Particularly after reading the 'fitting in' thread in AIBU... I just don't really understand, it's just blood, and you still have to deal with it when you use other sanitary products.

If anything, I think it's less yucky, because it collects it and you aren't wiping it off yourself? If it's about things going up there, that doesn't really make sense if you use tampons...

I've just ordered one - should arrive tomorrow. Sods law though that period started this morning.

I've had enough of tampons and am hoping that the potential diminished craping might apply to me too. Fingers crossed.

Sorry, the thought of the disgusting noises they make when changing them in public loos, ,washing them out, NO THANKS. the only way to deal with periods is tampons. Period!

It's the thought of having to get the blood on your hands when emptying/cleaning it that puts me off, I've seen a few posters say they can only use toilet cubicles with a self contained sink in them when they are using one as they tend to get blood on themselves. I use sanitary towels and can roll one up and bag and bin it without touching the blood.

Yep they're great because it's all so much cleaner.
And it's only blood going back into the water course, not a lump of cotton wool.

With practise though you don't tend to get bloody fingers. Only really the first use of the period iygwim where the blood has exited already.

And you can leave them in for so much longer than tampons I don't need to change in public loos only at home.

They're no more disgusting than a sanitary towel. But having said that it gave me the most massive cramps and I'm gutted I wasted £20 on it.

No you can't feel them at all if they are positioned correctly.

Can't feel it inside unless you have got it in wrong in my experience.

I haven't had any need to change it in public, only at work which has a sink in the toilet. People do just wipe them out with loo roll, or if you are resourceful, a baby wipe etc from your handbag.

I found tampons really uncomfortable and could only get them in if they had the applicator. Oh and Pooka, I have had less cramping, although I have no idea hbow that works!

I do think they are minging. Using something for the length of your period and not sterilising it/using a new one is minging and I'm surprised they don't go round giving people toxic shock syndrome. Also getting blood all over the toilet and your clothes is not nice esp for the person using it after you. I can't help but get even more grossed out at toilet door handles now I know about mooncups and I use tissue to open the doors anyway.

Apparently porn stars use natural sponge, it socks it all up where you could even have sex thats being filmed and it not be noticed. And you can clean it/sterilise it and not just use the same piece over and over again.

What surprise me when I started using the mooncup is that the blood doesn't smell at all, it only smells when absorbed by a towel or tampon.

Because I don't want to be fishing around in my bleeding fanny in a public toilet, shitting myself in mortification because the woman in the next cubicle is only INCHES away and can hear every squelch.

Tampons for me everytime. (Or would be if my periods would ever return after coming off the injection!)

I think/thought they're great. I only wish I'd found out about them sooner. I only got to use mine for about 18mths then peri menopause thingy kicked in and they stopped totally. All those years struggling with alternatives when I couldv'e been using one and I only find a solution to all that at the end

They are brilliant. Cramps so much better, less!!! mess, clean, feel much more in control of my period.

I have one and I love it.

But I can easily understand how people don't like

• to see and wash away sanitary blood - it is much more confronting than a pad or tampon.
• to reach inside their vagina to insert/remove the cup - friends with "issues" prefer pads because they don't like touching the inside of their vagina (don't ask how that came up in conversation!).
• some people just prefer to do what they are currently doing, and don't see the need to experiment or change...

For me, these are not an issue, but for others I can see how they are an issue.

brandy toxic shock is NOT associated with moon cups - they are made of silicone. It's the fibres from tampons that are dangerous.

Tampons are not sterile, willies are not sterile - why would you need to sterilise a moon cup before the end of your period?

Blood over clothes and toilet? ime they are less messy than tampons and certainly don't get blood on my fingers.

People use sponges in the same way a moon cup is used - rinse and re insert.

Orange - My periods have always been blood baths. To the point of soaking through pants and jeans in an alarmingly short space of time. This is partly why I went on the jab.
Jenny - I have no qualms about feeling into my own vagina but bloody hands in public toilets is just not fair on other toilets users. No matter how much wiping with loo roll goes on.

Well mine's never made an audible sound! And anyway they last much longer than tampons/pads so most people have no need to change them in public if you're worried about that.

The sound of ripping off the back of a sanitary towel is much louder than any "squelch" (which, really, you're deluding yourself if you think anyone else will even notice or be able to hear) and nobody gets embarrassed about that once they're older than 15 or so? Why should it be different?

I love mine! Wouldn't be without it! Took a few go's got get right, but now I can happily pop it in and out. If I'm on a heavy day, I just take a bottle of water in with me when using public loos.

My own menstrual blood doesn't bother me one bit, why would it? I know what it is ffs.

Also, I don't tend to stare at other loos users hands so doubt I'd much notice if they had a bit of blood on them, and really I doubt I'd be much bothered!

I don't understand how you take it out without blood going everywhere! How do you do that?
A tampon is pulled out and dropped straight in the loo.

You give it a light squeeze, pop it out, and empty it. Really nothing to it, job done, blood gone! I haven't managed to look liked I've gutted a badger thus far.
