Post an AIBU from the point of view of a fictional character (from novels/nursery rhymes/plays etc) and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please :)

AIBU to be protective of my DD?

Hello!

I was thinking about this lovely thread yesterday and thought I'd come and visit.

I was in Waterstone's Piccadilly yesterday and just overwhelmed by the number of books out there. And yet it's been so long since I've read something new. No wonder I haven't been around for a while ...

So, I don't have a new AIBU but am working on it. In the meantime, how is everyone?

steamedtreaclesponge · 07/07/2011 10:06

CJ! And llandb! HELLO!

I think my AIBU from several months ago is still unsolved Smile

CJCregg · 07/07/2011 10:31

Hi Treacle!

Save me a bit, won't you?

Can you give me a summary? Not lazy much but need a gentle reintroduction, I think ...

llandb · 08/07/2011 16:30

Wahoo! CJ, treacle! (Roll call)

steamedtreaclesponge · 08/07/2011 16:33

AIBU in thinking she's a bit of a drag?
She's no fun at all. I don't know why she won't join in with all of us...
...I suppose some people would think it improper. But I can't see what we're doing wrong, and if my brother approves then it must be OK...

Although I think Elephants may have guessed it - but that was months ago and she's not here so knock yourselves out!

MoominMymbleandMy · 09/07/2011 10:25

Morning fellow rafters, and long time no see!

llandb · 10/07/2011 22:25

Moomin! I saw a real water rat once - in Australia, of all places! I assume it's the same as the European version. It had a white tail-tip, which, according to the locals, was proof that I had really seen one and not a landlubber rat who had fallen into the drink.

Treacle! What was yours? (Awards bad pun prize to Moomin)

Moomin', in the general course of things, I would say YANBU. So many tabs and books to read; so litttle time. But do be careful not to tire yourself too much for future reading. Or are you trying to spy a magical visitor?

On account of not having a proper book for aaaages....
AIBU not to thank my host?

MoominMuggleandMy · 10/07/2011 22:48

llandb! Hooray! We can flounder together. [hsmile]

The things one learns on this thread. It seems the beastie with a white tail you saw wasn't a bog standard rat fallen in the drink, but neither was he a relation of the Mole's pal. Or so I've just discovered here.

It seems a bit U not to thank your host but no doubt you have your reasons. Was the hospitality not up to snuff?

...It's not that I'm not tired. I'm shattered. But I'm too frightened to sleep...

llandb · 10/07/2011 23:38

Moomin! The things you learn! (and thankyou for the link). I saw the beastie 14 years ago, and, would you believe, I never looked it up in all that time? So I didn't realise that it wasn't a true rat. It wasn't eating any frogs or eggs or mice, but merrily cavorting in the stream. What little I saw of it looked for all the world like a realio trulio rat (and the tail tip!)

Moomin! Does your nemesis visit your dreams (and are you a pompous Cabinet minister?)

Oh, my host was most gracious, and even took the time to attend to me personally. If he's going to host an open-house party to strangers, I don't see how he can expect to meet all of them in just one night...

llandb · 11/07/2011 00:02
  • ah, it is a rat - of the Aussie variety. (Hastens to add that rats of the Aussie variety are not necessarily world-famous humans, but can be cute and whiskery and have white tail-tips)
MoominMuggleandMy · 11/07/2011 00:21

Well, 14 years ago I imagine you didn't have a handy laptop to Google "Australian Water Rat" on. I didn't, and I expect I thought a Google was a cricket term! [hgrin]

And I haven't seen a European Water Rat or a Rakali so you are definitely one up.

Did you have to leave the party very suddenly? Problems with your outfit, perhaps?

...I'm not a Cabinet Minister. I only left school a few months ago. And I don't think I'm pompous. I don't want to sleep because of the nightmare I'm going to have...

llandb · 11/07/2011 00:39

Ha, well, 14 years ago when I saw a the rakali, I could have Googled it if I'd been in the habit, as I was on my way to do coal-face time at my privileged (in my view) 1/3-time share of a PC.

