New thread for those of us attempting Dry January.

I didn't drink during the week. This was my plan and I am not sure if I am having alcohol tomorrow. A glass of wine with dinner. I am not a wine drinker but I think Dh would like to have some wine after DJ.

pointythings · 04/02/2022 18:27

I am feeling extremely tired but that is for valid work weeks from hell type reasons.

H1Drangea · 04/02/2022 20:36

Home alone and on the lime and soda
What’s happened to me !
I’m feeling so positive still.
Thanks everyone for the chat , I’m planning on keeping going as long as … I don’t know really .. possible … as I want to .. forever … til I go on holiday … who knows

FrugalFrancine · 04/02/2022 21:08

@MyGhastIsFlabbered

I feel SO much better going dry this time around. Last time I spent most of January bemoaning why I was giving up alcohol. This time I feel great and am dreading being tempted again
Exactly the same^^. In January, I don't know what it was, but I got some bad headaches a few weeks in. They were waking me up in the night and everything. I was indignant! The audacity of headaches when I'd been so Halo by not drinking. I so nearly caved the next evening after the first one and drank out of spite 🤣. (Yes, I am clearly broken).

Now it doesn't feel like I'm "being good", it's more like "why would I ever 'treat' myself with something that would make me feel worse because I already feel bad"? Feels like a little break through anyway.

@H1Drangea cheers!m . Also on the lime and soda and damned delicious it is. Dh also bought me a curry. I'm saving ATM so it was nice of him to treat me out of his own spending money budget

Floydthebarber · 04/02/2022 22:28

FrugalFrancine yes! Dh and I are sharing a bottle of wine. Just one (usually it is three!) because feeling crappy in the morning won't be a treat.

It's actually a wine from new years that's sat in the kitchen, unopened.

Onewildandpreciouslife · 05/02/2022 07:07

So yesterday I drank. A couple of glasses of wine out for lunch and 3 glasses of wine in the evening. I was feeling pretty sorry for myself - I had a minor op on Thursday and I was in quite a bit of pain, and I’m not allowed to run for a week or go to the gym for 2 weeks, so my usual distraction isn’t available.

The main thing I noticed is how bad my favourite wine tastes now! The bitterness of the alcohol was really obvious. I slept ok, but could definitely feel the jitteriness of having drunk.

My overall conclusion was that it was pretty pointless, so I’ve reset my goal to stay dry until half term and will take it from there.

I hope no one minds me setting out my thoughts here - this isn’t a criticism of anyone who’s trying a different path! Have a good weekend all

OnthePiste · 05/02/2022 07:30

I feel the same about wine. I bought my favourite bottle of red this week and cracked it open last night. It was all I could do to finish a glass, it tasted so sour!

pointythings · 05/02/2022 09:42

I had my favourite red last night and thoroughly enjoyed it, feel fine this morning. Back to the normal routine, hey-ho.

Now to find a way to stop my kids beating me at Wordle!

H1Drangea · 05/02/2022 10:31

I have Just done my wordle for today , 4th word , and I’m on a 13 in a row winning streak
@pointythings sadly DH won’t play ( because he knows I’d win )

FrugalFrancine · 05/02/2022 10:41

I've just done my first ever Wordle! Dh beat me though Hmm. He's a right clever clogs AND he had a few Wines last night. Is there any justice?! Wink

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 05/02/2022 12:11

Oooh we're on Wordle too. DH is sulking because he didn't get it yesterday. I'm normally 4 words, fluked it in 3 once. Today was 5

DS1 has been at his dad's all week because of COVID. It's his birthday today and HE'S COMING HOME!!! I didn't think I'd get to see him in his birthday and so I'm overexcited. I've just iced his birthday cake. He's 12 and still my little boy but growing up too fast Sad

OP posts:
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 05/02/2022 17:01

So I'm struggling a bit today. It's Saturday, we're over COVID and I would like a drink. Not just a drink - I would like to get pleasantly sloshed. I keep telling myself it's not worth it and I'll regret it, but this is honestly the first whisper of the wine witch so far. I knew I'd had it too easy so far.

