To think that piercing a toddler's ears isn't right?

An acquaintance of mine has updated on FB about having her 17mo dd's ears pierced this afternoon and has uploaded photos of how 'lovely' she looks.

I can't believe this is even legal! Is it? I'm quite shocked actually, I've never given it that much thought but surely the child should have some kind of choice? What about infection? I remember getting mine done and it hurt quite a bit actually, and I found it quite hard to sleep etc.

I hope they at least gave the little one some kind of numbing cream. Sad

YANBU, I think it looks terrible and unnecessary exposes a toddler to infection and pain.

5madthings · 21/08/2012 19:33

well ear piercing at least can heal up and the holes can go away, you cant grow a foreskin back.

i dont much like it either and wont do it to my dd, she can have hers done in yr 6 at primary just before high school i think, she is only 20mths now tho so i may change my mind!

scentednappyhag · 21/08/2012 19:33

DD, 22 months, has already started pointing to my earrings, pointing at her own ears and shouting 'me!' Hmm she's going to have a long wait Grin
Not my thing, but each to their own.

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:34

I just thought about what about nursery? Will they allow earrings? Because what if another child pulls at them?

So are you a newbie then?

I was told as an oldie I had no business starting a piercing debate :s

LackingNameChangeInspiration · 21/08/2012 19:36

don't clip ons exist any more? I got plastic clip ons if I ever nagged for earings and if I complained that they were tight I was told that real ones hurt much more so it tended to shut me up for a while!

Think I was 10 when I got mine done, they hurt a lot and got infected

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:36

But there's got to be a line surely? If its acceptable to pierce such a young child's ears, is it ok to pierce them twice? Pierce their noses? Confused

My nursery states that the children are not allowed earrings but i've have seen children with them in.

peanutMD · 21/08/2012 19:36

Slatternly I work in nurseries and they do allow earrings, as long as they are studs.

To not allow would discriminate against some cultures e.g spanish

slatternlymother · 21/08/2012 19:37

No, been here since 2009 in various guises Wink

Have marked off Spain, circumcision, Greggs, child abuse, and fruit shoots. Has anyone said the word 'Chav' yet, I dropped my bingo pen and may have missed it.

Lagartijadoesthecrazyshake · 21/08/2012 19:37

I live in Spain and have a 15mo (unpierced) DD. She's only now not routinely mistaken for a boy, even when dressed in pink. I have NEVER come across a baby girl here without earrings. It used to be done in hospital, although I think the state hospitals don't any more. People take the baby to the pharmacy for it once they get out of hospital. I didn't want DD's ears done, but don't really care what other people do. It hurts for a minute, then they forget.

lacking I agree. I had mine done at 13 (quite late I suppose), and I couldn't sleep on my sides for about 3 days without my ears hurting.

Methe · 21/08/2012 19:41

yuh know picnic, people are allowed to discus things that have already been discussed.. MN would be fucking shit really boring without posts like this.

NovackNGood · 21/08/2012 19:42

Imagine how it would feel if it was your penis you'd have to avoid sleeping on your tummy for ages never mind your sides.

peanutMD · 21/08/2012 19:42

Line! :o

cakeismysaviour · 21/08/2012 19:42
