Staring tomorrow. Successfully did sober October last year and drank on November 1st and have done almost every day since.

Determined to make this my starting point again - anyone want to join here for mutual support?

Also any recommendations for podcasts to listen to for starting short bursts sober journeys welcome

Hi all. I had two small glasses of merlot with my dinner this evening- about a 1/4 of a bottle in total. Was really nice and had no desire for more.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 10:02

Hahah just checked the wine bottle and it was only 10.5%( DH bought it🤦🏼‍♀️) so no wonder I didn’t feel much effect. Tasted lovely though.

Thornrose · 11/11/2023 18:48

Well I thought fuck it, it's Friday, yesterday.

I bought a bottle of red and started off sipping slowly and savouring it.

After half a bottle I knew I should stop. But then I'd end up finishing the other half tomorrow. I couldn't face dumping it so...I drank it all.

Not as bad today as I expected but I've had a headache most of the day and felt a bit nauseous. So now I'm sitting here going "Oh I might as well have a drink tonight now"

I'm sorry I keep bringing the mood down but it's ridiculous! I'm ridiculous!

So back to just not drinking at all at home. It was easier and took up way less headspace than moderating.

Thornrose · 11/11/2023 18:50

And thanks for the support @PeacheyPeach and @43ontherocksporfavor I really appreciate your words.

You're both doing so well.

Ohtobehappy · 11/11/2023 20:31

Hi everyone. I am not doing so well. I have had a few af days but I seem to be back to my old ways mostly. Every time I think I am doing okay something happens and throws me back to that oh no well let's have wine to forget about it.
Well done to you all you are amazing x

InOtherWords · 11/11/2023 20:36

@Ohtobehappy I'm in a similar boat. But despite that I don't feel/accept that I've given up (well I do sometimes, but I haven't written this off yet).
Well done to everyone for any and all efforts.

Ohtobehappy · 11/11/2023 20:46

I think I decided last week that if I could do 3 AF days a week at least that would be a start. Did it last week and all set for this week then my daughter went through an awful time at work and I caved on Thursday night.
I wish I could deal with situations better. As if I am a good support to my daughter when drunk 😞
I hate being so weak

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/11/2023 00:48

Hey guys stop being so judgmental of yourselves. You’ve come so far and any AF day is a win. Don’t forget that. I’m just back from my black tie event and I had more drinks than expected. Several Proseccos and 2 G&Ts but with a meal and over 6 hrs. Feel fine and had lots of water in between. There is no quick fix but just reducing and moderating is a start .

43ontherocksporfavor · 12/11/2023 14:50

Feel quite tired and rough today. Enjoyed last night but will continue to be as AF as possible.

PeacheyPeach · 13/11/2023 21:27

Hey all , honestly we are all our own worst critics arnt we ! Think of how great we did last month, cutting back is hard to do especially with deeply ingrained habits, so even having one day less of now drinking is better than what we did before October!
I had two glasses of wine with my meal on Saturday, plus a nightcap when I came home and last night we had family over and I had a couple of glasses of wine again. It was fun and I enjoyed it, but I have woken up feeling slightly nauseous today! But I have no plans for the next few weekends so I know I will be AF now, I think this is the way forward for me, i enjoy having a drink, I don't enjoy the habit of drinking every night, so I'm trying to learn to keep to this moderate way of doing it

43ontherocksporfavor · 13/11/2023 23:08

Yep. I realised how much time I lost yesterday just because I felt tired and rough. I’ve been getting so much done when AF at weekends. I didn’t even enjoy the drinks that much!

PeacheyPeach · 14/11/2023 10:10

@43ontherocksporfavor I was the same yesterday and I also felt slightly anxious all day which I'm putting down to alcohol!
I still didn't drink anywhere near what I was drinking before but it just shows how it does affect you mentally and physically doesn't it.
I'm actually looking forward to a clear run now of no drinking for the next few weeks!!

Thornrose · 14/11/2023 17:50

I'm back on track. I drank Saturday as well as Friday but it reminded me how pointless home drinking is for me.

2 drinking days in 6 weeks is an amazing achievement and my liver must be rejoicing!

I don't plan on drinking until December now 😇

PeacheyPeach · 14/11/2023 21:15

@Thornrose that is a fantastic achievement 😀 yes it's nice having a couple when your out but I'm thinking the same that home drinking is just a bit depressing 😄 but does seem a good idea at the time!

Thornrose · 29/12/2023 23:05

Hey, anyone care to join me for a dry/damp January?

December I've been predictably off the wagon, which is cool.

I'd like to do another reset as I got a lot out of the last one.

43ontherocksporfavor · 29/12/2023 23:12

Hey @Thornrose yeah I’m in. Since October have been sticking to only weekends but has obviously been lots more over this festive season. Not sure how damp I want to be in Jan but feeling a bit bloated and rubbish so will be minimal beveragini uptake for me.

Thornrose · 29/12/2023 23:22

Yay @43ontherocksporfavor

Ohtobehappy · 30/12/2023 10:15

Oh yes I definitely feel like I want to join in. I know I won't do dry January as it's my husband's birthday in the new year and we always go away (5 days this time with friends so very boozy) but after that I need to make a concerted effort especially not to drink in the week. I have been so bad especially over the last few weeks and feel so bloated and my skin looks awful and my anxiety is through the roof. X

Thornrose · 30/12/2023 12:49

@Ohtobehappy my drinking went back to pre October levels by December!

I loved the 6 weeks AF on reflection and I think it will be easier this time round as i know I've done it before.

I can read through my own comments on the thread to remind myself how I felt.

One thing that astonished me was how clear and sparkling my eyes were. I want that back...

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/01/2024 18:06

Ok just finished the wine. No more booze until weekend and only if I really want one.

Thornrose · 01/01/2024 22:01

@43ontherocksporfavor I'm finishing off some red.

No alcohol at all for me this week to start with.

I've got some nice biscuits and a Christmas cake. They're gonna fuel my sugar cravings.

I know what to expect this time...

PeacheyPeach · 02/01/2024 19:03

Hi all
Lovely to hear from you all again !!!

I managed pretty well keeping to drinking only at the weekend bit last 10 days I've pretty much drank every night apart from a couple of days, so am ready for a rest!!
Starting today and trying not to drink this weekend also. I was going to do dry January but I'll see how I feel as I was enjoying actually moderating it made me feel like a grown up!!
