Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

Waking to day 8 didn't sleep too well I think work plays on my mind then I convince myself I need to go to the loo.... Friday is my niggle time always have a drink to end the week and start the weekend so need to be careful this evening 🙀

SantaMonicaPier · 08/01/2021 08:47

I've been dry for 7 days, longest in at least 5 years. But even though I wasn't a massively heavy drinker before I feel awful, I've had a headache since yesterday and am wondering if it's something else as withdrawal surely shouldn't be affecting me now.

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 08/01/2021 08:55

Hi all
Can I join? I’m on day 7 too but have really wanted a glass of wine for the last couple of nights and now it’s Friday... give me some ways of avoiding it tonight other tff he sn going to bed at 4.30 thus afternoon?Grin

SantaMonicaPier · 08/01/2021 08:58

Welcome! I've been drinking alcohol free wine, its actually OK!

showmethegin · 08/01/2021 09:27

I am so sorry @DefNotDeadYet Please don't think you're detailing the thread! This is what it is for, support. Take care of yourself x

OhioOhioOhio · 08/01/2021 09:28

Day 7 and I really do think that my face looks different. Smaller even. I've not been waking at 3 am. I'm trying to train myself that wine isn't a treat and associate it with all the side affects. I do realise though, more than ever, my biggest reason for wine is that it's a lazy past time. It's such an easy way to while a way an evening. That's my biggest reason for it.

showmethegin · 08/01/2021 09:28

Hi @Ifeelmuchlessfat I had a definite wobble a couple of days ago, I had a nice warm bath and watched something on tv that really engrossed me and I wrote a list of the reasons I'm doing dry jan, seemed to help refocus me!

SwiftyFifty · 08/01/2021 09:47

@OhioOhioOhio omg that is so true and it’s always been my “ hobby” one thst I truly enjoyed and excelled at! Now I feel a bit silly...

OompapaOompapa · 08/01/2021 09:49

Has anyone found themselves having crazy dreams since starting dry jan?

MeAndHimAndHer · 08/01/2021 10:07

Morning please can I join?
I’ve managed 8 dry days (started on 30/12) which is the longest I have gone without wine in a good few years. Prior to this DJ I was drinking at least a bottle of wine every single night apart from when I do occasional night shifts.
I haven’t found it too hard which has amazed me!
Extremely vivid dreams every night and I have such a dry mouth, so thirsty all the time. I’ve not noticed any physical benefits yet but am definitely less grumpy with dd.
I’m hitting the Pepsi max hard, need to try to drink more water or at least sf juice.
I think I’ll get back into crocheting and try to finish the blanket I started 6 years ago!

flygirl767 · 08/01/2021 11:02

@DefNotDeadYet so sorry for your loss. Losing my sister was the start of my regular drinking, it is so easy to try and block the pain with alcohol.

Has anyone found any alcohol free drinks that taste good? I had an M&S AF botanical G&T last night, oh my goodness not for me it made me shudder everytime I sipped it! The Gordons pink grapefruit G&T was mush better but does have a minuscule amount of alcohol content in it. Never found an AF wine that doesn't taste like sour grapes! Koppeburg cider was nice but just tasted like pop and extremely sweet. Any recommendations appreciated!

ApolloandDaphne · 08/01/2021 11:34

That's a week now! That's the longest I have gone without alcohol in a very long time. I feel very pleased. And last night I slept very soundly which means I feel great today.

TeaRose29 · 08/01/2021 11:57

@CandyLeBonBon - so sorry to hear about your brother Flowers.

@Tazers - thank you for sharing. I'm very impressed that you have been able to moderate your drinking to just one day a week. I don't drink as much as you used to - I probably have 2-3 glasses of wine 5-6 nights a week, so say 30-40 units - still way over the recommendations Blush and I've been pondering on what to do at the end of DJ. I don't really want to go teetotal as I love having a bottle glass of wine when out for a meal or at the pub, but I don't really trust myself to be able to moderate, I've tried before and it's just a slippery slope back to drinking most nights. Anyway, we are only a week in! I'll take stock at the end. Grin.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/01/2021 12:03

Yeah. I don't want to be tee total either. I just want to almost never drink.

