AIBU to let them clean the bowl?

I have made cakes this morning for after lunch. Just like my Grandma and Mam before me, I always let the DCs scoop up the last bits with a spoon when I have finished filling the fairy cake cases.

My friend was horrified to see me do this and told me it was a disgusting and potentially dangerous thing to do. I may have said "Meh" to this.

So, AIBU to let the DCs have the lovely left-overs?

We made cakes yesterday and my dd sat on kitchen floor scraping out the bowl with her hand saying "I am in love" over and over again! How could you deny a child this pleasure?

Btw she is still alive....

Savannahgirl · 15/04/2012 12:52

Licking the bowl after Mum has made cakes is one of life's most wonderful childhood memories!

I make cakes JUST so that my DC's can lick the bowl. It's a ritual in our house Grin

StealthPolarBear · 15/04/2012 12:54

I thought the only real risk was salmonella and chicken were vaccinated now? Raw egg is bleurgh on its own but lovely in mousse and cake mix.

Tanith · 15/04/2012 12:54

I always regard it as an essential prior stage to washing up.
I use organic eggs, just in case, so I reckon I've done my duty by the H&S aspect.

They melted chocolate on Friday - I could practically see through the glass bowl again after they'd finished Grin

suburbandream · 15/04/2012 12:57

Licking out the bowl is the best bit - my dear departed mother used to call it "cook's perks!" Grin

MissMogwi · 15/04/2012 12:57

Grin@ Raven's DD 'I am in love'. A girl after my own heart!

cairnterrier · 15/04/2012 13:00

Anyone else eat the uncooked meringue mixture too? For some reason the bits licked off the beater blades taste sooooooooo much nicer than any left in the bowl. Why is this?

Psammead · 15/04/2012 13:07

I had a monent the first time DD ate raw cake mixture but then I remembered that she once ate a maggot so I let her get on with it.

Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 13:09

In defense of those with lickingbowlitis phobia, eggs haven't always come with a side helping of salmonella. It's a side effect of modern farming and unwillingness to do anything about it. I discovered this when we moved to Sweden and found out that heavily enforced regulations and chicken inspections (they all have to line up on the parade ground) means that there is a guarantee that all eggs and all chicken products are salmonella free. I haven't died once since coming here.

Lexie1970 · 15/04/2012 13:11

When we were little one had bowl and one had spoon - we are still here Grin

eurochick · 15/04/2012 13:12

Chickens are vaccinated here too, Kladdkaka. But I think a lot of people still remember the salmonella scare of the 80s and come over a bit unnecessary at the idea of eating anything containing raw egg.

Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 13:15

I didn't know that. Not that it'd make any difference to me. I'm of the 'what doesn't kill you' brigade. Like food too much to cut something out because I might die. :o

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 15/04/2012 13:17

We get three lots of pleasure out of cake mix round here. I get the biggest scrapings, Dcs get to lick the bowl, Ddog gets the bowl after and then it gets a hot wash in the dishwasher. If you consider eating the cake as well, that's four lots of joy! Grin

squeakytoy · 15/04/2012 13:18

I think if we constantly stressed over what we "might" catch, we would never actually eat anything at all and just starve to death.

Grin
DontCallMeBaby · 15/04/2012 13:27

Co, Kladdkaka, I'd always thought you were a Klingon or something, but I've just googled you and you look delicious! I wonder if DD fancies a nice chocolatey cake mix bowl to lick this afternoon ...

marceline · 15/04/2012 13:30

Right, reading this thread has made me want to make a cake right now! It's been far too long since I've licked a good bowl!

MadameMessy · 15/04/2012 13:37

Another one who thought you meant toilet bowl from the title :o
we do it here all the time. Meh

EndoplasmicReticulum · 15/04/2012 13:37

I don't let mine any more, after son 2 was very very sick after doing so. I have no idea if it was cause and effect or just a coincidence, but cleaning up rivers of vom put me off the idea.

MissMogwi · 15/04/2012 13:45

I've already defrosted my freezer today thanks to Mumsnet, now I'm considering making cakes.

ddubsgirl · 15/04/2012 14:50

leftovers is best bit of making cakes!licking the spoon and blades from mixer! fond times with my mum & nan and i do it with my kids, never been ill in doing this.
blame edwina currie for all this crap about raw eggs!

ElectricSoftParade · 15/04/2012 15:36

Well, the cakes were fab and the DCs aren't dead. Winner all round Grin.

piprabbit · 15/04/2012 15:44

I make enough mix for 12 cupcakes, but only cook 8 cakes (2 each). The rest of the mix is smeared round the bowl and DD, DS and I tuck in. It's the best bit. My spatula work is impressive - there is almost no need to actually wash the bowl by the time I've finished.

PeahenTailFeathers · 15/04/2012 16:14

YAB more U to cook the cake. Raw cake mix is the best food in the world, especially if it's plain vanilla sponge. If it was in my house, it would never reach the oven Grin .

MrsTractor · 15/04/2012 16:15

The reason people always used to say that you shouldn't eat raw cake mixture was because of the potential risk of salmonella, this has almost been elimated from within the British laying flock see here that the risk is so low as to be virtually negligible.

I lick the bowl and always have done, surely part of the pleasure of baking?! Grin YANBU!!

Svrider · 15/04/2012 16:20

I always worry about salmonella (thanks edwina currie)
That's why my dcs are only allowed to lick out the bowl if I'm not looking
Luckily I have an iPod with MN, so "mums not looking" happens quiet a lot Wink
