets big quote boxes to scroll through & glittery tickers, I'm off, too.

OP, you sound like you would like NetHuns and BabyCentre better. Maybe give those a go?

CoteDAzur · 22/04/2013 19:03

You can quote on MN, too.

Look, it's simple:

Cote said "You can quote on MN, too".

That wasn't hard, was it?

TheThickPlottens · 22/04/2013 19:04

forums let you quote other posts
That's what cut and paste does. Then there's italics and bold so really, what else is needed?

I like the simplicity of MN. It loads more easily than the flashy tickery ones. Especially the mobile site.

Lovelygoldboots · 22/04/2013 19:04

I feel like it is throwing your words back in your face. I hate it when it has happened to me on other forums.

StairsInTheNight · 22/04/2013 19:05

i wouldnt mine a large dayglo hairy fanjo under my posts. Or someone doing a wanky wanky gesture.

Trillz · 22/04/2013 19:05

MNHQ can quote, because they can be trusted to use it responsibly.

TheThickPlottens · 22/04/2013 19:05

Cross post with Cote. (See what I did)

StairsInTheNight · 22/04/2013 19:06

or the revolving purple head of Phil Mitchell glaring at you all.

Because other fora are crap for having too much visual clutter. Simple is good; simple loads quickly and is easy to read. MN was custom-written and actually looks smart. All the better for it.

Tell you something I hate is "Join date!" on other fora. Who cares?! Plus info about where they live, their forum status (Newbie! Improver! Longtime Gimmer! etc.) and even what they ate for breakfast. But then I have to hunt hard for the actual date when the posting was made to see if it's actually recent. Argh.

catgirl1976 · 22/04/2013 19:08

Because this is the way it should be.

Sallystyle · 22/04/2013 19:08

I would love a quote feature because I am lazy.

Also an edit button, that allows you to edit a typo up to 1 minute after you post for when you don't catch a typo before you post.

So fora is the plural of forum?
