Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

@CandyLeBonBon I completely get what you mean - feeling a bit tipsy adds a bit of fun to life! Also adds some shape to the day, which is especially helpful if you’re home all day.

I agree with whoever said the alcohol free beers are really good. I buy the bottled Heineken’s and add a slice of lime and it feels like a real treat. I also really love Sheppy’s alcohol free cider - it’s delicious.

supercee · 05/01/2021 19:34

@TessApricot Is the Heineken one nicer than Beck's blue? I forgot I actually like the Beck's blue (and it's low in calories) so will get that in for a healthy weekend curry for when the initial resolve wears off.

TessApricot · 05/01/2021 19:37

I drank a lot of becks blue when pregnant and do like it but I think I prefer the Heineken! @supercee

wizzbangfizz · 05/01/2021 19:37

I drink the pukka night time tea and the chamomile vanilla and honey 🍯

wizzbangfizz · 05/01/2021 19:40

Also I think everyone I know slept badly last night worrying about things!

MrsMiaWallis · 05/01/2021 19:41

Day 3 done! Just had a small bar of chocolate

I'm completely addicted to the grey Oatly oat milk and so keep drinking decaf instant with Oatly. Not sure how good that is - I'm drinking about 8 cups a day!

Youngatheart00 · 05/01/2021 19:45

Having a tough day today. Wfh all day and wanted to drag my bones out for a walk but it was so dark, cold and grim I couldn’t face it and got in bed for a nap. Now I’m up and about again and the evenings seem pointless without a glass in hand. It’s the first day things feel ‘normal’ (read monotonous and dull) for about a month given the run up to Xmas

TessApricot · 05/01/2021 20:07

@Youngatheart00 sorry you’re having a tough day. Is there something else you can treat yourself with?

MoonBaby1 · 05/01/2021 20:17

What is everyone else drinking in the evenings? I only want answers from people who are sleeping really well grin

I’ve been taking promethazine but want to wean off it. It properly knocks you out though!

Posh squash with sparkling water - I like elderflower and M&S rhubarb and ginger

Herbal tea - lemon and ginger or camomile.

I drink peppermint tea and water all afternoon as I only have 2 cups of caffeine per day - 1 large, strong coffee in the morning and a cup of tea either about 11 or after lunch.

SwiftyFifty · 05/01/2021 20:33

I can’t stop eating! Never eaten so much in a day. Ever!

OhioOhioOhio · 05/01/2021 20:44

This is my first day of actually feeling the benefit of not drinking or even thinking that I would. Weird.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/01/2021 20:46

Day 3 completed. So far so easy, I’m sure a week in will be a test though.

Youngatheart00 · 05/01/2021 20:56

@TessApricot I had some chocolate covered marshmallows. They were supposed to be a ‘light’ snack...but of course I ate the whole sharing bag! Feeling a bit better for it though. To bed now

bert3400 · 05/01/2021 20:58

Day 5 here. It's the time between 6-7 that I really struggle with . Once I'm past that it doesn't bother me at all. I'm drinking just squash but might look into getting something a bit more exciting or mixing it with fizzy water .

TSBelliot · 05/01/2021 21:03

Me neither swiftlyfifty. I was buttering left over jacket potato skins earlier! Actually I was slicing cold butter like it was cheese. Then there were the crackers and crisps and meals. Carb, salt and fat - I am meant to be losing weight.

PeacheyPeach · 05/01/2021 21:04

I have just had a long soak in the bath with a book as I find this is the time of night when I always have a drink - so filling this time now is essential for me, I find watching tv in bed instead of downstairs takes away the need to have a glass of wine also as I can't be bothered going up and down the stairs to get a drink!!

alannabanana81 · 05/01/2021 21:06

I am! it's my first time. far too much wine last lockdown. looking forward to being a brighter eyed mum, being more productive and less grumpy, better skin...and losing a few pounds. I'm using the trydry app

iwantavuvezela · 05/01/2021 21:13

Also sleeping badly - taken up a daily online exercise challenge - hoping that will help me to sleep at night.

Might try some chamomile tea (usually not a great fan of herbal teas, but would love a really good nights sleep)

Day 3 for me

wizzbangfizz · 05/01/2021 21:16

@SwiftyFifty I was the same first 3 days, now I'm doing 16:8 with some success although getting sugar pangs/headaches

Youngatheart00 · 05/01/2021 21:29

The Teapigs Calm tea is really nice - recommend that one. It’s got valerian root in which is supposed to be calming.

JacktomyDaniel · 05/01/2021 21:35

Day 5 and I am so jittery and craving a bottle of wine.
I'm sure it's mostly the thought of knowing that husband is back tomorrow to work and I have two under fives and need to be teaching year 3 while entertaining them and teaching one of them.
I'm scared. I always use alcohol when I'm feel like this.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 05/01/2021 21:56

Evening everyone. First time I've sat down properly all day. Am proper knackered. Not a great day here, DP isn't being so 'D' threatened to move out. He's really struggling with lockdown but there's only so much I can take. Normally we'd resolve our differences with wine but not tonight. Feeling virtuous but no real reason to - I'm practically mainlining sugar! I'm giving myself until after the weekend to get used to being AF then I'll tackle the sugar issue...one thing at a time.

Not feeling any benefit from being AF yet - but do feel strangely committed to seeing this through.

After catching up with the posts on this thread (such inspiration here), I tick the ‘Stayed dry’ on the app about 5ish, this then keeps me on the straight and narrow whilst cooking. End of day 5 ladies. Whoop whoop!
Thinking about getting some AF lager for the weekend, just in case.
Here’s to day 6 🤞🤞

theDudesmummy · 05/01/2021 22:20

I had reason for a celebration tonight, of a type/degree that would normally see me having some champagne. DH offered to bring champagne, which I declined (I love champagne). I drank instead sparkling grape juice mixed with Three Spirit Livener, in a champagne glass. Very nice indeed and to be recommended. Later had some Valerian drops in a glass of water and am off to bed. First time trying the Valerian, will see if it helps the sleep...
