To ask why the MN forums have such little functionality?

So, other forums let you quote other posts, or put text in different fonts/colours etc, or indicate your 'thanks' for a post. Can't be that difficult / expensive, so why are these added functions not available on MN?

OP posts:

this is ALWAYS a bloke who starts these threads

Quoting is so dull
I get bored of scrolling

Mumsnet allows swearing and politics and doesn't allow pictures, colours or tickers. It's why we like it. Bugger off to the rest of the internet if you like such crap.

poorbuthappy · 22/04/2013 19:15

Because people insist on quoting a 14 page post and add a "LOL" at the bottom.

Its fecking annoying and makes my teeth itch.

matchpoint · 22/04/2013 19:16

Yes to a 'quote' function. An 'edit post' function would be great as well. Would love to see a greater emphasis on spelling, punctuation and grammar as well, I hate reading unintelligible posts. Won't hold my breath though..

Tickers/avatars/banners can go die.

WMittens · 22/04/2013 19:17

Quoting I can live without (although I'd prefer it with) but I think an Edit button should be mandatory by law.

FoundAChopinLizt · 22/04/2013 19:17

'mumsnet talk' has all the right consonants to spell minimalist. Shame about the k, it rather spoils my theory.

Gerrof · 22/04/2013 19:18

I would LOATHE quote functions. It really makes threads tiresome to read.

MN is fine as it is.

You can customise the colours of the OPs post and your own post. But only in a few specific classy colours. No bright pinks or turquoises. Tres Farrow and Ball.

BreconBeBuggered · 22/04/2013 19:18

Wouldn't mind a facility to quote single comments, but I agree that long boxes endlessly quoting back whole conversations are bloody tiresome. I have no idea what a ticker is, so please don't tell me. I'm happy to take it on trust that they're not for me.
An edit facility would be a joy for those of us who are too uptight to even revisit our own posts if we notice a typo after we hit 'post message'.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 22/04/2013 19:20

I think speling, punctuation, and grammer, isn't to bad on this sight? Compered to other's I mean?

Viviennemary · 22/04/2013 19:25

I don't miss the great long quotes that you see on other forums. However an edit button would be handy to correct typing errors and spelling mistakes.

Tee2072 · 22/04/2013 19:25

Because we use our sparkling wit and brilliant comments to fill the boards rather than flashy tickers, insipid quotes and inane quotes ending with 'I agree'.

squoosh · 22/04/2013 19:26

I like the lo-fi element of this forum, it's quite calming to look at. No avatars or signatures or other flickery nonsense. I must say though I would quite like a 'Like' button. Some posts make me chortle so much that they deserve a virtual slap on the back.

I realise this probably makes me the devil.

Gerrof · 22/04/2013 19:26

No, sod the edit function as well. I don't think typos and such matter in the scheme of things, and think edit function could be exploited for stirring bastard purposes.

Anyway where is the OP? Asked and fucked off.

Gerrof · 22/04/2013 19:27

Squoosh = beelzebub

OliviaMumsnet · 22/04/2013 19:28

@Trillz

MNHQ can quote, because they can be trusted to use it responsibly.

Well sometimes we can Grin

@imour

You CAN block folk from PMing you, yes. It's in yer inbox
a handy little red talk to the hand
HTH

squoosh · 22/04/2013 19:29

Gerrof I've 'liked' your post in my mind! Wink

AuchAyethenoo · 22/04/2013 19:30

If you quoted a post it would only show that particular post, not every post involved sighing that conversation, that would be multi-posting.

Earthworms · 22/04/2013 19:33

What hunterwellies said.

But I'm not quoting it

MarshaBrady · 22/04/2013 19:34

It needs to be low fi and calming so my eyes don't hurt from all the clutter.

Nanny0gg · 22/04/2013 19:34

I would like an 'Edit' button. Purely because I sometimes forget stuff that I wanted to say.

(And I wouldn't mind the Topic>AIBU banner at the bottom of the page as well so I don't have to scroll to the top...)

ChippingInLovesSpring · 22/04/2013 19:36

Why would you automatically assume we want them? It's not a matter of difficulty or cost we just don't want that shite - there are plenty of other sites out there if you don't like this one, that we love, is.

Sparklingbrook · 22/04/2013 19:40

An edit button would make reading a thread baffling. You could change your whole post that someone will have replied to.

TheVermiciousKnid · 22/04/2013 19:40
