To think that piercing a toddler's ears isn't right?

An acquaintance of mine has updated on FB about having her 17mo dd's ears pierced this afternoon and has uploaded photos of how 'lovely' she looks.

I can't believe this is even legal! Is it? I'm quite shocked actually, I've never given it that much thought but surely the child should have some kind of choice? What about infection? I remember getting mine done and it hurt quite a bit actually, and I found it quite hard to sleep etc.

I hope they at least gave the little one some kind of numbing cream. Sad

not something I would do personally as u don't think it looks nice.

You are about to get flamed by many btw, this is a touchy subject on here.

peanutMD · 21/08/2012 19:18

I don't not u lol

TheMonster · 21/08/2012 19:19

I don't like it either. Yanbu.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:20

Flame away.

It's vile but plenty of people on here go for it so don't expect total agreement.

Feminine · 21/08/2012 19:20

op you probably don't realize, but its only been about 3 wks since the last earring debate.

MOST here don't like it.

I don't mind :)

picnicbasketcase · 21/08/2012 19:20

YANBU but prepare for a ton of folk telling you the subject's been done before.

Tartymuffin · 21/08/2012 19:20

I personally don't like it and wouldn't do it - but in many cultures it is the norm, and is even expected, so I figure I'll choose not to do that to my DD and let others make their own choices.

And no, it's not illegal - it just requires the parental consent - the same as ANY child under 16....

calypso2008 · 21/08/2012 19:20

Here in Spain it is automatic for a baby girl to have her ears pierced - I hate it and didn't do it. Everyone consequently thought my DD was a boy for the first year of her life. Not one baby girl does not have her ears pierced. I find it wierd.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:21

Well, I suppose most subjects have been done before, feel free not to comment if it irritates you Smile

I have a 15month old, she will NOT be having her ears pieced until she asks.... (fingers crossed she'll be at least 10, I may think about other then) ... I really don't like babies ears being pieced but each to their own I suppose :)

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 21/08/2012 19:22

just because its common practice in some places does not make it okay! its normal-ish where I come from (maybe 25% of baby girls get it) but that doesn't in any way make it okay!

there should be a lower age limit definitely

Unhappy73 · 21/08/2012 19:23

I agree, repulsive and worrying. Why would you inflict even momentary pain or fear on your small child for your own gratification?! Kids that small don't care about earrings! And it looks awful.

peanutMD · 21/08/2012 19:23

Slatternly people are just giving you a heads up, why the attitude?

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:24

Oh really, calypso? Didn't know that.

I just thought there should be a choice, and I genuinely thought there would be something that said 'no under 5's'. It's never really come up in our house as I've got a DS.

OP posts:
slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:25

peanut I didn't mean to convey 'attitude', hence the smiley face Smile

peanutMD · 21/08/2012 19:28

Oh okay I guess it just came across wrong, sorry.

I'm surprised you haven't been lynched yet... Or had a "ffs done to the death". I started an earring related thread a few days ago and it turned into a near riot :o

NovackNGood · 21/08/2012 19:29

They do it at birth in Spain and until they ban chopping bits off and mutilating little boys, I think banning ear piercing can wait. Don`t you?

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:29

lacking that's what I meant to say, a lower age limit. But you said it far better than I did!

mchappypants greggs sausage roll, fruit shoot. There's 2 to get you ahead Wink

OP posts:
LackingNameChangeInspiration · 21/08/2012 19:30

novack that's odd logic? why not strive for both now?

Methe · 21/08/2012 19:30

YANBU. It's abuse, like circumcision.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:31

novack I never thought of circumcision (for non medical reasons) along the same lines as ear piercing. Not saying its wrong, just never thought of it in the same way.

OP posts:
slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:31

Cross post methe

OP posts:
peanutMD · 21/08/2012 19:32

ooh 2 dabs for circumcision on the first page, impressive...
