To not really understand why some people find mooncups so disgusting...

Particularly after reading the 'fitting in' thread in AIBU... I just don't really understand, it's just blood, and you still have to deal with it when you use other sanitary products.

If anything, I think it's less yucky, because it collects it and you aren't wiping it off yourself? If it's about things going up there, that doesn't really make sense if you use tampons...

Empty it down the toilet
Wipe with loo roll
If at home, wash in sink
Wash hands

About as mucky as a non applicator tampon

Jossysgiants · 29/11/2012 20:50

I was a bit squeamish but I have used one for a year, and I love it. ( as far as you can love anything related to menstruation) Feels cleaner, more convenient and cheaper. Couple of scares though where it seemed to get completely lost overnight.

GhostShip · 29/11/2012 20:51

I couldn't wipe something with loo roll if it was going inside of me. Fair enough, wiping the fanjo dry is ok. But wiping something that needs to go inside me... No channy.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 29/11/2012 20:54

The wiping it with loo roll is puzzling me too. Doesn't it get tiny bits of loo roll all over it?

I'm suspecting this was the wrong thread for asking mooncup advice on!

Viviennemary · 29/11/2012 20:55

I'd never heard of them either till I read about them on here. I thought they must be a new thing and was informed they'd been around since the 1930's. Blush Glad I'm not the only one who had never heard of them. They sound awful.

EuroShagmore · 29/11/2012 20:59

Gosh this has all got a bit fraught, hasn't it?

I have quite heavy periods and don't need to change mine more than every 4 hours on the heaviest days and it stays there all day on lighter days.

I empty mine down the loo and rinse it out in the sink. I don't see what is so awful about that. People spit down the sink when brushing their teeth, wash wee and poo particles into in when washing their hands and occasionally vomit into it. I don't see that adding a little residue of menstrual blood is any worse than any of those. It's just a period, not the liquid embodiment of the antichrist!

TraineeBabyCatcher · 29/11/2012 21:05

mignonette

To quote a post-

"I haven't had any need to change it in public, only at work which has a sink in the toilet. People do just wipe them out with loo roll, or if you are resourceful, a baby wipe etc from your handbag"

Her reference to the sink is in response to the comment about exiting the loo with blood on hands. She is saying that she can wash them inside the toilet room so no one would see anything, not washing the blood down the sink, I believe.

ElectricMonk · 29/11/2012 21:16

Mignonette - not disagreeing with you that it is direly disgusting behaviour but, from a medical perspective, what would be the issue with washing a menstrual cup (as opposed to pouring gobs of menses) in a shared sink? Surely nobody actually touches the inside of a lavatory sink because we all know that they are very unhygienic when subject to normal use, or (god forbid) puts the plug in and fills it with water to wash any more? (Genuine question, I'm not looking for an argument! Smile)

RandallPinkFloyd · 29/11/2012 21:16

I don't think they're disgusting at all.

They're just not for me.

I also don't like non-applicator tampons or towels. Not because I'm squeamish or think MB is disgusting, I just find applicator tampons the easiest solution.

I suppose for me the only analogy I can think of is that I don't find poo or wee disgusting either but I personally wouldn't choose to handle it IYSWIM. (That's not meant sarcastically btw, just the only way I can think of to phrase it)

But lets be honest it's not fun whatever you use. It's just a necessity and you use whatever works for you.

I can't imagine all tampon users cringe a the mere suggestion of blood but I also don't imagine all Mooncup users rub their hands together in glee every 4 weeks!

I think it's great that there's so much more choice now and tbh I don't see why anyone would care what anyone else uses.

Of all the random things to be judgey about this is quite possibly the bizarrest!

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 29/11/2012 21:19

The people getting freaked out by mooncups on this thread sound like the girls at school that used to go "eewww, isn't sticking a tampon up there disgusting "

When we were about 11 and weren't as knowledgeable about these things.

Also, for the record, a clean tampon isn't sterile. Neither is a vagina.

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 29/11/2012 21:20

If it's not your thing, then fine, but don't get all hysterical about it. I couldn't use one, I have a slight prolapse and can't even use tampons.

FivesAndNorks · 29/11/2012 21:23

no Fanjo they don't, the plastic means the tissue doesn't stick

Yes, tiny amounts of blood go down the sink when you wash your hands. Same as a non applicator tampon I imagine - or worse in my case since I don't put the mooncup very far up

MmeLindor · 29/11/2012 21:24

Random
I don't get all excited about my period, but I must say that I often forget I have my period.

My biggest problem is remembering to empty it.

FivesAndNorks · 29/11/2012 21:25

for all tose asking about how come it doesn't slop all over when you take it out, I wondered the same, but it really doesn't. The plastic is quite rigid and the whole thing can stand up on its stem. Obv you have to be careful, but it's not a teetering mess waiting to happen

lurcherlover · 29/11/2012 21:25

For me, my mooncup has changed my life, in a small way. I can basically forget about my period in a way I couldn't with tampons. I empty it in the morning and at bedtime, and that's it. No cramps, no leaks, no worrying about TSS. No stressing if my period's early and I haven't bought tampons. No worrying about what to do if in someone else's house and there's no bin in the bathroom. One of the best things I've ever bought!

FivesAndNorks · 29/11/2012 21:25

And I probably have the "what to do in work toilet" thing on two occasions a month. On the other days it stays in morning to night

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 29/11/2012 21:29

I agree that a bit of blood may go down the sink, but traces of poo and wee do too. That's why we need to wash our hands!

BobblyGussets · 29/11/2012 21:43

Tampons have been found to have cockroach parts and eggs in as well as other things Grin.

Menstrual blood is no "dirtier" than any other blood.

Please never, ever flush tampons or towels down the lavatory. That is 99% grosser than a mooncup.

AboutThyme · 29/11/2012 21:45

I have been interested in trying one since hearing about them on here but it's the whole..well..getting it in and out part that concerns me Hmm

nemno · 29/11/2012 21:57

One of these threads prompted me to buy one (never heard of it before). I ordered it in plenty of time for my period but it never arrived. Company were fab and immediately sent me another but too late for this cycle. They assured me they had sent it first class. If someone nicked the package imagine what they thought when they opened it Grin

But the person who thinks tampons being flushed is acceptable, please please reconsider.

Glitterknickaz · 29/11/2012 22:03

They're much cleaner than non applicator tampons. Once you've had practise, apart from that first insertion, you only touch the outside so your finger don't get dirty.

The total lack of smell that you get with other sanpro is good too.

I used to be incredibly heavy until I went on the mini pill and now the implant, heavy enough to soak through a super tampon and towel in an hour or so, but the mooncup at worst only needed emptying 3 hourly. Now it's twice a day if that.

I literally forget sometimes that I am having a period because of it.

Glitterknickaz · 29/11/2012 22:04

and I've saved £££ on sanpro in last 3 years' use

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/11/2012 22:18

I think they are great, no smell, no leaks my periods are shorter by about 2 days and best of all no cramps. And I've never emptied it in a sink

prudencesmom · 29/11/2012 23:43

I have nightmare periods so I would actually need a moonbucket Confused
Men are so lucky they dont have all this to worry about Grin

BertieBotts · 29/11/2012 23:48

You should try it Pru :) They hold a lot more than tampons, pads etc and you can always double up with pads as well if you want - if anything it might mean you need to change less frequently?
