New thread for those of us attempting Dry January.

Oh Ghast you do have my sympathy. DD2 has gone down with it officially today - friends all around testing positive in droves so it was only a matter of time. She's feeling a bit shit but not majorly ill. DD1 thinks she has it too and is testing. They're both away at uni and I haven't been around them for weeks, so I'm not a contact, but I reckon it will get me in the end. We're all vaxxed and boostered so should be OK.

NorthernChinchilla · 02/02/2022 18:45

Colleague and I were discussing yesterday the fact that our eldests were both complaining that they didn't have COVID so had to go to school... Hmm

Can't believe there was a pile on with the moderating thread, that's ridiculous! I outlined my rules to DH this eve, he seemed happy with the just Saturdays and occasions, so I'll see how I go!

H1Drangea · 02/02/2022 19:27

Just back from IKEA , I think I’ve spent all the money I had saved on wine !
Ooops 😀

wurlycurly · 02/02/2022 19:32

What did you get? I love an IKEA haul

guineapigs · 02/02/2022 19:56

Tonight I am going to have boozy chocolates. Not sure if they contain alcohol because there is no mention of it on the packaging.
I went to pub lunch today and had AF beer.

I might have alcohol on Saturday with roast dinner.

FrugalFrancine · 02/02/2022 20:00

Was there a pile on with the moderating thread Confused? Maybe I was looking at a different one, but it looked to me like people just weren't interested in it 🤷‍♀️. It was hardly a pile on

NorthernChinchilla · 02/02/2022 20:08

Ooh yes, homeware haul, tell! I'm lurking on loads of design threads and sites, having a good lust for the house we haven't got a date for cos the vendors are hopeless

wurlycurly · 02/02/2022 20:22

With the moderation thread, the first message was asking why you would drink at all, the second message basically said moderation didn't work (called rules 'all that shite). They were just really negative. It's got more measured now more people have posted on the thread. It's just not kind for the first messages to be so combatative.

FrugalFrancine · 02/02/2022 20:27

I think you'll always get people on the Alcohol Support board who think any alcohol at all is a bad idea. I think it's personal choice.

I actually think if that thread had appeared elsewhere on the site, like maybe Chat or General Health, they'd have got better responses. This board seems to be more about totally AF in my experience.

There used to be another thread in Relationships I think, which was Brave Babes Battle Bus or something. That was a mix of moderators, people still drinking and struggling with it and then also people who were totally AF. It worked fine. No idea why it was in Relationships though 🤔. But it was a lovely thread.

H1Drangea · 02/02/2022 20:43

I bought …
2 pairs of curtains ( I need to cover an old sofa , and this will give me over 9 metres of fabric for £34 )
I’ll do a before and after photo
Door mats
Cushion covers
Rugs for main bedroom
Plastic storage boxes for the ensuite
2 planters for indoor plants
2 pots full of succulents
Children’s cutlery
All for £136
And we had lunch ( gravadlax , tomato and mozzarella salad ) and went back for coffee and cake
A good day out

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/02/2022 21:14

Oooh I love IKEA! Shame the closest one is miles away from us. I really need a Billy bookcase

OP posts:
wurlycurly · 02/02/2022 21:36

I agree @FrugalFrancine. It must be irking for abstainers that some people can and do succeed in moderating. I understand that hasn't worked for them personally, and I'm in no way assuming ultimately it will work for me.
There's an IKEA opening in Hammersmith...an easy reach for me! I'll be there scooping up the storage solutions

Onewildandpreciouslife · 03/02/2022 06:29

Woohoo! I did my first ever sober pub quiz!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/02/2022 07:35

@wurlycurly I'm not irked that other people can moderate, I'm annoyed with myself that I can't. I start off with good intentions and then it all starts to slip and before I know it I'm getting through a bottle of wine every night.

OP posts:
wurlycurly · 03/02/2022 07:41

Sorry I meant 'some abstainers'

Floydthebarber · 03/02/2022 08:58

Clear covid test! If Itake one early enough tomorrow I might be able to make it into the office! Outside! That usually would have meant some celebratory beers later. But now that doesn't appeal at all.

I am so glad I joined this thread and dry jan. Thank you ghast for starting it.

H1Drangea · 03/02/2022 09:28

Our nearest IKEA is about 60 miles away , quite proud that we only got lost once on the way home
I think I left the cushion covers in the back of my sisters car , now that I’ve taken the old covers off and the house is filled with bits of old feathers and dust ( eeeeuw )

Well done on the pub quiz @Onewildandpreciouslife was it in … an actual pub ?
I tried a AF koppaberg at the weekend , it was much nicer than I expected , a bit too sweet for me though

I looked in my local Tesco for the Fevertree apricot and grape soda , they didn’t have it , I bought the Italian blood orange and Mexican lime to try over the weekend
I know I’m not ready to moderate yet , I read somewhere it takes 90 days to change a habit , so just need to keep going a bit longer

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/02/2022 09:33

I've had a negative test today too. But I don't want to go back to work tomorrow so I'm a bit disappointed bizarrely

OP posts:
Onewildandpreciouslife · 03/02/2022 10:04

@H1Drangea yes! I went down the pub a few times in January but not to a quiz night with drinking buddies. Missed the drink a bit, but felt good this morning

IJustLovePirates · 03/02/2022 19:24

@MyGhastIsFlabbered

I've had a negative test today too. But I don't want to go back to work tomorrow so I'm a bit disappointed bizarrely
Totally understand this.In the very early days of Covid I had a respiratory infection. I was told by GP not to go to work until I was symptom free…for three days! I wasn’t gutted :) Glad you’re Covid free though.

Well done @Onewildandpreciouslife on the pub. I haven’t even tried to do that yet. Did you win the quiz? 😀

SantaMonicaPier · 04/02/2022 06:49

I went out last night and had a couple of drinks. I can't say how much I regretted it. It took two hours to get to sleep and I feel meh and demotivated this morning. I think my reaction is exacerbated as I haven't drunk in so long but I think I'm back on the wagon for a while at least

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 04/02/2022 08:17

Morning ladies. Second negative test for me. My son can test today so I'm hoping if he gets a negative and one tomorrow he can come home for his birthday.

Big test tonight. DH has a bottle of wine - it's red so I won't be tempted to have any, but it would be very easy to say I'll join him and get some white in. At the moment I'm not tempted but this evening will be the difficult part.

OP posts:
FrugalFrancine · 04/02/2022 09:37

@SantaMonicaPier, that's similar to me last weekend. I decided to end my dry Jan a bit early (I'd planned this as I didn't want to end it on a week night Blush). Anyway, I soon realised it was a mistake and it's made me pretty set on being AF instead of moderating, for the time being at least

FrugalFrancine · 04/02/2022 09:38

Also, I've found this time round, the first week of not drinking hasn't affected me badly at all. The start of January I just felt extremely tired. This time I feel totally fine

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 04/02/2022 09:40

I feel SO much better going dry this time around. Last time I spent most of January bemoaning why I was giving up alcohol. This time I feel great and am dreading being tempted again
