AIBU to let them clean the bowl?

I have made cakes this morning for after lunch. Just like my Grandma and Mam before me, I always let the DCs scoop up the last bits with a spoon when I have finished filling the fairy cake cases.

My friend was horrified to see me do this and told me it was a disgusting and potentially dangerous thing to do. I may have said "Meh" to this.

So, AIBU to let the DCs have the lovely left-overs?

Licking the bowl is the best bit of cake making. DD just scraped the bowl after we made some fairy cakes.

HateBeingCantDoUpMyJeans · 15/04/2012 10:39

She's just jealous as probay never allowed to do it as a child

givemushypeasachance · 15/04/2012 10:44

My Mum never let us lick cake mixture if it had raw egg in it; we were happy enough licking the bowl and mixers from the icing or eating stray chocolate chips or whatever else instead.

When I make cake now I still don't usually lick the bowl, I just give it a good scrape so it all gets used instead! But buttercream on the other hand - the cake is lucky if it gets any of it after I've had the chef's helping first!

squeakytoy · 15/04/2012 10:45

I used to lick the bowl, and the whisks off the mixer (obviously not while still attached to the mixer itself!).. I am 42 and have never come to any harm from a bit of raw cake mix!

Sunnywithachanceofshowers · 15/04/2012 10:46

LOL @ Stealth.

Indith · 15/04/2012 10:53

We fight over the bowl in our house. Except for ds who is odd and doesn't like it.

Dd likes to help bake and eats some of every stage of the process, including the individual ingredients so will merrily eat flour and butter Hmm.

Clary · 15/04/2012 10:55

uncooked brownie mixture is actually a lot nicer than the cooked one!

There's a William story where he badgers his mum untill she lets him lick the bowl out that always struck a chord with me Grin

Bluestocking · 15/04/2012 10:57

Your friend is mad. Eating what's left in the bowl after making a cake is an essential part of a well-balanced childhood. Despite Kladdkaka's assertion, very few children die from lickingoutthebowlitis, and most of them had an underlying condition like greedylittlemonsterosis already.

Indith · 15/04/2012 10:57

Mmm yes uncooked brownie. And cookie dough, I usually eat about half of that before getting the cookies on the trays :)

VickityBoo · 15/04/2012 10:59

Oh how silly! Of course they should lick the bowl - dd can't as she has a bad reaction to raw eggs (by touch) Sad but she would otherwise.

We used to have a mousse thing when we were kids, made with raw eggs and put in the fridge to set!!

Nanny0gg · 15/04/2012 11:29

Raw cake mix is much nicer than cooked cake.
Especially with currants in it.

jenfraggle · 15/04/2012 11:33

I assume that anyone who doesn't allow the bowl to be licked out would also avoid the various sauces that are made with raw egg such as hollandaise?

TidyDancer · 15/04/2012 11:38

Having no longer having my father or beloved nana around, one of my favourite memories from childhood is getting a lift to my nana's house with my dad while my mum walked with my siblings and the dog so I could get to the mixing bowl first. Grin

OP, YANBU.

MissMogwi · 15/04/2012 11:42

Not lick the bowl? Madness.

Surely that is one of the best parts of making cakes, second only to eating them. We also fight over the melted chocolate when making rice crispy cakes. Until I invoke the 'my house, my melted chocolate' law.

Thetokengirl · 15/04/2012 11:45

YANBU.
My three always compete have a full scale war over licking the bowl.
If they aren't around then I'll do it myself. Grin

Seabright · 15/04/2012 11:46

Don't like cake, but love cake mix. Plain vanilla - yum!

But the you are talking to the person who decided sterilising baby stuff was pointless after I spotted DD licking the patch of carpet where my dog had just been laying.

My NCT group were horrified (and not for the last time).

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 15/04/2012 11:55

DD and I have both died this morning I have a meringue the oven and a licked clean bowl. Ds would have died too but we didn't tell him what we were up to.

When Pg with dd I made up bowls cake mix and ate the lot, none went in the oven. My mother disapproved and kept sneaking into my house and stealing my eggs. I simply bought more eggs. On hindsight I think my Mums Egg mountain may have contributed to my fathers heart attack last year. Blush

Sorry Dad

FrankWippery · 15/04/2012 11:58

I was under the impression that it is actual law to polish off half the cake batter? I would actually weep if I saw someone rinsing it off.

TerraNotSoFirma · 15/04/2012 11:59

DH's grandparents lived on a croft and he came in one day to see the baking bowl and spoon sitting on the side, asked his granny if he could scrape the bowl.

Yes says granny, The bowl had not been cake mix but had been used to make up milk/food for one of the lambs :)

Evil granny :)

BabyDubsEverywhere · 15/04/2012 12:04

I aim to eat about half the cake mix of any batch of cakes i cook...that way if the cake are a flop i havent wasted all the ingredients Grin

Tis a good system :)

letsblowthistacostand · 15/04/2012 12:40

Dd1 can't decide if the best bit is the butter & sugar creamed together or the finished batter. We seem to make a lot of banana bread so I figure it's good for her. Fruit, right?

NanettaStocker · 15/04/2012 12:47

I haven't got a problem with it, but I do prefer to stick the bowl in the microwave for 30 secs - 1min and eat the resulting cakey leftovers. It's still nice and gooey in places but also warm.

FrankWippery · 15/04/2012 12:48

I may have possibly made cake batter and eaten the lot once or ten times

cory · 15/04/2012 12:50

Grin at Kladdkaka

with your nickname I'd have thought your demise was inevitable: twice seems a very low number under the circs

bochead · 15/04/2012 12:51

This brings back fond memories of being chewed out by the HV for the crime of letting my DS bowl lick. The raw egg risk is apparentely far more important than childhood memory creation.

I totally ignored her and carried on, on the grounds that generations of Granny's cant be wrong (after all we are still here!).

Aged 7 he's able to make his own cupcakes, muffins and bread - all this lazy Mum has to do is "oven duty" nowadays.

He also has a great immune system from all those filched unwashed berries straight off the plant Wink & raw carrots nicked straight from the veg basket Wink. I am fussy about handwashing before meals but otherwise work on the theory a lick of dirt builds the immune system & is better than a kid that thinks food comes only in prepackaged cardboard boxes.

Keep calm and carry on licking that bowl - it's a grand British tradition!