OP posts:
guineapigs · 05/02/2022 17:04

No alcohol for me today. We had to change our dinner in a last minute so to something which won't go with wine. I am just having AF beer instead.

FrugalFrancine · 05/02/2022 17:15

So difficult @MyGhastIsFlabbered. Like you, I do not want to have a small glass of wine. I want three or four large ones and ideally a couple more tomorrow please Grin. It doesn't take a genius to know, this is a bad idea.

Sometimes having a hard and fast no booze rule is easier!

Can I give you a good reason not to get pleasantly sloshed? Probably. You could just Google "why shouldn't I drink alcohol" or something. But it's so personal. At the end of the day, you can only choose what you think works.

H1Drangea · 05/02/2022 18:31

@MyGhastIsFlabbered , I know what you mean , and I know I’m the same
One glass will lead to another , so I’ve decided none at all is the easiest way for me
Have a big glass of water , then at least you won’t be thirsty any more

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 06/02/2022 09:12

Well last night was...different. DS1 projectile vomited all over the bathroom...honestly the floor was swimming in it. The door was covered, honestly I've never seen so much. I cleaned it up and looking back I'm amazed - the thought of 'needing' a drink to get through it or rewarding myself with one for having done it never crossed my mind.

But I'm annoyed as I ate far too much this week and put loads of weight on Angry

OP posts:
FrugalFrancine · 06/02/2022 09:18

Oh no @MyGhastIsFlabbered! Yes, we've had a similar bug in our house this week. It came and went quickly though, so fingers crossed it will be the same for you.

You have not put on weight over one weekend! It isn't possible to gain lbs of fat in a short space of time and will only be water weight. Don't sweat the food! You have have eat. You do not have to drink.

There endeth my lesson Wink

FrugalFrancine · 06/02/2022 09:20

(It also isn't possible to lose lbs of fat in a short space of time, which is a bummer, but makes sense)

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 06/02/2022 09:36

DS is fine today - I think he had too much birthday cake yesterday Hmm
But he's only 12 - wasn't expected self-induced birthday vomiting for a few more years!

DH is in a foul mood this morning and I'm feeling rather sick and tired of it.

OP posts:
FrugalFrancine · 06/02/2022 09:45

It's really weird - I can see you've posted something on here when I look at Threads I'm On, but when I click on the thread your post isn't there ghast...spooky! Or else my phone has gone bananas.

FrugalFrancine · 06/02/2022 09:46

Oh there we go, sorry!

Oh how annoying about your dh. They can be grumpy sods. Has he got a reason or just grumping around?

guineapigs · 06/02/2022 18:55

Day 37. Yesterday I didn't drink because we didn't have cold beer and dh didn't feel like drinking after Friday when he had beer and cocktails. Today again Dh didn't fancy any alcohol and I didn't want to drink alone.
I am not going to drink during the week so next Saturday I probably will have some beers or wine.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 06/02/2022 19:30

Interestingly DH had wine this weekend and he's been in a pretty shit mood all day today, I didn't drink and I feel great (despite his grumps). Went for a 5k run this afternoon, got lots of chores done and don't feel even the slightest bit interested in alcohol. DH asked me earlier if I wanted any and I didn't even think for a second about saying yes. I think getting in the mindset of not drinking really helps...someone upthread or on the last thread said about how much time is wasted thinking about whether to drink or not...much easier just to decide not to. But that's just my opinion and I'm not judging anyone who's successfully (or unsuccessfully) moderating.

OP posts:
H1Drangea · 06/02/2022 20:24

I did think about having a glass of wine this weekend , but thought that if I opened a bottle I’d drink it all and that would be stupid , did contemplate buying a couple of single serve bottles , but just bought some more sparkling water
Weather has been awful here , so just did cleaning and laundry and made a nice roast dinner for the two of us
Another Sunday ticked off ✅
