Hello everyone, may I join please? Have been reading all the books and decided I finally need to get a grip. This seems to be a nice chatty supportive place so hopefully I'll get some tips from you all. Aiming to go AF Mon - thurs. Only drank 2 glasses last night instead of my usual bottle or more and went to bed early then was shocked at how long and well I slept. Body is obviously crying out for me to give it a break.

NC4Now · 02/01/2020 14:05

Hi Tipsy - perfect username for this thread 😂 Welcome aboard! I’m sure you’ll find some good support here.

Bastard Yorkshire’s indeed Frouby. I’m from Lancashire so it’s Aunt Bessie’s all the way here. I bet you made your own didn’t you?
I’ve not done toad in the hole for ages, actually. I might put that on the menu this week. It’s proper comfort food but with loads of veg and gravy it’s pretty healthy really.

MadameF · 02/01/2020 15:31

Welcome Tipsy! I'm so glad you slept well - hopefully that will inspire you to drink less. I managed AF Mon - Thurs for 18 months without a problem when I was single, but it's more complicated when your OH lives in and enjoys an evening glass of wine.

NC4 I checked the recipe I used and indeed toad in the hole isn't too unhealthy at all. I cooked it with veggies and a few potatoes, but really the batter mix fills you up so potatoes aren't really needed. I used up the Christmas dinner gravy with it. DH (French) and DD's BF (also French) really enjoyed it, but as they are both Breton and crêpes and galette saucisses (a sausage in a savoury pancake) are the regional specialities here it isn't really a surprise they enjoyed toad in the hole.

Christmas tree came down today, as it was a real one it was rather dried out so just as well. House has had a good clean, missing the shed cats a little less especially as took the the one we kept to the vet today and he has a broken leg so that will probably cost a fortune Shock but he is a lovely cat. Off to the pool now to do my 2kms.

longestlurkerever · 02/01/2020 16:02

Afternoon all and welcome Tipsy. All this food talk is making me hungry. I rarely have a proper roast with yorkshires these days because of dh's diet, though we will have roast chicken today.

AF last night, which was easy enough. Went out for a curry with the dc and has a nanny state then drove. Watched a film called marriage story on Netflix which was good but a bit painful viewing.

Tonight will be harder as already fancying a glass of wine but hope to be AF. Went to science museum with friends who got married the other day and our respective kids. Was too busy so ended up in the V and A with the older ones being hyper and showing off. They are back in front of screens now. Am kind of ready for them to go back to school tbh though wouldn't mind another week off to myself. Still, dd1 and i are going to the harry potter studio tomorrow which should be fun, and then we have a weekend in Brighton as a farewell to the holiday season.

longestlurkerever · 02/01/2020 16:02

Ps get well soon kitty!

Flossie44 · 02/01/2020 16:34

Ooooo frouby, the sound of your Yorkshire puddings sound fab!! As does your toad in the hole Madame!!
I’m doing veganuary so can’t have either unfortunately but that’s going on my ‘look forward to February’ list!!!! I’ve never done vegan before but have been veggie for a year. I am missing a decent cup of builders tea though!!
I was dry yest, and dry sat. So that’s 2 under the belt this week. Planning on dry tonight but. Any promise myself as I really fancy a glass. So won’t beat myself up over it. Off to stay with my parents tomorrow night who are doing dry currently so won’t be able to drink there. Then off to London sat til Tuesday!!
Will miss you longest!! Although at coming back towards the end of January as Dd is being admitted to hosp for a few days.

Hi to everyone else. X

Flossie44 · 02/01/2020 16:34

Frouby - how’s your auntie? X

Flossie44 · 02/01/2020 16:35

Bloody hell..sorry about the typos!! Note to self..read posts before posting!!!!! 🙈

Frouby · 02/01/2020 16:36

NC I did make my own, it uses up 4 eggs per dozen puds (made 2 doz) so it's a good use of what I already have in. I find them pretty easy. Foolproof recipe is 140g plain flour, 200ml milk and 4 eggs. Make sure your tin is screaming hot, oven om highest setting. Then as soon as they are risen and starting to go crispy brown on the tops, turn oven down to 200 for last 10 mins or so. Depends very much on your oven though, it needs to be able to maintain a high temp.

