Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I've tried to do dry January for the past few years and frankly made feeble attempts before caving in by day 3. I don't know what's different this year but Thankyou all for being in this thread. I check in morning and evening and it really helps knowing that we are helping each other. Thanks

Hi, lurker here. Am on 5 out of 10 days dry as cracked the first day back at work (working from home). But back on the DJ wagon as better than drinking close to a bottle of wine most nights with only 2-3 days off per month. Here to recommend Thomson and Scott's noughty prosecco - not cheap c. £9 on Amazon or direct from the suppliers. Can "subscribe" and get cheaper. It's a dealcoholised Chardonnay and imo is just like a slightly weaker version of prosecco, not sweet like a lot of wines. I honestly don't think I'd know if it was handed to me. Tried it in the summer and have just ordered a couple more. Also like Heineken zero and me and DH regularly drink it outside of DJ.

MintyCedric · 10/01/2021 11:09

I felt much less bloated on getting up this morning. Am fortunate that when I make any kind of effort with my diet it hits my stomach/waistline first (the less said about the size of my arse the better).

Anyway, did an early 2 hour country walk with best mate and a huge flask of coffee and didn't get arrested now goingnto do poached eggs on toast for brunch, and really looking forward to a wintery dinner and a glass or two or AF merlot this evening.

Allycat · 10/01/2021 11:42

Omg my blood pressure has really dropped. They were talking about putting me on medication for it, as it was so high, but hopefully no need to now 👏👏👏

iwantavuvezela · 10/01/2021 12:07

Hi everyone - day 8 here for me ..... lost just under 2 pounds which is good as that’s the only thing I’ve changed is alcohol consumption.
Woke up with a banging headache which was annoying .....
Looking forward to getting into double numbers - this will also be my first alcohol free weekend in years!

theDudesmummy · 10/01/2021 12:35

Another tip for online drinks is that ginger ale in a tall glass with ice and a straw (with or without AF gin or other types of AF "spirits") really looks like a "real" drink in a way that no-one seems to question at all. I would guess that ginger ale in a beer glass would also, over the screen, look identical to lager...

LittleBeee · 10/01/2021 12:58

Hi everyone... is it ok if I join? I’ve been lurking on the thread and though while I’m waaay behind all of you, I’m picking up DJ from here on in. One day under my belt so far, which is a huge achievement for me, given I don’t normally manage many AF days normally! I’m definitely in for the rest of Jan and my aim is to keep going, with a view to only having a glass or two when out for special occasions (lol might be a while!) I’m a classic ‘de-stress at the end of the day’ wine drinker and it’s crept up over the years. Not proud of myself. So holding myself accountable here and to be inspired by you amazing peeps! I want my health back, to lose weight and to save money 😊

Els1e · 10/01/2021 14:47

Welcome LittleBeee. Climb aboard our wagon. Plenty of room for more.

LittleBeee · 10/01/2021 16:09

Thanks for the welcome! 😊

Blessex · 10/01/2021 16:19

Welcome @LittleBeee!!! So have just been on a food shop and stocked up. I bought the new Gordon’s 0% gin. Haven’t tried yet but a friend said is really a good copy. So will check back in later ;-). Also I love Guinness and so picked up this AF stout in Waitrose. I have just sipped some and it is really a great copy. So any stout or Guinness lovers out there - I recommend this. Also got a couple of wine copies - don’t usually like any of those but will report back. I was looking for the Noughty Prosecco recommended up thread but it had sold out. Right that’s the next few days sorted!

Really struggling today. Have eaten way more sugary things than normal ( and stupidly baked a tray of flapjacks packed with syrup and brown sugar).
Went to shop and bought a Brew Dog Nanny State and a Kopperberg AF cider in desperation. The BrewDog is revolting. Too bitter for me. Will update on the cider. Need to get over this wobble!

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/01/2021 16:30

Hi all. Headache has gone now but facing a roast dinner with no wine. I'm missing wine a lot, I'm not gonna lie, but that tells me I NEED to do this. I ordered a load of clothes from the Next sale which arrived today so looking forward to trying them on later (once DP has finished watching the footie Hmm)

Blessex · 10/01/2021 16:39

@dementedma keep going!!! I think I tried the Brew Dog a while back and didn’t like it. I find lagers better. But as just said this new stout is amazing - but it is bitter so you probably won’t like. Let us know how the cider is!!!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 16:39

@MyGhastIsFlabbered ufff it’s the wine. And I haven’t found a decent alt :-(

CandyLeBonBon · 10/01/2021 16:50

I'm doing a roast without wine today too @MyGhastIsFlabbered - I shall raise a glass of 0% something to you. You've got this.

Glad the headache had gone

Livpool · 10/01/2021 17:01

I am really proud of myself for not drinking at the weekend. I usually look forward to a weekend drink. I did want one yesterday but it passed so I am feeling positive

Humphriescushion · 10/01/2021 17:04

Oh love trying on new clothes, is so long since i have bought anything, hope feeling less wobbly now and same for demented! Is hard but keep going! Is soo bloody cold I am having horlicks, is very comforting and feels like a treat. Weekend nearly done alcohol free and does feel good.

TSBelliot · 10/01/2021 17:24

Having failed to take my pulse before I started I have today and came out at 62 both times. I can’t remember it being below 70 ever really!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 17:37

Ok am having a zero Gordon’s gin and tonic as I start cooking dinner. So I can definitely taste the difference. There always seems to be this kind of sweetness that they can’t get rid of. AF wine too (which is why I was so impressed with the stout - zero fake sweetness). But it’s definitely got a gin feel to it. And that’s good enough for me!

Sometimes123 · 10/01/2021 17:37

Blessex, could you let us know what the Gordons is like? I am doing ok with tonic, lime and ice; but thought it'd be nice to 'mix it up' a little

Sometimes123 · 10/01/2021 17:40

We posted at the same time Grin

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/01/2021 17:41

I can't work out if AF wine/gin would help or make things worse for me. Tempted by the nosecco though.

OP posts:
Blessex · 10/01/2021 17:42

@Sometimes123 ha crossed post. Yes I need a lot of variety or I will cave. So as said it is good but does have this weird sweet taste that also happens with AF wine for me. But it is the most gin like alcohol free I have tasted. I am needing good wine recos. I have got eisberg and natura in the fridge for the week....

goldpendant · 10/01/2021 17:42

Nearly a whole weekend! Well done us!

I've just poured the last of the pink peppercorn and pomelo tonic, this is the closest I've come to something resembling a g and t, really good.

Got the itch tonight, I'm cooking, feeling a bit bored/pottering around. I'm definitely one that needs distractions!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 17:43

@MyGhastIsFlabbered yep is interesting isn’t it. Like having a vegetarian sausage!!! I find it definitely works for me. An AF cold lager sometimes hits the spot. And that stout - definitely getting some more of those in.
