AIBU?

Was I Unreasonable To Have Complained About This Advert...?

Firstly, I should say that I am very anti-cheating. I was cheated on a couple of years ago, and I am still trying to come to terms with it. I have recently also severed all ties with 2 friends due to cheating. These were very good friends of 20+ years. Friend A was having an affair and friend B was providing her with alibi's etc. That is how strongly I feel about cheating.

Ok, so that was just a bit of background.
Today I saw the TV advert for Flora Buttery and was absolutely horrified. The tagline of it is "Go ahead, cheat on butter."
Am I being unreasonable in thinking that they are encouraging/glorifying cheating?
That they are using the word cheat as if it is something good to do?
I'm not only concerned about cheating in an infidelity sense, but cheating in things such as school tests/sports etc. If children are watching this advert, they may see no harm in cheating.

I emailed Flora company directly to tell them how disgusted I was with the advert, and their lack of morals, and to tell them I would never be buying a Flora product again.

However, when I told my mum what I had done she told me that I had over-reacted and that it was just an advert and I'd behaved like a 'crazy thing'. I left her house and haven't replied to her text.
I'm really upset with her and don't feel that I did over-react.

I'd love to know what the OP thinks about the new Flora buttery ad Grin

I am cringing with embarrassment on your behalf. Bet you've given Flora Something to laugh about though.

Why does your title have capitals for every word? I feel very strongly about this. I have recently severed all ties wit 5 friends because they did not write in the correct manner.

I thought the cake thread was hilarious, not really getting this one though.

Yes do cull your fb friends - you'd be doing them a massive favour by getting yourself off their list.

I just want to know if the FB friend who deleted you over this is named 'Marge'

Really? You need to chill out and get a life. How utterly and totally ridiculous of you.

Calm down dear, it's only a commercial!

6 of them have said that they would.
The rest didn't seem too bothered.
Think I may be needing a cull of FB friends if that's their attitude to cheating. Sad

Have your 103 Facebook friends complained to Flora too?

Try to think of 'cheating' as 'taking the upgrade for a trial run'.

I used butter and marg in a recipe tonight.

I guess that makes me worse than a cheater Shock

Butter late than never - can anyone explain how does one cheat at Connect 4 Confused?

OP, what is your position on sports cheats? Have you written to cricket federation about game rigging? How about the Olympics - any chance of finding a different vent for your strong feelings there? What about Silvio Berlusconi? Boris Johnson? Dominique Strauss Khan? Chris Huhne? They all cheated their way to the front page. I assume you are writing to them that they are setting a bad example?

Can you also make a note never to watch Homeland, the Killing, Madmen, SATC, Desperate Housewives, indeed just switch the tv off and don't read books either. Cheaters are EVERYWHERE. Perhaps because the mix of love, lust, guilt and secrecy sells well. If only this could be channelled through advertising. Oh hang on...

"Like that horrible TV show 'Cheaters' - people caught cheating on camera purely for entertainment purposes."

I LOVE that programme!

Worra - I don't think anyone would recognise me from my 'usual' NN. And I've had a couple of usual 'NN'. I'm more of a lurker really, and don't tend to start threads.
And, just to clarify - I didn't namechange solely to start this thread.
I was namechanging anyway - for similar reasons, no doubt, that other people namechange!
It just so happened that I namechanged and then started a thread where people have accused me of being on the wind-up. Which I'm not.

Shakey - you're admitting that you've cheated?? GET OFF MY THREAD!!! Wink