Dh and ds wanting another load of yorkshires and mash today to use the last of the leftovers up with. Sigh. Really cba. But gave dh a lecture this morning on being frugal and using up stuff we already have to save money. Accounts looking a bit bare at the minute after a very expensive December. And I do hate wasted food but am not actually that hungry.

Still thirsty though, just opened a bottle of bud. Fml.

Trying to be good i bought myself some alcohol free beers. Remind me to never buy the cheapest ones... they sort of taste like fizzy calpol 🤢 never again.
Add to that my kids are losing the plot... id love a bud too! I do think its gettin to the point where we all need our routines back.
@Madamef poor kitten! Hope hes alright!

Waterandlemonjuice · 02/01/2020 18:47

Hi everyone. Welcome Tipsy!

Frouby, the meal sounds amazing but a lot of work.

Longest and Flossie, well done on being AF.

Madame, poor kitty, I hope his leg mends soon.

Dionysa woo hoo on a day AF as well. And lol at my life sounding James Bond ish, ha ha, thank you, it is indeed very nice in parts 😊

We are home and it’s nice to be back. Cleaner has been and we haven’t been here to mess it up again so the house looks great, clean sheets etc, bliss. I’m definitely not doing dry January until Sunday as dh is still off work and we are going out together tomorrow night. Dd is at a friend overnight and ds is away too but may be back tomorrow, we’ll see. He’s sounding happy on the phone though so that makes me happy. I’m quite looking forward to dry January though. There was some gorgeous wine left for us in the welcome pack in our holiday cottage and we opened it last night expecting it to be hideous (which for me is oaky or sweet / medium wine) but it was really fab. I haven’t come across it before and would never have ordered it in a restaurant but I’m going to buy some for February I think. It’s called False Bay and is a South African Chenin blanc. It was vanilla and citrusy sorry to sound like a wine expert, I’m not, at all.

Had lunch on the way back and I had a glass of wine so I’m not AF and will open wine later as there is some cold. Must remove all alcohol before Sunday to make it easier to do dry January!

longestlurkerever · 02/01/2020 19:00

Forgot it's Thursday which means dh is going out so odds on AF just went up. Will have bath and early night with book or crap telly.

Welcome home water, and enjoy your clean house.

NC4Now · 02/01/2020 22:14

I think we're all slowly drifting back to normal, aren't we? Hope your kitten's soon on the mend Madame. Toby has just been swinging off the new bunting I've strung across the fireplace where the Christmas bunting was. It's a miracle he hasn't broken his leg either.

Time to don the cloak of sobriety Longest? I really want to get mine on but I'm still working (evidently...)

Feeling resentful about the website I run. I took it on as a kind of favour but it's taking up too much of my time and attention. I need to work out how to drop it without burning bridges.

Planning ahead for my first AF weekend. I'm going to go to the cinema with my mum on Saturday and maybe the gym on Friday night. I'm still at war with the clutter and chaos here but hopefully a weekend on the wagon with the boys away will give me a bit of a headstart.

Waterandlemonjuice · 02/01/2020 22:37

Drifting back to normal is a good way of describing it NC4.

I didn’t drink any wine tonight, dh made me a martini and I drank it but I then decided not to open any wine, I feel too rubbish tbh after all the food and drink of Christmas. So although it’s not been an AF day today it’s not far off it tbh. I think I will drink in moderation tomorrow night as we’re going out and then do day 1 AF from Saturday. I’m having The Fear a bit so I need another reset and to get used to being AF again.

Flossie44 · 02/01/2020 23:16

Water. That’s a good plan. Well done on moderation. Sounds like you have control.

NC4, that is indeed a good way of describing us. Getting back to normal. After a complete whirlwind hey.
I wasn’t af tonight. Drunk 3/4 bottle of wine. Enjoyed it very much!! Wish I didn’t. But I did!!

