Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

myghast sorry you’re going through a rough patch. Things are less than harmonious here too. My dh doesn’t take lockdown well.

waitingfor40 · 05/01/2021 22:44

Late joining but 5 days dry now GrinI'm adamant I will Complete jan and hopefully longer

HoxtonBonnet · 05/01/2021 22:46

@theDudesmummy - would be very interested to hear how you get on with the. Valerian drops!

WhiskersPete · 05/01/2021 22:51

Evening everyone and we'll done so far. Signing off day 5 and feeling really quite good. Enjoying having a clear head.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/01/2021 23:03

Ooh @theDudesmummy I've got some of that three spirits stuff - it's nice with fever tree tonic and ice!
Sorry your dp is being an arse @MyGhastIsFlabbered - I'm struggling a bit today too - just feels like bloody ground hog day.

But no wine. Which is a goddamned miracle frankly!

Well done everyone x

teelizzy · 05/01/2021 23:04

Day 2 done! First day back at work, structured my day and got some overdue admin done. Slight nudge from the wine witch which I ignored and then forgot about.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/01/2021 23:06

The Wine Witch

I LOVE that!

teelizzy · 05/01/2021 23:22

@CandyLeBonBon not my invention - think I picked it up on the DRY support thread that ran for a few years. Will look for it and link it if I can.

I visualise her a bit like the Wicked Witch of the West - sinuous and cackly - telling you it doesn't matter, who cares etc etc etc.

This article is very much the perspective of someone who's in recovery. But very helpful whether you're looking to moderate, reset or go AF altogether.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/01/2021 23:32

Thankyou @teelizzy - that's very helpful

@TSBelliot

Me neither swiftlyfifty. I was buttering left over jacket potato skins earlier! Actually I was slicing cold butter like it was cheese. Then there were the crackers and crisps and meals. Carb, salt and fat - I am meant to be losing weight.
OMG I love buttered crispy potato skins...I thought I was the only one who sneaks back into the kitchen like a ninja to add more butter and scoff any leftovers.

First day of dry January for me as shitty start to the year and leftover wine as a result.

All good...in bed early with my coconut green tea.

Haggisfish · 05/01/2021 23:50

Ooooh I just got some coconut green tea-I love it! I had two iced Tesco buns tonight but NO WINE!! Sorry for people going through a rough time. I’m lucky that dh is doing it with me-I’d really struggle if there was wine in the house.

mimblefish · 06/01/2021 00:05

Late to the thread but I'm on day 5, surprisingly I haven't missed it at all even though I was drinking a worrying amount throughout the latter part of last year. Today we tried no-alcohol Merlot (Tesco's own) and it's amazing how much it tastes like proper wine -- actually I think I like it better!

For me it's very much the habit of having a glass of wine that I miss, because I never drank enough to get drunk, so I'm feeling optimistic about the success of this experiment.

Trying2021 · 06/01/2021 05:57

Good morning everyone! Another day completed and I have woken up feeling fresh. Slept really well and didn’t wake at all in the night. Am currently trying to eat a little bit healthier but not putting the pressure on myself as staying AF is the main aim at the mo. I’m also doing some light yoga as well as a big walk every day. I’m doing the yoga after finishing work for the day as I find that is my time to think about having “just a glass of G & T” which normally turns into half a bottle! I tell myself to think about the G&T after exercising but then find doing the exercise seems to take the craving away. Long may it last! Keep going everyone!

10littlepirates · 06/01/2021 06:47

I had a long bath and read my book yesterday evening for the first time in a long time last night (instead of sitting on the sofa drinking wine). So relaxing. For now, school closure has made me more determined to carry on. We are only one day in to home school though! 5 days in to DJ!

NorthernLights77 · 06/01/2021 07:00

Morning everyone, Day 6 today! Been a while since I’ve gone this long and is usually the time I start to get really twitchy. Don’t know about anyone else but I feel exhausted, low grade headache and aches and pains in various places thankfully I’ve been sleeping ok, yet somehow don’t feel particularly rested!? Does anyone know when one really feels the benefit of not drinking? A week, 2 weeks, more?
Period is due so to be honest feeling crappy is more than likely to be down to that!

Els1e · 06/01/2021 07:00

Morning everyone. Checking in for day 3, take 2. Like OP, I am craving sugar. I seem to think I’m doing everyone a favour by clearing the house of post Christmas chocolates and mince pies. I want to get a week done AF, then look at what I’m eating. Can’t cope with everything at once.

flygirl767 · 06/01/2021 07:02

Morning, day 6 for me and I can't believe I have not had a drink-last time I was AF this long was when I was pregnant 14 years ago! Struggled yesterday evening for the first time, felt really jittery and nearly caved at 7ish. Poured myself an elderflower tonic water with ice and lemon which did the job. I also find Bottle Green ginger and lemon cordial really takes away the desire for a drink for me.

I hadn't planned on doing DJ, however my alcohol consumption has gone up a lot over the last year due to various stresses plus lockdown. AF days have gone from 3/4 a week to 1 if I'm lucky. I'm sleeping so much better already and a lot less anxious. Keep going everyone, I know the weekend will be hard for a lot of us but we can support each other here.

AuntieMarys · 06/01/2021 07:07

Yes day 6 and all is good. There is no sugary food in the house...I made dh take leftover Xmas cake, mince pies etc to work. I'm certainly sleeping better. Scales arrive today, so it will be interesting to see if I've lost any weight.....

TSBelliot · 06/01/2021 07:25

Mintycedric - ever buttered a crisp;)yum!

OhioOhioOhio · 06/01/2021 07:57

Pp apparently on day 10 we get to feel awesome.

NearWildHeaven · 06/01/2021 08:01

@OhioOhioOhio

Pp apparently on day 10 we get to feel awesome.
Can't wait for this! I'll be sitting waiting for the awesomeness to kick in at midnight Grin
Dugee · 06/01/2021 08:13

I also find Bottle Green ginger and lemon cordial really takes away the desire for a drink for me.

Another one who finds ginger helps, I'm starting to wonder if there is a scientific reason for this.

goldpendant · 06/01/2021 08:17

Well done everyone, we're into day 6!

I'm waking up with headaches, anyone else? Sleep is okay (taking a bit longer to get off) but seems to be a decent sleep when it comes, just waking with all over headache!

I too need to assess diet next week. Eating all the chocs up to get rid of them and to reward myself a bit for staying AF.

Skin looks better though and I feel a bit less bloated in the face already. Bring on day 10!

wizzbangfizz · 06/01/2021 08:25

Morning everyone! Still having vivid dreams - also is anyone else experiencing constipation Blush. My skin looks marginally better but I'm horrifically bloated.
