Was I Unreasonable To Have Complained About This Advert...?

Firstly, I should say that I am very anti-cheating. I was cheated on a couple of years ago, and I am still trying to come to terms with it. I have recently also severed all ties with 2 friends due to cheating. These were very good friends of 20+ years. Friend A was having an affair and friend B was providing her with alibi's etc. That is how strongly I feel about cheating.

Ok, so that was just a bit of background.
Today I saw the TV advert for Flora Buttery and was absolutely horrified. The tagline of it is "Go ahead, cheat on butter."
Am I being unreasonable in thinking that they are encouraging/glorifying cheating?
That they are using the word cheat as if it is something good to do?
I'm not only concerned about cheating in an infidelity sense, but cheating in things such as school tests/sports etc. If children are watching this advert, they may see no harm in cheating.

I emailed Flora company directly to tell them how disgusted I was with the advert, and their lack of morals, and to tell them I would never be buying a Flora product again.

However, when I told my mum what I had done she told me that I had over-reacted and that it was just an advert and I'd behaved like a 'crazy thing'. I left her house and haven't replied to her text.
I'm really upset with her and don't feel that I did over-react.

Um. Listen to your mum.

MoonlightandRoses · 25/02/2013 17:01

Umm, yes, you may have been really a lot a tad unreasonable on that one.

Tee2072 · 25/02/2013 17:01

You overreacted. Listen to your mum.

FairyJen · 25/02/2013 17:01

Your mum sounds very sensible Smile

Petsinmypudenda · 25/02/2013 17:02

Its about butter....you nutter Grin

mmmmmpus · 25/02/2013 17:02

Your mum is a very wise lady

DeepPurple · 25/02/2013 17:02

I think you overreacting a bit. It's a tongue in cheek tag line. About butter. Not exams, sports or people.

MissyMooandherBeaverofSteel · 25/02/2013 17:02

Yes you did over-react.

Big time.

pinkyredrose · 25/02/2013 17:02

You've got too much time on your hands.

Gigondas · 25/02/2013 17:03

Yes your mum has a point.

Seriously get some help as you are either having a bad day or you have over done the cheating point by some margin.

usualsuspect · 25/02/2013 17:03

Err

WildThong · 25/02/2013 17:03

Ha ha ha

CajaDeLaMemoria · 25/02/2013 17:03

I think while you have explained your point well, you over reacted both in your email to Flora and definitely to your Mum. She has a point.

It's 'cheating' in a diet sense. Swap this for that.

It's not saying, go and sleep with someone else. It won't make men or women in relationships suddenly realise that they could be having an affair. It won't make children suddenly learn about cheating. It's a face-value butter advert.

The word does have negative connotations, and obviously very raw ones for you, but that doesn't make the advert immoral.

I'd apologize to your Mum. The advert has clearly touched a nerve, but walking out was really rude.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 25/02/2013 17:03

Erm. Yes. YABU.

Do you get this hysterical about other things or just butter cheating?

CwtchesAndCuddles · 25/02/2013 17:03

I've been cheated on too - I think this is a massive over reaction!!!

Your mum is right!

thezebrawearspurple · 25/02/2013 17:04

You need a hobby, a very time consuming oneGrin

MikeLitoris · 25/02/2013 17:04

Wow.

Total over reaction there imo.

MikeLitoris · 25/02/2013 17:05

Wow.

Total over reaction there imo.

Theicingontop · 25/02/2013 17:05

Overreaction.

And, you dumped your friend of 20+ years for cheating on their partner? I think it's right of you to be a bit disappointed in your friend, angry even, but to cut them out of your life altogether? Cheating is wrong, I have been cheated on, but wow.

HollyBerryBush · 25/02/2013 17:05

How high is your ivory tower, OP?

Looiloo79 · 25/02/2013 17:06

Yes definitely over reacted!

Listen to your mum :)

HecateWhoopass · 25/02/2013 17:07

erm. Sorry, but I think you did.

I also think that they are going to print out your complaint and laugh at it for a very VERY long time.

i also understand that your personal circumstances have caused you pain and it's probably that that you're lashing out at.

But it's butter. It's a silly advert and nobody, nobody is going to think well, if it's ok to have flora instead of butter, I think I'll write the answers to my history test on my arm.

WorraLiberty · 25/02/2013 17:09

FFS please let this be a joke

countrykitten · 25/02/2013 17:09

Er...are you ok OP? I thought this was a bit of a wind up post but it seems that you are serious! I imagine that the folk at Flora are laughing their heads off at your complaint. I certainly would be.

Apologise to your poor Mum who is probably very worried about your strange and OTT behaviour and then go for a run or something. Scary.

SnowyWellies · 25/02/2013 17:09

Um, yes.

It is cheating on you diet... you know, the little things you pop in your mouth (like leftover fishfingers) and tell yourself it does not count.

Did you really overreact like that?
