I love chips, corned beef, fried egg and beans. It's my once a month cheer me up meal.

EnjoyGOLDResponsibly · 08/09/2012 15:26

I like it in a crusty roll with horseradish Smile

RuleBritannia · 08/09/2012 15:27

In my day During the War There was a time when meat was very scarce and sometimes corned beef was all we had. It was the only meat that service personnel had and they called it 'bully beef' from the French boeuf bouille meaning corned beef. So some of us could not have a larder without a couple of standby tins.

NettOlympicSuperstar · 08/09/2012 15:27

I made stovies with it this week, and loved it.

brighthair · 08/09/2012 15:29

There is the fried corned beef hash and then there is the stew type one which I love. Corned beef, potatoes, onions, carrots and oxo (no posh stock here!) with red cabbage and crusty bread to dunk

LulaTheOneAndOnlyMrsPistorius · 08/09/2012 15:30

YA deffo NBU at all. I LOVE corned beef

chickydoo · 08/09/2012 15:30

Do you know or care what bits of the cow it comes from???
If I tell you, you might feel a bit sick

GlaikitFizzog · 08/09/2012 15:34

I think there are many Differnt hashes! Just like every family has a stovie recipe!

My cbh is mashed potato with corned beef mashed in, topped with cheese, then under the grill till crispy.

My dads stovies is corned beef, potatoes and onions all cooked together a bit like a stew, with stock.

Bother equally delicious!! Yanbu!

Spam on the other hand Envy

"As an aside, AIBU to introduce it to my child? If not, at what age is it acceptable?"

Seriously, it is corned beef, not crack cocaine! As a northerner I grew up on corned beef hash, and it would be absolutely fine to feed to a child!

TinyDancingHoofer · 08/09/2012 15:36

Ugh SPAM. Agree with you there Glaikit

The beefy bits chickydoo! I'm not a meat snob, I'll eat the scrapings. Too much food is wasted nowadays because it's not a "prime cut"

TinyDancingHoofer · 08/09/2012 15:38

My dad used to do the mash and cheese on corned beef thing and then we'd cover it in ketchup. YUM

I'm planning on cooking half a pig's head for Christmas dinner, and have cooked tripe and ox heart, so I don't care what part of the cow it's from.
I'm really keen to get into the nose to tail eating thing.

Blatherskite · 08/09/2012 15:42

I'd rather have Spam than corned beef tbh. My Grandma used to look after us when we were poorly and lunch was always spam with butter on wholemeal Warburtons bread. I loved my Grandma and miss her lots and the sandwiches always remind me of her.

If you're doing beef, it need to be Potted Beef sarnies

EnjoyGOLDResponsibly · 08/09/2012 15:43

Blimey, knock yourself out Nett Grin

mejon · 08/09/2012 15:44

YANBU. Those of you saying 'yuk' - are you thinking of Spam or something similar? I can see nothing yukky in corned beef - it's just salted to preserve it isn't it? Yummy in a sandwich with brown sauce.

mejon · 08/09/2012 15:46

Ditto spam sandwich with brown sauce too Grin

squeakytoy · 08/09/2012 15:47

Waitrose are great for doing "forgotten cuts" of meat. Pig cheeks are really inexpensive, and are absolutely lovely in a casserole.

Mrsjay · 08/09/2012 15:48

OH we were talking corned beef last night as you do Grin dh said we havn't had it for ages I can't remember ever having it for dinner I like it now and again on a sandwhich with brown sauce dont knock it till you have tried it , DH wants corned beef hash Id rather eat a poo sandwhich that that so I guess next week I will make him hash while i have my sandwich

Mrsjay · 08/09/2012 15:49

Yummy in a sandwich with brown sauce.

It is soo good

CrikeyOHare · 08/09/2012 15:49

Love corned beef. My favourite "skint" meal is corned beef fried up with some onions, add a tin of beans and serve with loads of bread.

Proper CB dinner - layer of corned beef, layer of fried onions, layer of mashed potato, corned beef, fried onions, mashed potato, loads of grated cheddar on the top, in the over for 30 mins. Serve with masses of Bisto & a pile of sweetcorn. Heaven. On. A. Plate.

Hate the stupid tins, though - can't operate that key thing for the life of me Blush.

GlaikitFizzog · 08/09/2012 15:50

Oh they do ring pull cans now! No more finger amputations in the quest for a hash!

Mrsjay · 08/09/2012 15:51

I saw corned beef on man V food I was a bit Hmm as it isn't the corn beef we eat looked much different

Mrsjay · 08/09/2012 15:52

god those key cans were lethal wern't they I can remember a few cut fingers when i used to open the can for my nana as she said her hands were funny , really Nana you just didn't want to be cut to ribbons did you Grin

sugarice · 08/09/2012 15:52

MrsJay It's a ring pull now on the tins isn't it?. I always ended up using a tin opener to get into the wind up key tins as I'd only get half way round before running out of room Grin