Ah, yes, well it wouldn't have done to have stayed past pumpkin time. I thought I was doing the right thing. But it turned out that he was most peeved and sent out a search party after me. I guess he didn't want my manky shoe lying around making the place untidy, and wanted to get me to take it back. And I can't believe all those wealthy trouts wanting my second-hand shoe; not even a complete pair!

MCP!

MoominMuggleandMy · 11/07/2011 00:51

Fraud - Ratty!

You mean because he's not really a rat? But what's a little confusion over parentage between friends.

Or the sneaking frog legs into his supposedly veggie diet? Any W-RLs could have told the Arvicola Amphibius, ahem, experts that Mole's pal wasn't veggie because of the cold chicken, cold tongue, cold ham, cold beef etc in the luncheon basket.

MoominMuggleandMy · 11/07/2011 01:00

He couldn't be bothered to get your name and address on the first date and is exhibiting a weird shoe fetish. I don't care how plushy his palace is, you need to pick up your skirts and leg it!

...I've had it once already. That's why I'm dreading it. I dreamed I'd been buried alive...

Night, llandb. So nice to be back.[hsmile]

llandb · 11/07/2011 02:28

'Night, Moomin - I'll try not to dream of yours [hshock]

And 'night, other WRLs!

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/07/2011 09:27

MOOOOOMIIIIN!

llandb, I was Fanny's cousin from Mansfield Park - can't actually remember her name now Blush

I've seen a real English water rat - he was paddling around in the Test just outside Winchester. Although he wasn't wearing a Norfolk jacket which threw me somewhat.

AIBU to use this ointment?

MoominMuggleandMy · 11/07/2011 11:21

Squeeee! Treacle! Oh happy day! Smile

Hmm, depends on the purpose of the ointment, I'd say. Flying? Eczema? MCP!

...I don't want to, but now I've got to take this nightmare to other people, including my poor aunt...

steamedtreaclesnape · 11/07/2011 11:41

...Well, I've rubbed this ointment on, and it's certainly made me feel a lot better - it seems to have some amazing properties...

No idea on yours I'm afraid Moomin, MCP?

This raft could do with a bit of a spring clean, I think.

MoominMuggleandMy · 11/07/2011 11:51

A case of being able to see more clearly? If so, you might regret it, Treacle.

...But someone has to let the world know how the Regulatory Body is punishing the convicts. It is so cruel....

CJCregg · 11/07/2011 12:58

Moomin! Treacle!

Hello!

As ever, I have absolutely no idea what anyone is talking about, but it's ever so nice to be back Grin

Grrrr at Mansfield Park

MoominMuggleandMy · 11/07/2011 13:23

CJ! Hooray! The clan of W-RLs really is gathering now. Smile

I really think we need something with a bit more fizz for a grand reunion of the dusty tottering pile hoarders.

...Poor aunt Grace. But I need to overdream a powerful dreamhunter to get the nightmare to a large audience and now my father's disappeared she's the only real choice...

StayingNearlyHeadlessNicksGirl · 11/07/2011 14:09

Helllooooo everyone!! I am so sorry I have been away for so long (I had a crisis of confidence about my lack of literary knowledge and my inability to keep up with you all, and slunk away to hide in other threads - but now I am back!!) It was the mention of home made lemon macaroons that tempted me in (they sound so delicious!).

AIBU to be jealous of the woman who is senior to me at work - she's so clever, fit, beautiful and she has a rich husband who helps her with the computer side of our work?

steamedtreaclesnape · 11/07/2011 14:37

...I seem to be looking much better too - in fact, I'm not sure I can even be bothered to put any clothes on before I go out. Now, where was that broomstick?

Moomin, were you trying to get to the Place?

MCP NicksGirl!

Something with fizz, eh? I'm sure I bunged a couple of things overboard to chill...

So... Pol Roger, Laurent-Perrier or Perrier-Jouet?