Ifeelmuchlessfat · 08/01/2021 12:24

@showmethegin yes! A bath! Excellent idea...

PeacheyPeach · 08/01/2021 12:29

@Defnotdeadyet I'm really sorry to hear about your dad please take care xx

This is day 8 for me, still struggling to fall asleep but made myself wake up really early this morning so I'm hoping I'm going to fall into bed tonight and go to sleep 😴
Feeling a lot more productive I have to be honest though. Last night I was moving around my furniture so now feel like I've got a new living room and have woke up very achy. Going to a zoom cheese and wine party tonight so it will be a large fancy glass of tonic with ice and no cheese as I'm dieting 😂

PeacheyPeach · 08/01/2021 12:32

@OhioOhioOhio

Yeah. I don't want to be tee total either. I just want to almost never drink.
This is me. I want to go out for a meal and have one glass of wine and not feel like I need to buy a bottle from the shop on the way home!
supercee · 08/01/2021 12:34

@PeacheyPeach That's me in spades!

CleverCatty · 08/01/2021 12:35

New to this post. Didn't drink much in December and have hardly drunk much during January either - maybe one G&T and that's that.

I'm at the pre-menopausal stage where alcohol can really seem to affect me which is strange as a year ago it certainly didn't - not to this extent!

My DF was an alcoholic for many years (now dead, at 50) and DStepDad was a functioning alcoholic for many years (never said of course!) who's now teetotal and one of those annoying people who'll bang on about how alcohol is awful! Hmm.

My grandad (mum's DF) was also I think moreorless functionining alcoholic though never said - he and his wife (stepgrandma) could get through a bottle of wine easily during the day and then he went to the pub most evenings for a few pints. Because he was 'European' (French/German) it was seen as acceptable.

Me - I've never liked the wine o'clock nor drinking in the evenings but have drunk a lot and to excess in the past - wine, cocktails etc. Never enough to want to give it up but certainly have done silly things in past when drunk.

MintyCedric · 08/01/2021 12:35

@flygirl767 hello

My mum bought me some alcohol free G & T - Gordon's I think...I tried to like it but it was vile.

I'm only on day 4 and can almost hear my wine rack shouting at me but thinking of the weight side of things and hearing people on here say its made a different to their face is helping keep me on the straight and narrow. I have a really underactive thyroid so am not doing myself any favours on the drinking front.

Have my infuser bottle arriving today.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/01/2021 13:09

I'm not a fan of the fake alcohol choices. It confuses my mind set which I think is what I need to change most of all. I'm very overweight so the alcohol doesn't help. More than anything I realise how much time I waste because I schedule drinking into my life. Its stupid really.

MrsMiaWallis · 08/01/2021 15:07

I refuse to pay £25 for an alcohol free spirit. I'm doing ok on decaff coffee/oat milk and Robinsons lemon squash so far.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 08/01/2021 15:35

Hello and welcome to the new joiners! Step on up!

@CandyLeBonBon so sorry about your brother. Are you ok?

Please, nobody worry about derailing the thread by talking about non-DJ things. This thread is for support of anything and everything...as far as we're able anyway!

Feeling surprisingly ok about an AF weekend. I think I'd got into a habit of wine on Friday night and breaking the habit is bothering me more than the lack of wine itself if that makes sense? But really looking forward to not waking up feeling like shit. No kids tomorrow morning so looking forward to a nice lie in.

Still replacing alcohol with sugar but I can work on that at a later date. One thing at a time.

someone posted this on my FB page the other day and I don't see what the point is in it!

It's a bit like Seedlip - a herbal 'non-alcoholic' drink...

Having said that - I have had the wine which is half wine and half fruit juice and a friend of mine who needs to cut down alcohol for medical reasons does like the low sugar Jack Daniels tins and low alcohol beer etc.

For me - it's why you drink is the reason.

I've got friends and relatives who drink at home in the evening to 'wind down' or with a meal - etc - I've not really been a fan of this so it's not hard for me to stop.

I have liked a drink after work though.

I've got an fairly underactive medicated thyroid too so know what you mean.
