To not really understand why some people find mooncups so disgusting...

Particularly after reading the 'fitting in' thread in AIBU... I just don't really understand, it's just blood, and you still have to deal with it when you use other sanitary products.

If anything, I think it's less yucky, because it collects it and you aren't wiping it off yourself? If it's about things going up there, that doesn't really make sense if you use tampons...

I wouldn't use a sink. In Moët scenarios I've read about, the benefit of sink in cubicle is explained as being for hand washing rather than rinsing.

TheDuchessOfEarl · 29/11/2012 19:45

No one's tipping it down the sink!

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 29/11/2012 19:45

I know nothing of the mooncup.

How often do you take it out? Do you sleep with it in? Can you feel it?

Not that I would ever use one mind. Just nosy Wink

RichardSimmonsTankTop · 29/11/2012 19:45

I don't pour mine down my sink! I've already said that.

If I ever have to empty mine in a public loo (rarely, like Fenouille I don't empty mine during the day) I just tip the contents into the toilet and reinsert, then wipe hands with a wetwipe or a tissue. Then wash hands in the sink.

I really don't get this hysteria!

MrsBW · 29/11/2012 19:46

It's the 'pinch to pull it out' thing that get's me... There's no way I'd be able to get a thumb and forefinger up there to pinch something together to release it.... Or have I got the 'how you get it out' bit wrong??

Pooka · 29/11/2012 19:46

Incidentally, I find changing tampons can be q bit of a gore-rest for me - heavy periods.

And I'll say it again - flushing them is minging.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 29/11/2012 19:47

How long did you try it for Ghostship? I honestly can't see how it can not be messy.

I really want to try, but I don't have £20 to waste if I don't like it.

GhostShip · 29/11/2012 19:47

You empty it and re-insert it, in a public loo? Oh dear. That's actually vile. Least when changing a tampon you don't actually even have to handle the part that's going inside you, it's sterile.

mignonette · 29/11/2012 19:48

I'm, not hysterical. Just that as a HP I have to deal with poor knowledge of cross contamination amongst both HCP's and the general public and emptying them in sinks has been mentioned on MN

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 29/11/2012 19:48

And how can you not empty it during the day? How big are these things?!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 29/11/2012 19:49

I was until very recently a "that's DISGUSTING" person when it came to mooncups, then I thought that all those happy people can't be wrong. Just had my first mooncup period and it was much easier than tampons.

Honestly, you can remove, empty and replace without getting blood everywhere, just as you can remove a tampon.

I particularly hated the way the tampon string would get wet, really smelly and uncomfortable.

I honestly would recommend you just try it. Think of all those tampons going to landfill or ending up in the sea...

mignonette · 29/11/2012 19:49

To quote a post-

"I haven't had any need to change it in public, only at work which has a sink in the toilet. People do just wipe them out with loo roll, or if you are resourceful, a baby wipe etc from your handbag"

GhostShip · 29/11/2012 19:49

Only one period outraged it just wasn't for me. I have irregular and heavy periods and found them more trouble than they're worth. I can understand that some people may like them, but its not for me.

RichardSimmonsTankTop · 29/11/2012 19:49

Ghostship - why is it vile? My hands are clean.

InNeedOfBrandy · 29/11/2012 19:50

Not everyone who uses tampons flush them. A bit silly to assume so.

bagpuss · 29/11/2012 19:51

I've tried it, hated it, not going back now. I don't have a problem with dealing with my own blood etc, I just found the whole thing very uncomfortable and oozy Sad.

Each to their own and all that...

InNeedOfBrandy · 29/11/2012 19:51

The fact you've gone in a public toilet, opened the first door, then the cubicle door means your hands are not clean. With a tampon you don't even touch the tampon going up with a applicator.

GhostShip · 29/11/2012 19:52

Richard - no they're not! You've just touched the filthy toilet door, maybe wiped your bits after having a wee or poo. Then you're going to remove your moon cup with those hands and re-insert it?

spatchcock · 29/11/2012 19:54

Mignon Just as people are all different, so too are mooncup users. I used to work with a woman who left her used tampons behind the toilet, you don't hear me bleating on about how tampons are disgusting.

HairyGrotter · 29/11/2012 19:55

Really is individual choice, no one should be judged on it. I'm not minging or weird because I use a mooncup, I take every care to ensure the loo I use is fit for purpose after my visit, period or no period.

I don't pour the contents down a sink either, always the loo.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 29/11/2012 19:56

It's the heavy period days that's putting me off trying, so I can see why if you're very heavy it just wouldn't work.

I'm thinking about getting one to use just to save on tampons for days I'm around home towards the end of my period when I'm not as heavy.

OrangeLily · 29/11/2012 19:56

You know when it's empty because you empty it regularly.

I also find that I can feel myself filling it now, I'm much more aware than when I was using tampons and pads. You kind of get used to what it feels like.

TrustMeImANinja · 29/11/2012 19:57

"You dont generally need to change them during the day"
Eh?
I change mine as often as I did a tampon. Hourly on my heavy day (and Id still over flow the cup) and I dont have heavy periods.

For the poster who said it gave them cramps, you might want to keep trying because it did the same for me for the first 3 months then it stopped.

I totally get why people dont like the moon cup, you get blood on your hands, changing it in public is fiddlier, and if you're squeamish its not the best thing to face.

But for me it was the best of a bad bunch. Pads are awful, and tampons have always been uncomfortable for me.

Dealing with the sight, mess and over flowing of a moon cup is worth it just to be physical comfortable when using it.

mignonette · 29/11/2012 19:57

I never said they were disgusting Spatch. Do not put words into my mouth. I said it is unhygienic to pour body fluids down a public sink. What reasonable person could possibly think otherwise?

Pour it down the toilet.

spatchcock · 29/11/2012 19:58

"You dont generally need to change them during the day"

I didn't need to either. I had quite heavy periods before I started using one but since I started using a mc they've been lighter.
