To think that piercing a toddler's ears isn't right?

An acquaintance of mine has updated on FB about having her 17mo dd's ears pierced this afternoon and has uploaded photos of how 'lovely' she looks.

I can't believe this is even legal! Is it? I'm quite shocked actually, I've never given it that much thought but surely the child should have some kind of choice? What about infection? I remember getting mine done and it hurt quite a bit actually, and I found it quite hard to sleep etc.

I hope they at least gave the little one some kind of numbing cream. Sad

I'm intrigued as to where I can find the statistics to back up the 'facts' that MOST little girls have their ears pierced

Can anyone please provide these given that it has been stated at least twice on this thread?

Presumably they must have access to this information.

NovackNGood · 22/08/2012 17:42

Well up untlil a few years ago it was done right after birth in Spanish hospitals almost automatically and by course although now a days they at least ask. Even now you rarely see a baby girl without pierced ears unless they are ex-pats.

McHappyPants2012 · 22/08/2012 17:44

Can i ask what is a Chav and what is wrong with being a Chav.

peanutMD · 22/08/2012 17:45

Novack thanks for your reply :)

With all due respect though Spain is one country, which does not constitute the majority of female children surly?!

I just think its a very sweeping statement and a piss poor come back in an argument.

peanutMD · 22/08/2012 17:46

McHappy are you asking me in particular or generally speaking?

McHappyPants2012 · 22/08/2012 17:48

generally speaking

peanutMD · 22/08/2012 17:56

I'm in Scotland and technically speaking we don't have 'chavs' although we do have 'neds' (Non Educated Delinquents) which I can only assume are the same thing.

where I'm from they can normally be found from the age of 9 upwards wearing massive sovereign rings, big chunky hoop earrings, various tracksuits and hats which seen to balance in to of their heads with a bottle of tonic wine in one hand and a spliff in the other outside any old shop...

This is just a general conception of these people not necessarily how they actually are, it is also why I moved 300 miles away from said area :o

to me it was an issue because you couldn't walk pat them without being asked for something (money, fags, a blow job).

Not particularly sure how it relates to piercing children tbh

alienreflux · 22/08/2012 19:57

feminine, i know circumcision is different to ear piercing!! the thread had evolved into a couple of subjects and i was giving my opinion on both Hmm

katielou2012 · 22/08/2012 21:58

Permanent scars? alien reflux have you actually seen the size of the holes when they pierce ears there the size of pin heads! Lol

Feminine · 23/08/2012 09:23

allien you seemed to have worked yourself in to a little lather over it.

There is no way the two subjects can be discussed under the same banner.

I know you were not the only one.

Justme23 · 23/08/2012 09:51

Chav = Council Housed And Violent.

Which is complete rubbish, I know some very well brought up young adults who seem to insist on speaking like they are from the ghettos in bronx.

Teamthrills · 23/08/2012 10:00

It's completely unnecessary, painful & tacky (imo).

I saw a baby being pierced as I passed Claires last yr - the baby screamed & I thought it was just awful.

Once a child's ears are pierced I'd then spend the rest of the time worrying about the earrings being pulled out or getting infected - horrible.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 23/08/2012 14:27

I didn't know that that was what chav stood for - I didn't think it was an acronym at all? Anyway, round here, it's taken to mean people who would dress in burberry, orange tans, chunky gold jewellery and lots of checked Ben Sherman shirts and, tacky. That could be someone living in a council house or a mansion - nowt to do with money, just taste!

alienreflux · 23/08/2012 14:34

i think that acronym came from a book in 2004 or something. It's not where chav originated from.

NameChangeGalore · 23/08/2012 14:36

Shit happens. Not your problem is it? Stop judging.

NovackNGood · 23/08/2012 16:40

Chav is from Chaval... Spanish for youth...

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 23/08/2012 18:02

That's the nicest definition I've heard yet novack.

Lagartijadoesthecrazyshake · 29/08/2012 21:09

Novack Intrigued. I live in Spain, but I'd never come across that before about the origins of chav. Do you know how it got into common usage in English?

NovackNGood · 29/08/2012 21:14

So am I. Ready for the cup final.

Kayano · 29/08/2012 21:16

We had charvas in the north east
