Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

My school mums WhatsApp group was awash wine wine time memes after 8pm last night and pics of what booze they’d just ordered. It’s so ingrained but I have to remind myself that for them it’s a treat, for me it’s a dependance.

AgnesNaismith · 05/01/2021 11:46

But is it a treat if the reason is emotional? I’m not sure!

FoxandFeathers · 05/01/2021 12:30

I’m glad I’m not the only one in disbelief I’ve made it to day 5. Those who haven’t- keep trying and you will get there.
Scales have frozen, I definitely looked less rough when I looked in the mirror this morning though!

PeacheyPeach · 05/01/2021 12:47

Hi all
Day 5 here and we have started the home schooling 😉 I did a mini workout before ( in my pjs sweating not a good look!) Was so wound up yesterday thought it wwas withdrawel symptons but arrival of totm this morn is probably the reason why as I'm feeling a lot calmer , still struggling to fall asleep even though im shattered ! Instagram and family members all talking about turning to the gin/wine and without sounding like a smug so and so i really dont want it and feel so much better for not having that desire to crack open a bottle!!
Will see how I feel in the middle of week 2 of teaching the kids though 🤣

@supercee

Morning all, day 3 and feeling better already despite neighbour's toddler blasting the recorder at 8am (is 8am too early to play a recorder?!).

Feeling better already and started Fast 800 and IF. Not going to weigh myself for a bit I think as I'll know by my clothes when the Christmas chub comes off then take it from there. My birthday at the end of the month but seriously thinking of not drinking, or having Nosecco. Has anyone tried this?

Like many others I really have no off switch, at all. 1 glass turns into a bottle and a half and one night turns into a weekend which turns into not being able to get back on the wagon for weeks. I don't want to risk it as I've given myself a goal by end of March weight wise.

Thoughts to everyone back at work today.

Hi supercee, I could have written this (apart from the bit about the toddler with the recorder Grin ).

My birthday is on 29th but I’m also thinking about swerving it as I really want my Dry January badge (even though I’m not six Blush ). Like you I don’t have an off switch and I’m considering doing Sober Spring, but I’ll decide at the end of DJ.

I love Nosecco - it’s not too sweet and I find it a bit lemony. I also like the Rawsons Retreat sparkling AF which is the least sweet and lowest calorie fizz I’ve found.

I’m enjoying the freedom from the endless alcohol chat in my brain: shall I drink tonight, how much, go on have another one, blah blah blah, and feeling lethargic and anxious the next day.

Howshouldibehave · 05/01/2021 13:03

Day 5 here-pleased with myself but am actually sleeping appallingly and feel terrible in the mornings. Not quite sure why and hoping it will end soon?!

I think I had drunk so often last year over lockdown-I was actually starting to feel a bit tender under my ribs-I presume that was my liver actively complaining. How awful-Blush.

SilverRing · 05/01/2021 13:07

I also had the uncmfortable feeling under my right ribs, and on having an abdominal scan (for something unrelated) incidentally found that I have a fatty liver. The doc advised me to lose weight and cut down on fatty food etc, but he does not know the true level of my drinking and therefore that it is likely to be mostly alcohol related (although I am also rather overweight). This was a bit of a wakeup call, although I did not stop drinking immediately (or even cut down much) it has factored into my planninmg the Dry Jan.

The good news is that the fatty liver can repair itself.

supercee · 05/01/2021 14:19

@TeaRose29 Yep, we are bad drinking twins! Can totally relate to the buzzy brain chat. I'm the same - should I drink, shall I pop over to the shop (a new one has just opened along the road from me which is dangerous), just finish the bottle. It's actually a battle!

I've given myself a spring goal and I know myself and tried it many times before, a day off is never a day off. It's lockdown now anyway so it's not as if I can meet anyone.

Day 4. My sleep is still rubbish and I have the little aches which is probably my liver trying to detox Confused

HoxtonBonnet · 05/01/2021 14:43

@dementedma I am very sorry for your loss.

I am finding it very interesting and reassuring reading all the different experiences here.

Day 3 for me. I felt very irritable and tired last night with a slight nagging headache - not improved by the news. I opened Twitter and there were many people giving up on Dry January; I didn't feel tempted though as I know how much I need a rest from alcohol and I am also worried about dh's drinking so want to stay on course for him.

I had another hot shower and rubbed lots of magnesium in, got into bed super early and watched Ghosts on my iPad, which cheered me up! I slept well again - I can't recommend magnesium spray highly enough.

DH and I both had a glass of Fentiman's ginger beer last night, which was nice and fiery. I'm definitely going to try the Kombucha after reading the recommendations here!

wizzbangfizz · 05/01/2021 16:19

@CandyLeBonBon I know I can't remember the last time I did 5 days without it!

CandyLeBonBon · 05/01/2021 16:25

Not gonna lie I'm fancying opening a bottle. I'm not craving it. I just want something to relieve the monotonous tedium of life.

Is it wrong that the thought of life without a ripple feels utterly grey?

I know that's because I use alcohol to bury my problems!

Except I've been really productive today! Got my tax return done, applied for business grants, made appointments- I've been on fire and with a clear head so 100% focussed.

I'm just so BORED though. Interesting how alcohol helps fill up the cracks eh?

Hohofortherobbers · 05/01/2021 16:39

Swiftyfifty, I know what you mean about wine keeping you moving, I am also a little sluggish, however a cup of strong coffee seems to help! Well done all on day 5!

CumbrianExile · 05/01/2021 16:40

I didn't know you had to update the calendar in the app! I have just got some badges eeek!

Goodiebagh · 05/01/2021 16:48

Stood and had a look at the 0% beers when shopping today. I genuinely like the taste! Unlike AF wine, im yet to find a good one.
Didnt get any though as it felt a bit early in DJ!
Got some green tea which i hate Hmm

teelizzy · 05/01/2021 16:50

Hello checking in as I am heading into the (wine) witching hour on consecutive day 2. First full day back at work since 11 December due to catching Covid and Christmas holidays. Will do half an hour then go for a walk to change it up.

Slept like a log last night.

If I'm bored well there's my knitting, a pile of books and piano practice to get on with. I tell myself

Smile to you all, good to have the support

Howshouldibehave · 05/01/2021 16:53

Why am I not sleeping like a log-this is so unfair!

I suspect it’s because I’m drinking tea in the evenings!

What is everyone else drinking in the evenings? I only want answers from people who are sleeping really well Grin

I'm a rabid tea drinker and drink about 10 cups a day right up to bed time!
CoronaIsWatching · 05/01/2021 17:08

Getting to the end of day 5 for me now, no problems so far apart from the vivid dreams last nights, though these should stop after a few nights. I think from Thursday I may start to struggle.

I'm just having diet coke with ice or squash. No tea or coffee after 8, I'm always snorkling by 12

We'll all have svelte and skinny livers in a few weeks Grin

Ahhh, maybe that’s where I’ve been going wrong Wink

Me too. This did make me laugh.

Lockdown snorkelling is the way forward!

BinkerTell · 05/01/2021 17:46

I'd love to be snorkelling somewhere tropical right now!

I have just ordered a weighted blanket to hopefully help, with my poor sleep as it's really affecting my mood which is what is likely to make me pick up a drink.

I know I won't drink today.

Humphriescushion · 05/01/2021 18:06

Day 5, yesterday was craving a bit but ok today but missing chocolate since have decided to try and lose some weight as well. Well done everyone not sure i could have coped with the prospect of children not in school on top of this!

I am literally crying with laughter! 😂😂😂. Just looked for a snorkelling emoji but sadly there doesn't appear to be one! 😬😬
