So after so many attempts of failing, I'm really hoping to succeed this time. Is anyone on day 1. I go through other posts nd read how well people are doing, but just can't seem to get past the first few days. The house is hectic nd I feel like by 5 o clock, I deserve to be opening a bottle of wine. I know I shouldn't nd would be feel so much better the next day if I can stop drinking. Just can't seem to crack it. Any tips on audio books that really worked? Other ideas? I think I've tried so many times I need to do something different. I know the first few weeks are going to b tough, any vitamins etc to give a boost. Any advice ? Help !!!

Day 1. I really want to succeed at this. Loving the group support and inspiration

Haggisfish3 · 12/04/2022 22:47

Day four done! Really wanted a glass of wine tonight but made an active choice not to have one.

brightspice · 13/04/2022 10:01

@enoughisenough100 How much do you usually drink?

Swarskid2184 · 13/04/2022 11:06

I was going to just pretend that I had never commented on this post and quietly disappear as I have drank every night this week so far…..only slight win was only 3/4 of a bottle on Monday night instead of 1…..

I ordered the Sober Diaries - which arrived this morning, so going to try a bath with a book and an early night tonight.

I have so many good intentions when I wake up every morning….but when it gets to 5.30-6ish, I just reach for the wine bottle!

So, I am going to keep on this chat and hope that hearing from the rest of you will help spur me on.

Hello! We also have a group going called Day1 if anyone wants to join. We stopped after Xmas. I'm on day 109 I think. Some have started and stopped again

enoughisenough100 · 13/04/2022 14:01

Well I did last night AF , can't say it was too easy though! I'm finding every evening a struggle! @brightspice , I've kinda always started with a couple of glasses of wine, shared with DH , but with a long time , we open a bottle and he only gets one glass out of it and a lot nights, he won't have any so usually end up drinking the bottle on those nights. Wine is my main struggle, I'm not big on beer or spirits! I just need a lifestyle change!!

If anyone has Disney, highly recommend single drunk female. It shows the emotions of sobriety well plus, it's very funny.

brightspice · 13/04/2022 17:31

@enoughisenough100 I always recommend to people that they make things as easy as possible for themselves - changing a habit is hard enough to start with! Therefore rather than going from pretty much a bottle on a reasonably regular basis (I'm paraphrasing your reply here!!) to nothing, why not decide instead you'll drink 3/4 of of a bottle the next time you drink... it's still less than you're drinking now (that's a win) and it's likely something you can do without too much of a struggle (another win). Then you can reduce as you see fit from there. This approach has you committing to yourself and building trust in your ability to follow through.

Haggisfish3 · 13/04/2022 22:38

Day five. Went for a walk at wine witch hour instead.

gingerhills · 14/04/2022 08:27

Thank you for starting this thread, OP. I had been feeling uneasy about drinking creeping up. I had AF beer two nights ago, sparkling water and juice yesterday and will have AF beer again tonight. I know i'll drink over Easter, but just seeing this thread is giving me a few days off and then after all the family celebrations, I'll come back and keep going.

I did Dry Jan and felt a lot more energised and productive, though the sweet tooth was shocking. I was eating sugary sweets every night with a real craving and normally I don't eat sweets at all. Does anyone have advice on how to get past that?

That's very impressive. 109 days!
enoughisenough100 · 14/04/2022 10:16

@Rupertpenrysmistress , must definitely check out that film!
@brightspice , that is a great idea, while I did last night AF again, going over Easter weekend could be tough, so will take your advice, drinking less than that my normal amount is a win as you say! So if I do crack over this weekend, I would b hoping to just have 2 glasses or so. (Easier said than done, I know) but I'll set my mind to that. Thanks .
Well done @Haggisfish3 on getting past the witch hour!
@gingerhills well done too, i know wat u mean about sweet things though , if I don't have a glass of wine in my hand, you will be looking for something else!

Day 6 done! In bed reading my book, with my herbal tea 🍵

Good luck over the Easter weekend everyone 💪

Haggisfish3 · 15/04/2022 08:40

Well done! I slipped up last night but back on the sober bus today. I’m glad it was last night and not tonight I slipped. I’ll feel great tomorrow!!

wakeupandshakeup · 15/04/2022 08:56

Reset button for me! I'm back to keep myself accountable. I'm having a really tough time with stbxh and f'it attitude inside me is strong for a glass of wine come 6pm!! I absolutely have to stop 🙈 today I will remind myself yet again why I don't drink and the benefits of not drinking..

enoughisenough100 · 15/04/2022 09:57

Back to Day one for me!! Stressful evening and I gave in. I think I really do use it as a way to calm me down wen I'm stressed. But you wake up more anxious so really end up going around in circles ! Any ideas on wat to replace it with when feeling stressed.

@enoughisenough100 the herbal teas are working well for me, and kind of quenches that need for some thing sweet aswell. I've made it quite a ritual, picking out a tea to suit the mood I'm in and really savouring it, the warmth of the cup, the smell of the tea, how it tastes and the feel of it going down. And knowing it's doing me good, and I can have as many as I like without the hangover! And at anytime of the day 🙂🫖☕

SmellyWellyWoo · 15/04/2022 19:52

Day six today and my first real challenge. I don't normally drink during the week but today is Good Friday and we went out for a family meal. I usually always have a bottle of wine or some cocktails. Had soft drinks instead. Wasn't too bad and I know I'll sleep so much better tonight and feel so much better in the morning.

VanLife · 17/04/2022 19:46

Back to day one for me 😑

@SmellyWellyWoo how did you find not drinking in a group when out? Was there any peer pressure or people questioning why you weren't drinking? Did you still have a good time? Did the people still drinking annoy you as they got more tipsy and you were sober?

I'm going out with friends in a few week time and I am worrying about all these things and hoping I don't buckle, or want to leave early. I want to be able to enjoy meeting friends out without relying on alcohol for it to be fun .. I just worry I'll feel self conscious being sober when everyone else is drinking... X

SmellyWellyWoo · 18/04/2022 22:14

I was only out with my DP who doesn't actually drink (and can be very sanctimonious about it) so can't help I'm afraid. The trigger for me is simply going out for a meal.

Dottedskull · 20/04/2022 19:26

Hi all, I've been in denial that I could moderate my drinking.
Things have spiralled again.
My mental health is really really paying the price and I truly am sick of this cycle I've been in for years.
Day 1 AF for me today. Still in a really depressed state so not feeling very motivated/enthusiastic about this long road ahead. Just taking the next few days as they come.
Looking forward to reading your tips and having this thread to support each other over the coming weeks and months!

@wakeupandshakeup

Life is so much clearer wine free so I don't know why I do it to myself
I can relate. I don’t know why I drink so often … I’ve been drinking a lot of wine alone lately so I can’t blame others. Day 1 for me today

wakeupandshakeup · 25/04/2022 09:29

I'm back.. after falling off yet again. I've been sitting up all hours drinking wine watch the Jonny Depp court case 🙈 life has been complicated and the wine consumption is to block it it. God knows why because it actually just makes it all worse. I'm back in here to keep myself accountable. I was doing so well.. annoying!!

brightspice · 25/04/2022 10:09

From 26-28 April at 6pm UK time I'm presenting a short 'Drink Less with Ease' workshop: why we drink (day 1), how to manage urges (day 2) and how to make it sustainable (day 3). Details at 90dayslater.co/workshop

Each session will last approx 45 mins. It's totally free.

Today alcohol is utterly irrelevant to me. I don't spend any time thinking about it. I help people achieve this for themselves and am running this free workshop to make these tools available to more people. Share with friends.

DM me if you have questions.
