Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I'm in! Did 9 weeks last year.

VivaDixie · 01/01/2021 21:25

I haven't read the thread but am joining you all. I am fed up of draining a wine bottle then waking up feeling like shit. I have downloaded the dry January app and retired to bed with Jasmine Tea and a good book.

Like Youngatheart said, I am looking forward to looking after my body and feeling freaher

OhioOhioOhio · 01/01/2021 21:32

Pp that's exactly how I feel

funnyoldonion · 01/01/2021 21:32

I would like to join in please, I did Dry January last year and most of February but then Covid happened and a good friend took his own life in October and I have been a little out of control since then. Actually really looking forward to not drinking and waking up feeling bad

ApolloandDaphne · 01/01/2021 21:45

First day done. I only hope I can manage to sleep tonight without a few wines to knock me out.

mommybear1 · 01/01/2021 21:46

I'm in. Day 1 done ✅ I need to get a grip as lockdown has meant I am drinking far far more than I should or would like!

foofooyeah · 01/01/2021 21:51

I’m joining in. Put any alcohol out in the garage. Need to improve sleeping and lose weight. I don’t drink as much as I used to but want to prove to myself I can do without.

ADMum20 · 01/01/2021 22:33

I ended up sorting out 3 drawers 🤣🤣🤣

Day 1 hasn’t been too bad... but I’m completely determined to get on top of this in 2021. It has been years since I had more than 1 night running off alcohol and I’ve developed a really unhealthy relationship with it.

I quit smoking a few years back and so know I can quit bad habits. Just this one seems harder...I already know I’m ‘all or nothing’... I simply can’t drink at weekends only (and I’m given to understand that’s not a better drinking pattern health wise anyway).

Never drinking again feels unimaginable. Which tells its own story really, doesn’t it? Anyway....

Day 1 ✔️

For anyone looking for replacements I've been enjoying the Sparklingly Sober range that you can get in some Co-ops and Lidl.

Very grown up soft drinks, I particularly enjoy the Nomosa it's really got a spicy ginger kick. They also do a blackcurrent one and one I think is rhubarb based.

teelizzy · 02/01/2021 00:37

Hi can I join? 1 Jan was day 1 for me after a very boozy year.

I'm alcohol dependent and have been for years. I get away with it because I never lose control in terms of passing out, blacking out or vomiting or riotous behaviour. I just consistently drink a lot more than is good for me. I'm also not really properly present for my family. I'm ashamed of how undisciplined I am in this area of my life when I'm not in other areas.

Here's to day 2!

NorthernLights77 · 02/01/2021 06:50

@AgnesNaismith Jigsaws! I’ve been bored out of my mind lately with reduced working hours, half the time that’s why I reach for the wine I think. I joined the jigsaw thread over on Chat and started yesterday, ‘lost’ a couple of hours concentrating on a Jaws jigsaw puzzle!

SantaMonicaPier · 02/01/2021 08:43

Got up feeling brilliant after day 1! Peaceful sleep and woke at 7 rather than the 9 when I've been drinking over the holidays so far

Ticketybooboo · 02/01/2021 09:26

Slept very well as not getting up miltiple times to pee, but do have a thumper of a headache. Have bought the book Chrissy Teigen spoke about- Holly Whitaker’s “Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed With Alcohol.” Previously had the Jason Vale book but just couldn't get in to it. Big yes re jigsaw puzzles- a great distraction. The app was an eye opener- was heading for 90-100 units a week to my utter shame.

MoonBaby1 · 02/01/2021 09:48

Morning everyone, how’s the first sober morning going?

I’m one of the heavier (60+ units per week) drinkers on this thread so it’s been great to wake up with a clear head.

Less great to clean up my DJ’s red wine vomit all over the bathroom.

TSBelliot · 02/01/2021 09:54

I am a 60 prob 80+ drinker but have never found it bothers my sleep or getting up. The lack of consequence is one of my false comforters. Am too fat though so am focussing on getting thinner and fitter and exercising when I would normally sit and drink.

bluerad · 02/01/2021 10:00

Anyone tried the Gordon's alcohol free gin being advertised on tv?

Darker · 02/01/2021 10:07

Never drinking again feels unimaginable.

You can hold complete abstention in your thoughts as a possible/eventual goal/outcome but for today all you have to think about is today.

You can review your longer term goals when you are ready, when you have got used to not drinking and are not distracted by the effort involved in changing ingrained habits.

FoxandFeathers · 02/01/2021 10:09

I weighed myself and am up 1.5 pounds. I suspect it is because I am not dehydrated like usual. Slept ok, once I managed to drop off.

MoonBaby1 · 02/01/2021 10:13

@TSBelliot it sounds like we’re similar. I’m drinking huge amounts but I’m up early every morning and capable.

I do feel ill though and I’ve become fat. I really want to lose a couple of stone and look like me again.

VivaDixie · 02/01/2021 10:14

Day 1 done and I had a great sleep.

I bought some 0 alcohol Leffe for me and DH the other day so will give that a try if I fancy a 'drink'. Otherwise my go to is Tesco Low Alcohol sparkling drink which I call pretend prosecco (

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 02/01/2021 10:27

Urgh judgement swift and terrible for me this morning, after finishing off the wine last night. Woke with a thumping head, nausea and the sweats. Only now starting to feel even vaguely human. So really looking forward to a fresh feeling month.

Well done to everyone who managed day 1 yesterday. We can do this Thanks

Similar indeed Moonbaby.
I have a middle shaped in a guineapig style -am hoping that goes and I feel more bendy and bouncy. Am heading towards fifty so the next bad news might be that it’s not eve the booze making me stiff and old.

VivaDixie · 02/01/2021 10:35

No judgement here. Today is a new day. This time tomorrow you will feel fresher Smile
Darker · 02/01/2021 10:38

Ugh, moonbaby. Can’t he clear it up himself?

MoonBaby1 · 02/01/2021 10:38

Haha! I’m 36 and very round on the middle now. It’s a mixture of vanity and a real fear of my health deteriorating that’s got me doing this a a start. The idea of continuing after January is inconceivable at the moment. I’m obviously dependent.

@MyGhastIsFlabbered it’s brilliant that you haven’t just gone ‘fuck this’. Best of luck for the fresh start Flowers
