Sutton High Street

In thinking that the people who inflicted the new and 'improved' Sutton High Street' on us should all be sacked?

I actually think it's a shame we can't tie them to the benches,(which they obviously rescued from a skip/dump) and give them all a sound public flogging!

Not only did someone design this sorry-looking High Street but lots of other twats actually thought it was good enough to inflict on us!

So, what have we got for our millions? A truly shitty High Street which I can't bear to see so I have stopped shopping in Sutton. We've got so many different types of paving on the ground that it looks like someone's started doing it and changed their minds several times, the above-mentioned benches and a stupid bloody 'farm'.

It looks so horrendous that it truly does have to be seen to be believed. It's a complete bloody embarrassment. (When we have visitors we make sure they don't go within a mile of it) and it really is taking the fucking piss out of Sutton's Council-tax payers. I'm so angry about it, even now, months/years? later. Why would anyone want to shop in Sutton and have the sight of the High Street inflicted on them when they can't even stop for a rest on a decent bloody bench. Epsom, Kingston, Croydon are all 'state-of-the-art' compared to this fucking tip of a High Street.

I used to live in South Croydon, apart from the shopping centre and some quite nice places to eat, it is a shithole.

I have never been to Sutton, but I probably wouldn't like it as I hate that whole Surrey area as it's just a tag on to London. And after living and working in London for 4 years I DETEST it and would never go anywhere near our "great" capital again.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2011 09:48

"Carshalton looks every so pretty"

hahahaha :o Yes, that particular bit does look pretty (and you have to be talking abut the high street bit near the ponds and the catholic girls school). Just that bit... it's bog standard suburbia other than that, with nice bits and shite bits.

Poshpaws · 18/01/2011 10:07

Agree SD. Carshalton Beeches and Village are nice, the other parts.....

I also remember the old Whitgift Centre with the dodgy pub in the middle. It's much better now.

I live in the borough of Sutton, but I never go to Sutton High Street because of it's rep from when I grew up...in Croydon borough Grin.

Still, Croydon has really gone down hill. When I was growing up, it was all 'Terry and June' like, now it is a lot scummier, although there are still some very nice parts.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2011 11:57

Terry and June are alive and well and living in Sanderstead :o

bigcar · 18/01/2011 12:48

just in case you haven't seen it before, elephants in Carshalton ponds. Andrews in Carshalton high street used to have a photo of a cement mixer that had gone into the ponds, not quite the same somehow.

[sigh]

bigcar · 18/01/2011 12:49

oops, should have said it's the bottom picture Blush

MarniesMummy · 18/01/2011 13:00

I lived in Sutton about 35years ago, when I wasn't part of Greater London. It was lovely (little shops, buses down the high street, no st nicholas centre, in fact I remember the year we went off for our christmas holidays and came back to discover that we'd lost about 4/5 of our playground to what was to become St Nicholas Way (or the big street that runs behind and parallel to the high street).

By the time I left there were many letters in the local paper (advertiser?) arguing the toss about whether they were in fact part of Greater London. (Guess who was losing? Grin)

I also lived in Carshalton for a bit.

I can't imagine what it's like now, it sounds a lifetime away from the Sutton that I first remember. However when I left to go to Uni (in late 80's) it was already (imo) an utter shithole.

As for Carshalton, very pretty, nightmare to live in when you're a teenager.

Sutton always had a dodgy part as far as I recall, I think anywhere outside of South? (towards Banstead) and west? (towards cheam) was dodgy.

It is nice to lurk around your discussion though!

I remember my parents etc being horrified when Tesco's moved in! There goes the neighbourhood eh?

MarniesMummy · 18/01/2011 13:01

Hasn't more than one decapitated head been found in Carshalton ponds over the years?

yes there's a park, quite a nice one, take some bread for the ducks too. The childrens play area is good there, there's toilets next to the cafe in the park.

unhappyshopper · 18/01/2011 14:31

A body been found on Mitcham Common today :(

carminaburana · 18/01/2011 14:32

Sutton is not "an utter shithole" - it has it's less than desirable parts but 90% of the area is fine.

it's ok - we laugh at the snobs who pay a million quid to live in Hoxton - ha ha ha , now that is a shithole

some people are postcode snobs and always will be. that's fine.

Sorry Carmina, (I can't believe I'm causing offence from nearly a quarter of a century and about 250 miles away).

I (am)/was a postcode snob when I lived there (and probably still am). I've no idea how bad Sutton is today but it wasn't that great for me when I was 16-18. I seem to remember that my mates and I always opted to go out in central London instead of Sutton.

auntevil · 18/01/2011 18:30

Does anyone know if it was a headless body found on Mitcham common? A head was found last autumn, i think, in the River Wandle - in Mitcham. Is that the one you were thinking of MarniesMummy?

carminaburana · 18/01/2011 22:58

MM - sorry if i came across a bit heavy earlier, ( i'm actally on the kingston borders of LBS & only go out in wimbledon or clapham ) i'm just defensive of my "area" iykwim.

FunnysInTheGarden · 18/01/2011 23:02

sorry, but where the fuck is Sutton?

carminaburana · 18/01/2011 23:06

it's an area just outside london ( south )

FunnysInTheGarden · 18/01/2011 23:08

oh right, thats why I don't know. Anyhoo I bet the High Street is lovely.................

QueenGigantaurofMnet · 18/01/2011 23:12

this thread has made me really "home"sick.

I moved out of Wimbledon when i left Xp and live in sussex now.

I miss the shitness of it all.

CuddlyNotFat · 18/01/2011 23:15

I was born in Sutton. And I went to school there - I remember being sent home from school once because there were reports of riots being planned...see, it's always been a classy place!
(Any ex-SHS girls out there?)

SoupDragon · 19/01/2011 07:46

Oh, I remember the mass school v school fights being planned. Not SHS though - GHS.

SoupDragon · 19/01/2011 07:47

Oooh, Carmina... anywhere near Worcester Park? I grew up there.

QuintessentialShadows · 19/01/2011 08:02

Regrettably (?) I have never been in Sutton.
I sort of like Kingston, and Bromley. (Going to Bromley this weekend)
But I love Wimbledon Village and Richmond. East Sheen and Barnes too.
Putney High Street has become a bit of a dump. Mostly due to the traffic and the yuck shop selection. BHS, coupled with specialist baking stores, Oliver Bonaz, Starbucks, a few poundshops, a few amusement places, and betting shops, tk max and sportsworld. Gone are the nice wine shops, and nice clothes shops. Sad

carminaburana · 19/01/2011 08:11

SD; yep, I live in WP.
