Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I tried Seedlip - seems to me to be the Emperor's New Clothes in a bottle. Doesn't really taste of anything (maybe grass? Confused ) and by the time you've added tonic, well you might as well just have tonic and save yourself £25!!

You're right about the Seedlip and 'grass'!

Finishing work for the week now. No booze in the house and working from home, so no need to drive past anywhere that sells booze (a good side effect of lockdown 😀). Friday tends to be my worst day for craving a glass or two - don't know if it's social conditioning (years of Friday post work drinks) or physical, or perhaps a bit of both.

My strategy (along with having no booze in the house) is to keep busy. Tonight we have a few chores to do before dinner. Dinner is a home made curry from the freezer. Then we will plan a family walk for tomorrow. We're part way through Line Of Duty and really enjoying it, so we will watch some more of that later once DD has gone to bed. I have enough rhubarb and ginger cordial for the night.

I also don't see the appeal of AF beers, wines, nosecco etc. I think they're expensive for what they are and they just remind me what I'm missing.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/01/2021 16:09

That's exactly it Dugee. For me it's a bit like, 'this is what you could have won.' I'm hoping to use January to reset. Might do a dry month more often.

theDudesmummy · 08/01/2021 16:17

I don't really like or see much point in the AF gins etc, which are supposedly mimicking tge real thing. I do seem to like Three Spirit, it tastes like itself, not like any particular liquor, and it's nice and not sweet...

ApolloandDaphne · 08/01/2021 16:58

I would so love to be opening a bottle of wine right now. We still have plenty in the garage. I must resist.

OhioOhioOhio · 08/01/2021 17:21

I'm thinking about how many more jobs I'll get done without the distraction of alcohol.

Humphriescushion · 08/01/2021 17:48

Craving a bit this evening, just had new worktops finally installed after a month with planks of wood and would love a glass of wine in my new kitchen! Going to have a glass of sparkly water and jazz it up with something.

Also going to slap on some facecream after a long bath and picture a healthier face and body!

CoronaIsWatching · 08/01/2021 17:53

Well this is it, the witching hour. I logged off my work laptop, went for a walk in the snow, now I'm sipping on a Becks Blue. This is the first time I'm really missing alcohol since Jan started, but I know from Sunday it will be better again until next Friday

supercee · 08/01/2021 18:05

I'm also having a couple of becks blue as I cooked a curry. Only drink beer with a curry or on holiday beside a pool. 39 calls a bottle! Did I read that right?! Hence why I'm having two.

Hohofortherobbers · 08/01/2021 18:07

Ha, I'm on the becks blue right now too!

SantaMonicaPier · 08/01/2021 18:07

For me the AF options are stopping me from cracking open the real thing! Personally I would struggle a lot more without a glass of AF to hand tonight and tomorrow. There's an AF gin on Ocado which gets good reviews so I'm trying that next week

Youngatheart00 · 08/01/2021 18:14

I’ve got a can of seedlip and tonic. It’s ok but not more-ish.

I’ve had a really stressful day, it’s Friday and I really need something to take the edge off 😫 I’ll be having a very early night I think

ApolloandDaphne · 08/01/2021 18:20

I took out a bottle of wine and looked at it for a while. Then I sighed, put it away and poured myself and elderflower cordial and soda.

showmethegin · 08/01/2021 18:23

@ApolloandDaphne You are my hero!

Dugee · 08/01/2021 18:25

@OhioOhioOhio

I do Dry July and OcSober. For me, dry months are a good reset, as I find I drink less after a dry month. But it gradually starts creeping up again.

MoonBaby1 · 08/01/2021 18:35

Just checking in on day 8 to say well done and stay strong everyone!

Friday means nothing to me really as I was averaging somewhere between 7-10 units every night Sad. Very happy to be AF tonight.

I am leaving the thread. I want a glass of wine with my dinner. I’m having it. Good luck to the rest of you!

You don't have to leave. You can stay and do moderate drinking. We won't sling you out and rescind your membership!
Humphriescushion · 08/01/2021 18:56

Yes stay, and just do whatever you can. No judgement here.Flowers

TessApricot · 08/01/2021 18:59

You are both very kind! 😊

Linus33 · 08/01/2021 19:01

Can I still join? Late to the party but have stayed dry #day8. Feeling the need for a support thread for the first weekend.

Secretsquirrelsbuddy · 08/01/2021 19:05

Another day nearly done. I am not doing dry january it just feels too much. I did start it which is why I am here. But this is day 6 out of 7 I have stayed dry.

Don’t leave we are all in this together and it’s a very supportive group

CandyLeBonBon · 08/01/2021 19:12

I'm really struggling tonight. My eldest (nearly 19) has ASD and is clinically depressed and on medication. He's like Eyore at the best of times but lockdown has rendered him even more irritable, rigid and morose than normal.

I am a single parent of 3. Their father has been absent for a large part of last year, citing Covid rules (apparently at their ages, seeing their other parent isn't allowed - 12, 15 and 18) so I'm pretty on my own with it. My daughter is struggling with some toxic friendships, I'm trying to keep everyone motivated whilst working 2 jobs and my eldest has just had a go at me for saying something to my daughter about her toxic friends, that he found triggering and I literally have no more capacity to be everything for everybody. I'm constantly the bottom of my pile. I work so hard to keep everyone buoyant and I'm so sick of being told it's not right/enough/thoughtful enough etc,

I so want a bottle of wine right now. Please talk me down.

Sorry for the rant.

You can do that. There's no pressure either way!
