Multiculturalism has failed

Now whilst i believe the debate itself has merit ( though think that DC has put a rather disturbing anti islamic slant on it)
I do not think it the wisest day to do so given that there is a planned march by the English Defence League (think BNP with more hair) today

march in Luton

Bringnbuy - you are saying that the 'problem with Muslims' is that they reject 'our' (undefined) values. That is just silly.

What is the British way of life? What if Muslim immigrants decided to become a part of a Deviant British Subculture? Punks, rad fatties, goths. Would that be more acceptable?

Immigrants should not have to be grateful. Read some Kant,Levinas and Derrida on ethics and hospitality, not saying they are right but they make interesting thought provoking points about the nature of hospitality. And of course read the counter literature too, if indeed there is any, maybe the BNP library will have some.

I love being a bleeding hearted wishy washy liberal (with a small l) thanks Grin Wine

cantspel · 05/02/2011 22:44

I went to lidal today and as i was leaving there was some bloke dressed in one of those islamic outfits (sorry dont know what they are called but the lose cotton trousers which are 3 inches to short for their legs and a white over tunic with a pair of sandals).

It was lashing with rain, freezing cold and blowing a gale. i dont care what anyone wears but he must of been freezing.
These outfits are designed for far hotter climates than we have and it would be a lot more sensible to at least wear some proper shoes and a coat even if you wanted to wear cultural clothes.

gordyslovesheep · 05/02/2011 22:46

have you seen the definately not muslim women out in Newcastle on a Sat night though ?

maybe he was trying to be british?

tethersend · 05/02/2011 22:46

Why is anybody debating multiculturalism in this way?

It's here- it's already happened.

StarlightPrincess · 05/02/2011 22:47

No probs! I like being someone who actually has the guts to say what I think without worrying about being PC!

bringnbuy · 05/02/2011 22:48

notjust - i've known a few people who have emigrated and they actually chose the country they wanted to live in and then applied to jobs in that country. that is the way dh & i would do it too, choose country first and then work out work, it can work both ways. ps: i had actually said that i DON'T think a muslim women should ie not wear a scarf, i don't tbh care what people wear and i don't think they should have to water down their culture either but it would be nice to think that people who have chosen to live here don't hate the indigenous population, not too much to ask.

Not anonymous, I have my pictures up, I don't hide like some on here. I'd say what I think to anyone, and I do. Free speech and all that.

cantspel · 05/02/2011 22:52

Beer maybe he could and maybe he couldn't. i will never know as i didn't have time to give him a spelling test.

The simple fact was he wasn't dressed for the british weather. he could shop naked for all i care but dont expect people not to comment on it. After all there is enough comments on here about young girls looking orange and skirts like fan belts so what is the difference. Or can we not mention it just because he was clearly not british?

gordyslovesheep · 05/02/2011 22:52

I speak my mind - but without expressing bigotted views - why it's pc gooorn mad I tell you Grin

gordyslovesheep · 05/02/2011 22:53

you can mention what you want but people don't have to take you seriously - I didn;t I thought you where joking Grin

Thank you cantspel IMO this is exactly the problem DC was trying to convey today.

StarlightPrincess · 05/02/2011 22:56

Exactly how are my views bigotted? Because I think that people who choose to live in a country should at least try and intergrate with the people already living here, and not look down on them, and live in their own little bubble?

StarlightPrincess · 05/02/2011 22:57

*integrate

gordyslovesheep · 05/02/2011 22:57

pmsl the DC is more of a plonker than I thought

please PLEASE tell me where you have been told you can't comment on it please do

it's this imagined almost paranoic view of being chatised and silence SOME people in this country have that is damaging - not immigration

cantspel · 05/02/2011 22:58

How can you not notice? i notice most people around me same way i would notice if a bloke had his trousers having around his thigns gansta style.

bringnbuy · 05/02/2011 22:58

it's not at all silly to say i feel alot of the muslim community reject the way british way of life or at least don't hide their contempt for it. you talk as if all british people walk around naked and get pg when young/drink too much. how narrow minded is that & racist. try driving out of the city to the suburbs, i doubt you will see so many teenage pregnancys there etc. it is because of this that so many people are fed up with attitudes like yours. i doubt the french are thrilled that there are so many british expats living there, i don't blame the french however at least the british expats don't hate the french and have no respect for them and openly bad mouth their way of life.

gordyslovesheep · 05/02/2011 23:00

do YOU intergrate maybe lack of intergration is TWO WAY - if people feel unwelcome why SHOULD they intergrate

I am white British but I wouldn;t intergrate with all white british people

What a lot of people mean by intergrate is be like us and do as we say

or do you mean intergate like the British in Spain Grin

nzshar · 05/02/2011 23:00

Whether I agree with DC or not it is indeed a view ,imagined or otherwise, that people cannot comment of such things for fear of being classed as racist. Sad but true.

ScaredOfCows · 05/02/2011 23:01

LOTM - I've been on this forum for some years now and I can honestly say that no other poster has ever wound me up as much as you. Yeah, we get get trolls and twats sometimes, but one can treat them with humour. You, however, are a different kettle of fish completely. I cannot believe that you speak with such agression towards the indigenous people of the country you choose to live in and reap the benefits off. You disgust me.
