Sutton High Street

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 18:34

In thinking that the people who inflicted the new and 'improved' Sutton High Street' on us should all be sacked?

I actually think it's a shame we can't tie them to the benches,(which they obviously rescued from a skip/dump) and give them all a sound public flogging!

Not only did someone design this sorry-looking High Street but lots of other twats actually thought it was good enough to inflict on us!

So, what have we got for our millions? A truly shitty High Street which I can't bear to see so I have stopped shopping in Sutton. We've got so many different types of paving on the ground that it looks like someone's started doing it and changed their minds several times, the above-mentioned benches and a stupid bloody 'farm'.

It looks so horrendous that it truly does have to be seen to be believed. It's a complete bloody embarrassment. (When we have visitors we make sure they don't go within a mile of it) and it really is taking the fucking piss out of Sutton's Council-tax payers. I'm so angry about it, even now, months/years? later. Why would anyone want to shop in Sutton and have the sight of the High Street inflicted on them when they can't even stop for a rest on a decent bloody bench. Epsom, Kingston, Croydon are all 'state-of-the-art' compared to this fucking tip of a High Street.

LOL Deaddei re your first date. My DH had a 4-bed detached when we met, but I didn't realise until after our wedding that it was worth less than my one-bed pad in Streatham, 'cos his was in Yorkshire Shock. Did consider a quickie divorce, but as he's very Darcy-like decided to stick with him Wink.

I would choose croydon over sutton anyday...

Now I live in Brighton I dont have to go back

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 20:37

PatriciaHolm You're right to be afraid Grin Don't even consider Sutton High Street if you're not brave enough for Croydon.

Mine is more Mr Bean.

jugglers · 15/01/2011 20:38

God, I have lived in nearly all of the drossy places mentioned above (and some of the posher ones too!!)

Banstead's good for charity shops and Epsom too. I like Bromley and Kingston for shopping. And Guildford.

When I was younger, there were rumours that there were nuclear bombs aimed at Croydon because of all the insurance companies there at the time - sometimes the thought of a slip on the red button doesn't seem like such a bad idea!!!

When I lived there, once had my wheels nicked off my metro and another time a dawn raid on the flats where I lived (communal front door - converted Victorian house)

foundinhongkong · 15/01/2011 20:38

Ah Slutton. Not been there for a while :o

Oh please to the people complaining about Croydon town centre, you think that's bad? It has much worse places lurking within it's borough. Try New Addington - now that place makes me weep!

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 20:41

LOL AGAIN! Mine was Darcy when we met but having being subjected to 20 years of 'reminding' he can sometimes turn into Basil Fawlty.

Gorgeousx get yourself on that A3 and head to Guildford for a little slice of heaven......actually prefer it to Kingston now Grin

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 20:47

I lived in the Croydon area for over 50 years and moved away just over 4 1/2 years ago. You are reminding me of why we moved. My local shopping areas now are Bath, Bristol and Trowbridge but they also have areas where you don't want to shop.

kerrykatonaskebab · 15/01/2011 20:50

Get on the train at Sutton, get off Clapham Junction, et voila.. chichi northcote road shopping heaven.

sofaaddict · 15/01/2011 20:53

I have seen the log benches when they first went in (before Christmas I think) GorgeousX but my DH thought the council had taken them out due to all of the complaints?!? Haven't been back since so don't know. Sutton is handy for parking in Asda and nipping in to other shops quickly, then spending £5 in Asda on stuff you need to get your car parking money back! Grin It has had a reputation as the worst shopping area for as long as I've lived in and around the area. I tend to flit between Epsom, Kingston, Wimbledon, Sutton and Putney. No loyalty me!

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 20:53

Bath, Bristol and Trowbridge.... Oh go away Larry5 and be smug somewhere else Wink

OP posts:
GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 20:57

sofaaddict - don't know if the logs have gone but the bits of old wood attached to the ground with bits of plastic that have been deemed to be 'benches' are still there!

sofaaddict · 15/01/2011 21:00

I very sadly researched it in Google

www.thisislocallondon.co.uk/news/8739987.Council_faces___800k_overspend_on_Sutton_High_Street/

Poor little log bench is coned off.

Ewe · 15/01/2011 21:01

YANBU Sutton is vile, always has been, even more so now. Most disappointing.

I do most of my shopping in Epsom but did used like popping to Sutton for topshop, don't even bother anymore.

Can't believe there are so many locals!

sofaaddict · 15/01/2011 21:04

I was thinking the same Ewe. Dare there ever be MN meet up on Sutton high street??? Grin

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 21:05

Ewe Thank you, thank you, thank you. Hardly anyone who has been on here has actually SEEN it. Isn't it just the worst thing ever? I mean can you believe that people actually sat around a table and decided that it would be a Fab idea!

I'm really looking forward to your post when you visit the W. schools ... . Grin

GORGEOUSX · 15/01/2011 22:24

What are W. schools? Confused

OP posts:
gleechie · 15/01/2011 22:31

If you think Sutton/Croydon is bad try visiting Swindon Shock

surreygirl · 15/01/2011 22:35

I've lived in Sutton, Croydon and Epsom and can only agree with elephantjelly Grin

Epsom's good for day-to-day shopping but can't beat Kingston for John Lewis and Lush!
