AIBU to let them clean the bowl?

I have made cakes this morning for after lunch. Just like my Grandma and Mam before me, I always let the DCs scoop up the last bits with a spoon when I have finished filling the fairy cake cases.

My friend was horrified to see me do this and told me it was a disgusting and potentially dangerous thing to do. I may have said "Meh" to this.

So, AIBU to let the DCs have the lovely left-overs?

i think this is the only reason my 2 like making cakes YANBU

FlouncyMcFlouncer · 15/04/2012 10:17

For me, YANBU. Having the cake scrapings is an essential part of childhood IMO. But no doubt lots of people will be along shortly to scream about raw egg yolks :(

Catsmamma · 15/04/2012 10:18

what a kill joy your friend is!

I echo your "Meh" and raise with a "Pahaha"

Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 10:19

YABVVVVVVVVU Do you have any idea of how many children die each year from lickingoutthebowlitis?

ElectricSoftParade · 15/04/2012 10:20

Grin at lickingoutthebowlitis

Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 10:21

Don't laugh. It's a very serious condition. I died from it when I was child. TWICE!

herwegoagain · 15/04/2012 10:22

its a childhood right of passage.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/04/2012 10:23

Wtf is the point of cake making otherwise??

Clary · 15/04/2012 10:24

This is definitely the only reason DD helps me make cakes Grin

A friend once told her child she couldn't eat some raw biscuit dough because it had raw egg in but then drove home with too many kids in her car so one had to sit on an adult's lap Hmm

sarahtigh · 15/04/2012 10:25

my DD loves doing this, i loved it as a child its fine just carry on and both enjoy it

your friend is a paranoid killjoy

SecretNutellaFix · 15/04/2012 10:26

Depends if the were actually sticking their whole head in the bowl, or scraping it clean with spoons.Grin

It's a ritual I have never grown out of and have been known to make a bit more batter than strictly necessary on occasion.

Bambino81 · 15/04/2012 10:27

Uh, my friend is one of those people who disagrees with letting the kids lick out the bowl, she makes me feel bad!!!

i remember sitting waiting by my mums side for her to give me the bowl to lick then sitting right in the middle of the kitchen floor and doing it lol

YANBU ur friend is a party pooper!!!

cocoachannel · 15/04/2012 10:29

I think those who object to kids licking out the bowl obviously didn't have parents/grandparents who baked cakes! You would be unreasonable not to let them do it,

StealthPolarBear · 15/04/2012 10:31

Yes YABU. It's far too dangerous for young tummies, which is what I always tell the children as I get stuck in myself.

Sunnywithachanceofshowers · 15/04/2012 10:31

YANBU at all.

eurochick · 15/04/2012 10:31

It's presumably a raw egg issue? I always lick the bowl and have never yet died from lickingbowlitis. Your friend is being unreasonable.

ElectricSoftParade · 15/04/2012 10:32

Thank you! I really didn't think I was BU and shall continue to let the DCs scavenge what they can Grin.

StealthPolarBear · 15/04/2012 10:33

I was of course lying in my last post. I even let the kids lick the mixer blades. Sometimes I even turn it off first.

Downandoutnumbered · 15/04/2012 10:35

YANBU. DH always scrapes the bowl when I make cakes and is rather sad at the thought that he'll have to compete with DS soon, but it wouldn't cross either of our minds not to let DS do it!

ragged · 15/04/2012 10:35

Another one for "Meh".

Mrsrobertduvall · 15/04/2012 10:35

I thought you were going to say the TOILET bowl.

It's the best bit...I'm going to make a cake this afternoon, and would rather eat the raw mixture than the cooked thing.

bejeezus · 15/04/2012 10:35

Grin stealth

AwkwardMaryHadAnEasterLamb · 15/04/2012 10:36

YANBU but when PFB was little I DID think "Ooh raw egg...surely not."

That concern wore off once I had seen her lick the walls in the shopping centre and not fall sick.

Sweepitundertherug · 15/04/2012 10:36

Yabu. You make the cakes and you lick the bowl. Wink

AliceHurled · 15/04/2012 10:37

In what way dangerous Confused?
