New thread for those of us attempting Dry January.

Thanks @ERN79 good luck to you. I am a home drinker but the improvement in my anxiety levels is a major incentive to keep going. I'd just got almost used to feeling quite anxious a lot of the time and it is much better since I cut right back. I've tried before but my mind really seems to be making the connection this time and it's just not worth feeling so rubbish if I overdo the alcohol.

Floydthebarber · 10/02/2022 10:09

I forgot a pill the other day and had to get the morning after pill as the stars had aligned and dh and I had some time in the house by ourselves. Not even that made me pick up a bottle of wine!

Tomorrow I think dh and I will have a some beers and something lovely to eat after the dc have gone to bed. Dh starts work at 7 so its a really good reason to just enjoy a couple of beers.

Dulsesunset I have never made the connection properly between alcohol and anxiety until recently. I'm hoping reducing how much I drink so much will also help with my depression long term.

wurlycurly · 10/02/2022 21:51

Arghh terrible night here. I really fancied a glass of wine but didn't have one. DH just came home hammered. He started drinking at lunchtime. This stuff makes me really anxious. He's just really rude to me. And now I'm bedded down on the sofa for the night because he's snoring. How do people make this work if their partner drinks? Hope everyone else is having a happier evening.

Hohofortherobbers · 10/02/2022 23:16

I did it! I went out and there were cocktails and beers and I had...... Drumroll..... A 0% lager. Very pleased with myself. Smile

Hohofortherobbers · 11/02/2022 06:55

@wurlycurly, I'm sorry your message hadn't appeared when I posted last night, sorry you've been ousted from your bed! I expect you're going to still have a far better night's sleep than him though.
Is anyone else finding they get messages appearing hours after they have been posted? It's making me very late to our party!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 11/02/2022 07:17

DH is off today so he had wine last night. I still didn't fancy it. I loved seeing my Try Dry app saying 40 days. The weekends are far tougher though at the moment I'm staying strong.

Sorry you ended up on the sofa @wurlycurly - hope you at least got some sleep.

@wurlycurly it took dh at about 14 years into our relationship to really acknowledge that he can be completely awful to me when he gets home hammered. Hope you managed to get a good run of sleep anyway. And enjoy today without a hangover!

H1Drangea · 11/02/2022 12:36

@wurlycurly I hope you managed to get a decent amount of sleep

Going out for dinner tonight , I’m driving
DH will probably have a glass of red with his steak , I don’t like steak anyway and will have a posh lemonade or AF koppaberg and may have a glass of white when we get home
Don’t know yet , and am not going to waste time trying to decide , will put the wine in the fridge and decide later

wurlycurly · 11/02/2022 19:56

Thanks for the messages of sober support. My Fitbit says I had an excellent night's sleep but what my Fitbit doesn't realise is that I twisted my back at 5am. My job involves lifting and bending and it has been a looooong day. My DH is contrite but this is a recurring pattern 🙄 Still, peace reigns tonight. Enjoy your Friday nights

H1Drangea · 11/02/2022 21:54

Been out for dinner , lovely meal and much cheaper than normal as no bottle of wine to pay for !
Had a Becks Blue to drink ( as it’s been recommended here ) very nice it was too ( and the same price as a rose lemonade , which I often have )
I did have a small glass of white wine when I got home … not as nice as I remember and I’m back now on the lime soda
Luckily for me @wurlycurly DH is cutting back too , so at least we’re on the same page ,

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 11/02/2022 22:38

Day 41 for me today. The longest I managed last year was 45. Just not fancying it at all this year so am confident of lasting longer this year.

SantaMonicaPier · 11/02/2022 23:30

Hope you have a better sleep wurlycurly.

Have managed to resist tonight and we have no less than 23 bottles of wine in the house (I counted from curiousity!) which are currently not tempting me particularly. I consider every dry day a gift.

drybird · 12/02/2022 17:16

Day 42, I step away from the group a while back but continued my Dry Jan and went on with it .. I hope you are all doing OK? It's now a fleeting thought rather than a strong urge to drink - for me anyway! I now realise however moderating is not for me, after listening to podcasts it's evident that I'm an all or nothing drinker so I'm officially off the sauce. ☺️ the changes in my appearance have been quite significant and I'm far less bloated and puffy. Not sure about weight because I didn't dare step on the scales in the beginning 🙈 has any one seen any weight loss? I think once Feb is out the way wine free I'll focus a little more on weight loss! Happy weekend all x

guineapigs · 12/02/2022 17:53

I had a glass of white wine. I am not a wine drinker but we had a bottle of my favourite wine and dh fancied some wine too. I am happy that I managed to stay dry this long and my plan never was to quit drinking.

