ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 12:49

Post an AIBU from the point of view of a fictional character (from novels/nursery rhymes/plays etc) and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please :)

AIBU to be protective of my DD?

Ooh family trouble eh? Are you thinking of pretending you don't know them? In which case YAprobablyBU. Or just going on a nice jaunt overseas?

(realises stupid computer won't do pointy bracket things)

(comes running anyway at the smell of muffins)

(sits in corner of raft eating muffin, being clueless and wondering if pointy bracket things actually have a proper name)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 29/11/2010 15:09

Yes, silly treacle. They are called Pointy Bracket Things.

Actually I have sadly just googled and they are just inequality signs, but used as a substitute for slightly less pointy brackets, called chevrons, that are not on the keyboards.

Bet you're glad you asked, eh?

So...read any good books lately?

Pogleswood · 29/11/2010 19:11

Hello - aah,coffee and muffins,just what I need!
OK.here is my AIBU handily summarised in the hope that one of you will solve it and set me free!!
AIBU to lie about my identity?...I'm in disguise at the moment, but we've been keeping our identity secret for so long now it's become second nature...
...when I went off to fight,I'd hoped we'd be able to live as ourselves again. If only I could get the house back...

Then I ran out of steam - above is Option A but here are B and C(same book):Option B - AIBU to pretend the children are my own grandchildren,Option C,WWBU to burn the house....

Then

Option A:If I'd admitted who I really was who can tell what would have happened, with the country as it is now...
Option B: I had to explain the children suddenly coming to live with me somehow...
Option C: We were definitely not BU to burn the house, given that its owner had died following the Man of Blood....(Actually,burning the house may have been an accident - I can't quite remember as I hated fires as a child and fast forwarded past that bit! )

Pogleswood · 29/11/2010 19:24

And to continue

(And how nice to know the correct name for Pointy Bracket Things as one uses them Grin)

In Option A:I can't go on here - I plan to go to France until the King returns to his rightful place...
Option B:Well, they are good children, quick to learn all I can teach them about life in the forest...
And Option C:Now the Man of Blood himself is dead, and good riddance....

Sorry about all this Blush

llandb · 30/11/2010 00:06

Pogle - fascinating but I don't know it (but someone please guess it so I can go and read it :o)

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/11/2010 08:42

Ooooooooh are you Children of the New Forest and their pals?

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/11/2010 08:44

In which case I also fast forwarded past the fire - was terrified of them - but am pretty sure it was done on purpose. Didn't the mother die?

OP posts:
llandb · 30/11/2010 18:23

Wossat book then?

OK, I'm going to do a quick one.

AIBU to impose an arbitrary-sounding rule?

llandb · 30/11/2010 18:26

Not really into this retrospective correction lark or I'd be here all day - except when not at all obvious what was meant

with not wht. WHT sounds like acronym for something sweary :o

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 30/11/2010 18:27

llandb - did i see on another thread that you're about to have a littel baybee? :)

Ooh I'm intrigued by arbitrary sounding rule...Is it off the Do Not Go Into The Forbidden Forest/Secret Chamber/Third Room On The Left type rule? Because, tbh, better to just put up a sign saying Forest Closed For Repairs or you'll just get the little blighter's interest piqued.

OP posts:
llandb · 30/11/2010 18:44

Well, the little blighter wanted to do it anyway; no piquing of interest there. I knew that it wasn't as safe as it looked but didn't see the need to explain - my word ought to have been sufficient!

Pogleswood · 30/11/2010 21:10

Yay! Well done,Elephants! Have a small tree as a prize....
Don't understand any of the rest of it,except that you are having a baby tomorrow, llandb, if I have understood the code correctly Smile Will be thinking of you and awaiting news!

MCP....

llandb · 30/11/2010 22:34

Ta, Pogle (either that or a conservatory built - that would probably have been a better move :o).

So you'd better guess mine quickly before I go AWOL for a couple of days!

... I have instructed the children, and assume that they will obey me. I never thought that one of them would take it into her head that I was being just plain mean!...

