AIBU Books Game Part Eight

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 16/11/2010 12:49

Post an AIBU from the point of view of a fictional character (from novels/nursery rhymes/plays etc) and everyone tries to guess the book and/or the character.

Everyone welcome to play/time-waste as much or as little as they please :)

AIBU to be protective of my DD?

Ah - actually, I had read one of his! I got it free from somewhere, obviously left a big impression on me Blush Will have to give him another go.

Hawksmoor is the only book of Peter Ackroyd's I've read and I did like it, although I found the total lack of resolution a little bit annoying. It would have made a stonkingly good supernatural murder mystery

Unrulysun · 22/02/2011 15:18

Well when I say 'recommend' I'd add the caveat of 'unless you want to read a proper book to read'. Personally I like to read real books for a while and then use a good trashy murder as a novel sorbet to allow my brain to rest. :)

Peter Ackroyd's another like Sebastian Faulks for me. Big words and pretentious characters strung loosely over a huge bloated ego. Yeuch.

No blimmin' hope of ever catching up on what you lot have been doing :( (but have noble plans to try :))

Ooh ooh new coffee smiley!! Brew.

Well, is coffee?
To me, brew is beer.
But generally I don't see it in a coffee mug emblazoned with what look suspiciously like a drug of a different kind.
Maybe it's a very special herbal tea!

'Night, all!

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/02/2011 10:30

Ooh, like the sound of that festival! Very springlike.

Yes, I thought the same about the coffee mug picture...

Unruly, I think you might have started something with that Bloomsbury comment earlier - looks like me and Elephants are moving in together! Grin

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/02/2011 11:01

It's true. I have no idea what's going on around here but hello llandb

I feel like one of us should become a housezilla now. Maybe I should implement a no-children policy in the house? Or start making an A and B list for the housewarming?

and AIBU to take this baby?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 25/02/2011 11:53

...are you taking the baby into the house?? If not, then go ahead I say. Was it just lying around?

What about a no cats between Tuesdays and Fridays rule? :o

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/02/2011 13:00

...It wasn't exactly lying around, but noone seemed to want it. I don't even like babies, really...

I was thinking that perhaps we could hold literary soirees and invite all the AIBU books threaders?

Angry about the no cats rule

Ah, didn't know about the feminist literary book club - will have to check that out! Just read Vilette for the first time last year - you're right, it's terribly sad.

Unrulysun · 25/02/2011 13:18

Is it the baby in Alice in Wonderland?

Unrulysun · 25/02/2011 13:23

Treacle I was more sad that they made me do a Bronte. I was holding out for that nice Ms Austen. They're not a laugh a minute les Brontes are they? I might hang myself if Villette's not a bit more cheerful < prepares to be sorely disappointed>

steamedtreaclesponge · 25/02/2011 15:32

...and I didn't even have anywhere to put it, so I had to take it home in a soup tureen. I don't know what my parents will say...

Are you not a Bronte fan, Unruly? I'm not really sure what I think about them myself, as I've only read a couple. I do love Jane Eyre but it is rather flawed from a feminist perspective. Just read that bit in Sexual Politics about Vilette and it's made me want to re-read it to see if I can pick up on what she was saying.

Pogleswood · 25/02/2011 18:22

Hello all!
Hi llandb, how's the booklet? (and the rest of you too,of course!)

I've downloaded Villette,it is another of those books I remember reading, but really can't remember much about - what I remember most is that I preferred The Professor, and Shirley.

Definately have literary soirees,Treacle and Elephants, such fun!But I shall bring my cat - then you can fight over who will clean up the vast clouds of cat hair...

You haven't been previously involved with some detectives, have you,Treacle?

Unrulysun · 28/02/2011 10:52

Oooooh what does it say in Sexual Politics Treacle?

< licks end of pencil, prepares to amaze feminist thread with incisive and wholly original analysis>

steamedtreaclesponge · 28/02/2011 11:49

It's online here

(on google books, p140, in case that link doesn't work!)

I think it's already been mentioned in the feminist literary books thread though... sorry if that spoils your plans for intellectual domination Grin

llandb · 05/03/2011 01:48

Oi Treacle and Elephants, don't you like living on the raft with the rest of us? (Boo at no cats! :o, and what about sheep?)

Hello back everyone! (Pogle, Booklet is even bigger and still chilled - at which rate he will turn into )

How's everyone, then? You all have the rotten 'orrible lurgey?

steamedtreaclesponge · 09/03/2011 14:36

Hello llandb! I have now come down with a new lurgy (stomach bug) so have been off all week Sad

Oh, there will definitely be cats at the soirees - I have two! Elephants is just winding me up Wink

Don't worry though, I will never desert the raft, although it's been a bit quiet here of late - where is everybody?

Perhaps I should start a new AIBU?

AIBU not to visit my family?

llandb · 09/03/2011 18:32

Elephants! Poor you. Have a bucket and some foul-tasting isotonic mix. And some catnip to keep the furries in a state of narcotic indifference to neglect.

I would say YANBU :o but it depends. Do they upset you?

llandb · 09/03/2011 19:25

D'oh. I meant, Treacle, poor you - and Elephants, you're terrible! But somehow I missed out whole chunks of sentences.

steamedtreaclesponge · 11/03/2011 11:46

...Oh no, I love all of them, even though I've only met them once. But since my cousin became ill I think it might be a bit too much work having me there...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 11/03/2011 11:57

Hello everybody! The raft lives on! I am still bookless or near bookless which is very sad.

Poor treacle. :( Too much trafalgar squaring?

OP posts:
steamedtreaclesponge · 11/03/2011 11:59

Yes, I am really missing my books. I do love my kindle but it's just not the same.

ah well, only a week until I will be reunited with my tottering dusty piles of tomes.

Yep, Elephants, all that feminist marching has evidently had a bad effect on my digestion...

llandb · 16/03/2011 15:40

Hmmm, are you into mixing your own herbal teas? If not, then MCP!

steamedtreaclesponge · 17/03/2011 09:48

...No, I don't drink herbal tea. But I think two cripples in the same house might be a bit much for my aunt...

Sorry to hear about the lurgy, llandb. I'm finally feeling better now, thank goodness.