Now it's just not to drink during the week. I don't usually binge drink so it's just having wine/beer with weekend dinners.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 12/02/2022 20:30

I don't think I can moderate either. I'm feeling dead chuffed today. I ran a 5k parkrun in under 40 minutes. My previous PB (on my very first 5k) was 43 minutes.

SantaMonicaPier · 12/02/2022 22:03

Well done Ghast!!

JaquiRussell · 13/02/2022 08:22

Day 44, doing OK am enjoying finding AF alternatives like Belle & Co Prosecco.
Well done on the running that's amazing!! I had lost 8lbs as we headed into February, but it has stopped now so I think I need to start moving more.

H1Drangea · 13/02/2022 08:45

I can run for 10 minutes now @MyGhastIsFlabbered I’ve done the C25k before , know I CAN do 5k and my ambition is to do a Parkrun ..one day

Moderation has gone very well this week , my started bottle of wine is still in the fridge with wine still in there for tonight
I don’t think I can do it every weekend and will stick alcohol free next weekend
Lost no more weight , I think I’ve replaced alcohol with chocolate!
Ooops

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 13/02/2022 10:29

@H1Drangea I did C25K 3 times before I actually finished it. I was going great the first time until I broke my foot!

I am a bit evangelical about running these days - never saw the point of running for years - now I go on and on about it!

My advice would be to just go to a parkrun and do it. When I finished C25K though I could run for 30 minutes I was nowhere near 5k in that time. I felt really disheartened and lost my confidence. I decided this year I was going to do parkrun no matter what. I hadn't run for months but just thought I'd go and see how I got on - if I didn't run the whole thing it didn't matter. But I went and just kept going - it wasn't fast but I did run the whole thing. And the buzz I got from knowing I can jog 5k was unbelievable. I still get it now. It's a massive achievement to me.

Anyway, lecture over. Happy Sunday everyone. I'm currently sat with a purring cat on my lap, a snoring dog next to me and I'm trying to pretend I haven't finished my cup of tea so I don't have to do chores!

More dry days. And dd1 has a sickness bug! She has never been sicky, even when she was a baby so it's always a surprise to her and us when she is. We don't 'do' valentines day but usually see it as a reason for a bottle of wine. An ill child is another good reason for an alcohol free day!

H1Drangea · 14/02/2022 20:59

@MyGhastIsFlabbered my DSis is my running buddy , we have decided to do a parkrun when the weather is a little better ( not raining would help ! and she has a week off ( starts work 8 am Saturday , which is bad timing ! )

Back on the sparking water tonight and feeling fine about it ( and the chocolate… again , not buying any more )

@Floydthebarber hope DD is better soon. And keeps her nasty germs to herself 🤢

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 14/02/2022 21:57

I've had the ultimate bitch of a day. My manager is just a lying cow and I'm actually going to have to get the union involved it's so bad. Plus she told me something very personal about the health of another employee which I think is shocking. I don't know if it's common knowledge but I certainly didn't know and now I'm worried what she'll be telling others about me.

OP posts:
H1Drangea · 15/02/2022 21:25

Hope fully you had a better day today @MyGhastIsFlabbered

I had a dentist appt ( nice to have that back as a routine ) check up and hygienist , and discovered …. I have a wisdom tooth coming through , I have had a nagging ache , nothing bad though
Only thing is , I’m 61 !
I shouldn’t be teething

Another day alcohol free 👍

guineapigs · 16/02/2022 12:37

My nearby Tesco now has AF Corona. I haven't been drinking during the week but tomorrow is dh's birthday and I think we have a bottle of bubbly. Then it's back to AF corona.

Shortkiwi · 16/02/2022 20:00

Haven’t been on here for a while. 39 days AF out of 40. I’m very pleased with that, never lasted this long before. I had a planned glass of champagne on Valentine’s evening, enjoyed it but was happy to get back to being AF last night. Got my big birthday weekend away with my family in 8 days. Do not want it to be booze fuelled as far as I’m concerned. I’ve really got to envisage the fun I can have without getting sloshed.