Pogle, what was yours? Something about children and a new forest - I could probably just Google it rather than asking, but it's much easier more conversational to be lazy and ask.

CJCregg · 30/11/2010 22:55

Ooh, llandb, hope everything goes well tomorrow - how exciting!

Was your rule something to do with staying away from the new swing?

I just can't stand my bloody family anymore, they're all mad as a sack of cats, and I have Important Work to do. I just want some peace and quiet, dammit.

llandb · 30/11/2010 23:16

Ta CJ :) and well done - have a crotchetty invalid niece who will grow to love you!

Hmm, CJ, is it Important learned work, or Important some other kind of work?

Pogleswood · 01/12/2010 08:36

Morning! Mine, llandb, was The Children of the New Forest,a book about, well, children. And, as you guessed, the New Forest Grin - no surprises there then...! (not done terribly well because it is a very long time since I read it!)

MCP,CJ!
We are now snowed in (tentative cries of Hooray!) but as I don't want to go and gambol in the snow right this minute, and I don't want to do housework stuff (well,we are Snowed In - who wants to do housework??) I feel at a bit of a loose end! Will try to think of a new AIBU...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 01/12/2010 08:45

oh damn llandb I would have so known your were mean Aunt Thingy (Lizzy?) from "my word ought to have been sufficient"! Is anyone else disappointed that IRL illnesses do not really make people saintly? I feel I was lied to by my Victorian children's literature :)

llandb - it was...wait for it...Children of the New Forest by Captain Fred Marrryatt IIRC. Lots of derring do set in the civil war.

Love the tree - my future kids can now be the children of the incredibly new but not very dense forest.

CJ - despite your complaints about family life, do you occasionally sneak back to the family hearth in search of biscuits? And then wonder why there aren't any?

Best best best of luck today llandb!!!! Sunroof jobbie = sounds complicated but is it a planned caesarian (can't spell sorry, that may be a pizza or something)? In which case, we could have our first little AIBU Booklet today? I will also be awaiting news.

OP posts:
Pogleswood · 01/12/2010 09:01

We went on our hols to the New Forest when DS was little and he couldn't quite get the name, so we were in The New Woods for the duration - that and the Island of Wight Smile

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 02/12/2010 14:08

awww New Woods. That reminds me of this lovely poem.

OP posts:
ElephantsAndMiasmas · 02/12/2010 14:11

Quick one - AIBU to be worried about the strange noises?

OP posts:
CJCregg · 02/12/2010 21:13

Oops, Elephants ... The shame Blush - I can't actually remember if I'm a biscuit thief or not, haven't read this one for years. I'm just really, really struggling to write my second novel, and they're all so distracting with their histrionics.

Poor Katy - such a harsh punishment for a brief moment of disobedience ...

MoominMymbleandMy · 03/12/2010 00:34

Hooray, hooray, you're all still here.Xmas Smile Sorry for the extended absence. I really didn't mean it to be for so long! I must stop name-changing because it always seems to herald an unexpected disappearance on my part.Xmas Blush

And VIP newsflash - llandb's AIBU Booklet has landed safely and he is lovely! Smile Smile Smile

I don't think I have a prayer of ever catching up on all I've missed, but is one of your offspring planning to do a spot of castle capturing, CJ?

Oh and AIBU to cut my hair?

MoominMymbleandMy · 03/12/2010 02:13

PS Where is dear little Pointless?!?!?!?!

CJCregg · 03/12/2010 10:03

Moomin, Moomin, MOOMIN!

How utterly gorgeous to see you - we missed you Xmas Sad

And, of course, you've leapt back into the thread at full tilt and got mine in one. Bah.

Haircutting? Hmmm ... need a bit more detail, please. Is it very long? Are you disguising yourself as a boy? Do you need to sell it?

btw, Pointless is having an extended visit with Mary and her little lamb - some other people got a bit nasty about him so I thought it best that he have some shore leave for a while ...
