AIBU?

Was I Unreasonable To Have Complained About This Advert...?

Firstly, I should say that I am very anti-cheating. I was cheated on a couple of years ago, and I am still trying to come to terms with it. I have recently also severed all ties with 2 friends due to cheating. These were very good friends of 20+ years. Friend A was having an affair and friend B was providing her with alibi's etc. That is how strongly I feel about cheating.

Ok, so that was just a bit of background.
Today I saw the TV advert for Flora Buttery and was absolutely horrified. The tagline of it is "Go ahead, cheat on butter."
Am I being unreasonable in thinking that they are encouraging/glorifying cheating?
That they are using the word cheat as if it is something good to do?
I'm not only concerned about cheating in an infidelity sense, but cheating in things such as school tests/sports etc. If children are watching this advert, they may see no harm in cheating.

I emailed Flora company directly to tell them how disgusted I was with the advert, and their lack of morals, and to tell them I would never be buying a Flora product again.

However, when I told my mum what I had done she told me that I had over-reacted and that it was just an advert and I'd behaved like a 'crazy thing'. I left her house and haven't replied to her text.
I'm really upset with her and don't feel that I did over-react.

Imagine sitting down to your toast in the morning and finding a vagina/penis shaped imprint in your butter. Now that would be something to complain about.

Thank you everyone for your replies - even if they weren't what I was wanting to hear.
I now have 6 friends on FB who have said they will complain, so perhaps broken Britain isn't completely broken after all.

I don't doubt it, mate.

Although that does remind me of that bit in I'm Alan Partridge where he is trying to prove to the farmer how popular he is. "How many cow do you have?" "Errrr...a hundred?" "Well, I've got a hundred and TWO friends."

This reminds me of when my sister emailed Orange to complain about their advert where lots of orange paint splashes everywhere. She is a DT teacher and had a real shortage of materials at her school so couldn't bear to see the waste Grin (she is usually really normal she just had a mad evening). Orange were really nice about it and said it wasn't real paint so she shouldn't worry but to thank her for giving them a good laugh.

How long is reasonable to wait for a response from Flora?

I've also emailed Ofcom and the Advertising Standards Authority.

Ok can we all stop on the OP.

It is quite worrying and a shame that she is a bit unhinged atm.

OP please speak to your mum, you don't sound quite right at the moment and there is probably a good reason for this. You sound like you have been through quite an ordeal and it sounds like your mum is a bit worried too.
Hope you are still around and are in contact with your mum.
