To think that piercing a toddler's ears isn't right?

An acquaintance of mine has updated on FB about having her 17mo dd's ears pierced this afternoon and has uploaded photos of how 'lovely' she looks.

I can't believe this is even legal! Is it? I'm quite shocked actually, I've never given it that much thought but surely the child should have some kind of choice? What about infection? I remember getting mine done and it hurt quite a bit actually, and I found it quite hard to sleep etc.

I hope they at least gave the little one some kind of numbing cream. Sad

No peanut you're right, it is actually NONE of my business. I shouldn't be lending so much thought to it, but it's quite taken me aback. You don't really see it that much anymore in such young children and I assumed there would be some kind of 'lower age limit'.

But novack (and I completely agree with you btw; I disagree with circumcision), why are so many people so 'meh' about circumcision (non medical) and yet funny about ear piercing?

Slatternly I'm not saying that, I agree with you.

I'm taking the piss :o

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 21/08/2012 19:46

Hi peanut! I'm staying out of this one after last time!

2blessed · 21/08/2012 19:46

My ears were pierced before 6 months and if LO is a girl her ears will be pierced before she is 1. if LO is a boy then dp will want him circumcised.

picnicbasketcase · 21/08/2012 19:47

I wasn't actually saying 'Yawn, done before.' I was just pointing out that it does tend to be said. Seems to happen a lot if anyone mentions P&C parking etc. Really no need to snipe at me.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:48

No peanut I was agreeing with you! It totally is none of my business, I was surprised by my own thought chain tbh Smile apologies for any misunderstandings here! Smile

picnic see my post of 19:25:08. Certainly didn't mean to convey that Smile

Oh that's right pickles you enjoy hurting small children Hmm

Disclaimer: not true but was another term rolled out.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:50

2blessed is it a family tradition for you? Do you not worry about infection etc? Not baiting, just genuine question.

My local Claires where I had dd1s ears pierced (aged 6.5) has a lower age limit of 3 months.

picnicbasketcase · 21/08/2012 19:52

Sorry, slatternly, was responding to Methe's post. I seem to keep x-posting and inadvertently looking like a right cowbag despite actually agreeing with your OP

NovackNGood · 21/08/2012 19:53

Or scarring the little boy for life?

Methe · 21/08/2012 19:54

Lol Picnic, I wasn't being snippy Grin I was just sort of [eyerolling] about it.

MrsRhettButler · 21/08/2012 19:54

there's less chance of a small babies ears becoming infected than the ears of an older child surely? little babies are kept so clean.

cinnamonnut · 21/08/2012 19:54

I think it's stupid too. If they want earrings in later life, they can still have them then!

bitbewildered · 21/08/2012 19:55

I had my ears pierced at 3 months. They were uneven and too high up the lobes. I am 35 and still pissed off about it. Angry

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:57

mrsrhett I don't usually come on the AIBU boards, so no. And unless something directly interests me, I don't click or comment.

DD asked for earrings. She's 2.3 though so if she's still asking at 3 I'll let her have them.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:58

novack a piercing also leaves a permanent mark.
