AIBU to let them clean the bowl?

I have made cakes this morning for after lunch. Just like my Grandma and Mam before me, I always let the DCs scoop up the last bits with a spoon when I have finished filling the fairy cake cases.

My friend was horrified to see me do this and told me it was a disgusting and potentially dangerous thing to do. I may have said "Meh" to this.

So, AIBU to let the DCs have the lovely left-overs?

There are definate advantages to being here: zombie proof nuclear bunkers, pick-n-mix supermarkets, kladdkaka

And disadvantages: spiders in the bunkers, moose that can't handle their alcohol, no golden syrup (has to be smuggled in by grandma)

StealthPolarBear · 15/04/2012 20:22

Where are you and what is kladhkaka?

AKMD · 15/04/2012 20:23

YANBU. I will never forget the devastation the days I:

  1. was forbidden by my mother from eating frozen fish fingers straight out of the freezer :(
  2. as an adult, made a cake and then realised that I couldn't lick the bowl because I was pg with DS and minding all the rules. I hate being pg Angry hides Brie at the back of the fridge
Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 20:26

I'm in Sweden. Kladdkaka is a sort of sticky chocolate brownie cake that isn't quite cooked in the middle. It's why Sweden always comes out top of international polls on where's best to live.

"Dark, cold, wilderness, wild dangerous animals, alcohol more expensive than housing"
"but they have kladdkaka"
"ok Sweden wins"

StealthPolarBear · 15/04/2012 20:28

Yes but don't they have fantastic quality of life (due to the uncooked brownie) and very high life expectancy?

Spuddybean · 15/04/2012 20:37

Bllleeeuuurch! Raw cake mix is disgusting (although cooked cake isn't that great either). I remember mum trying to get me to lick the bowl. I always had a polite taste then turned my nose up. Apparently it was a tradition from her childhood she wanted to replicate...i was such a disappointment!

Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 20:42

Yes they do. It's a much simpler life than the UK. Simpler food, simpler hobbies. Better work:life balance. Kind of reminds me of The Darling Buds of May.

Rowgtfc72 · 15/04/2012 20:51

Im disappointed now that when I make cakes Dp and dd appear from nowhere when the bowl needs licking. Im learning to make cakes when Dp is at work and Dd in bed.Im sure I must have died several times a week in the seventies from licking mums cake bowl.Smile

DoesItComeInBlack · 15/04/2012 21:02

My dd has to fight her dad and big brother to get to the bowl, Once My DM came in and caught all 3 of them totally coated with chocolate cake batter.
It looked like a dirty protest.

Pippinintherain · 15/04/2012 21:12

Raw cake mix is so much nicer than cake.

FACT.

PestoPenguin · 15/04/2012 21:16

I was never allowed to lick the raw mix as a child Sad because of my Mum's concerns about raw eggs. She is still obsessive about it (and rare meat and other things), and is horrified that I and all the DCs happily lick away. As eggs are vaccinated against salmonella now I don't see it as a big risk Grin.

5madthings · 15/04/2012 21:23

YANBU licking out the bowl is the BEST bit about making cakes, i try and do it without having to share with my kids as i love it soo much! Grin

just use good quality eggs, lion marked, free range etc its fine! i have always done it, my mum did it with us, my mil is like your friend tho and HORRIFIED at it! i just silently roll my eyes at her Grin

5madthings · 15/04/2012 21:24

oh btw the risk with salmonella etc is actually higher from touching the egg shell, you should always wash your hands after doing so apparently, but the egg itself if good quality is generally fine, even when raw!

LilRedWG · 15/04/2012 21:28

My sister still won't let her 16 and 14 year old do this. Hmm DD (5) loves it!

Bohica · 15/04/2012 21:34

2 bowls get regular licking in our house.

Cake mix bowls & stuffing mix bowls!

I'm only telling you this so I can mark my place for that mars bar cake recipe Grin

TheCunningStunt · 15/04/2012 21:36

My mum never baked so we had to wait to see my gran so we could bake and lick the bowl. I am a prolific baker now and can't help myself. My two year old asks to bake, then disappears to play whilst I do all the work and magically reappears in time to lick the bowlBlushGrin. It's a right of passage!!!!

HoldOnWoody · 15/04/2012 21:39

Blimey, I thought this was going to be about licking the toilet bowl clean Grin

AKMD · 15/04/2012 21:47

I was thinking back to the thread about weird host/esses and imagining the OP letting her smelly dogs lick her guests' pudding bowls out!

MsVestibule · 15/04/2012 22:03

Does anybody actually know anybody who's caught salmonella poisoning from raw eggs? Whilst pg with DC1, I was fanatical about following the "What Not To Eat" rules. Whilst pg with DC2, I realised that 1. Salmonella poisoning wouldn't actually harm the baby (just me) and 2. Nobody in the history of the world, ever, had caught salmonella from uncooked eggs, so reverted to my "Must Eat A Bacon And Runny Egg Sandwich On The Friday Morning Office Hot Butty Run" rule. Much to the horror of some of my colleagues.

And I honestly thought I was the only person who ever made a batch of cake batter, just so I could eat the whole thing raw!!! Just the one egg and 2oz each of butter, sugar and flour, though. I wouldn't want anybody to think I'm greedy.

wasabipeanut · 15/04/2012 22:09

YANBU. I have a sequence of 4 pics of DS aged about 2 and a half licking a spatua of choc cake batter, then transferring bowl over his head completely, then finally standing there grinning his head off with his face and hair half covered in cake mix! It is a glorious sequence - the sheer joy shines out.

Your friend is a killjoy!

Debeez · 15/04/2012 22:13

My favorite was Christmas Cake mix. No spoons in this family, finger licking commoners, again like Bohica I'm sharing to mark my place on the Mars Bar Cake Thread. DP has just told me he has tried this gem previously, we are doing it on Sat :)

Minshu · 15/04/2012 22:56

My brother and I always did it, my paranoid friend lets her kids do it, so I let my DD do it. Poor DP doesn't often get a look in.

Where's the mars bar cake thread? SIL made a delicious one last weekend...

Kladdkaka · 15/04/2012 23:00

Page 4 of this one Minshu

Tip for Mars Bar Cake: Use milk chocolate on the top. Dark chocolate spoils it.

Minshu · 15/04/2012 23:13

D'oh Blush - many thanks :)

Bohica · 16/04/2012 16:41

We have just made mars bar cakes and they are in the freezer so they will be ready for after dinner.

I think dinner will be a small affair as DC are still licking the bowls and spoons Grin