Accidentalaccountant · 03/01/2020 05:32

Day 1 2 and a bit glasses of wine. Day 2 2 glasses and sadly this is an improvement. Small steps

Flossie44 · 03/01/2020 06:27

Accidental...we are all on the same path lovely. All walking the same steps at different rates. You should be proud of any achievement. Well done. An achievement to me is if I leave more than an inch in the bottom of the bottle. (I’ve always left an inch to try and sooth myself into thinking I’ve done good and not finished a bottle!!)

Last night I left 2 inches in the bottom. Was pleased with myself on one hand. But on the other hand hadn’t wanted to drink, so pissed off with myself too!! Also woke really early with hideous beer fear. Shaking etc. Just horrid. Driving to my parents for the night tonight so going to try and be dry, or at least very moderate!!
I don’t know why I do this to myself. I feel so good after doing an af night..fresh the next morning and mentally and emotionally secure. When I’ve had a drink, all that goes out the window and I feel so shit!! Fml

Frouby · 03/01/2020 07:28

Flossie I am drinking for the sake of it as well. 4 bottles of bud last night just because they were in the fridge.

Have got a cunning plan though. Am a fucker for little bottles of beer. Think there are about 5 or 6 left in the fridge. Once they have gone that's me done with beer. May have a gin but no more beer until at least February. Dread to think how much weight I have put on during December 🙈.

Should be slightly more moderate this weekend anyway. Got a kids party 4pm to 6pm today, then a surprise 70th tomorrow night which I am driving to so won't be opening anything at 4pm which is what I have been doing.

Tree coming down today, going to sort the fridge and cupboards out and see what crap we have left from Christmas and start thinking about a meal plan for next week.

I will be quite glad to get back into a normal routine and get my house back together. Plus get everyone back to work and school. Am properly peopled out now, need some time on my own. Love my little family but we have been living in each others pockets for 3 weeks now and think we have all had enough of each other.

Dionysa · 03/01/2020 09:46

Catching up...

Did not manage Day 2, though this pisses me off as I had no reason at all to drink last night, other than feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Had a crap night's non-sleep as a result.

I was at work yesterday, and really enjoyed seeing everyone going about their normal business again. The stress levels only increased when I got home to three teenagers bouncing off the walls.

Tree is coming down today, thank God.

Flossie, two days is brilliant!!

Improvementsunderway · 03/01/2020 10:00

I was AF yesterday. Ive done better in the last week than in the whole of last year. Was hoping to wake up refreshed but ive woken up with heaps of pain (i have chronic back problems) so much for being AF! Still, quite happy that i mange to down 2 sickly AF beers and left it at that. Going for lunch with some friends that are visiting from abroad but bringing the kids so im not planning on drinking. And i have a fridge full of the sickly stuff that i can tuck into tonite. Wish me luck if i do 2 days straight AF itll be breaking a record for me. How sad does that sound!? Ha!
Water , accidental, well done on moderating!
Flossie those 2 inches could have been zero!
Frouby good plan om the bottled beer! I have two pints in the fridge and i have to admit i dont want to buy anymore but i dont want to drink those and know i have none! Its scary! Haaa!

Dionysa · 03/01/2020 10:02

Improvements, I'd think that 2 days straight was a massive achievement.

Becks Blue is ok!!

Waterandlemonjuice · 03/01/2020 11:54

Frouby I feel the same, I love my family but it’s been lovely having time completely alone this morning now we are home and have scattered to our areas of the house. Good plan on the beer front.

Flossie I think that sounds good, an inch or more left in the bottle, I’d like to get to that. Sorry you feel rubbish though.

Accaccountant that IS moderating, well done. Unless you meant 2 bottles not two glasses!?

Dionysa sorry to hear of crap nights sleep and stress, have an inadequate 💐

Improvement, well done, that’s really good going. Sorry about the back pain though.

I feel loads better for no wine last night and had the best nights sleep I’ve had in ages. Did a ten minute Calm meditation before sleep which meant I went off like

Dh and I are going for a walk in a bit if I can be arsed, I’m on the sofa right now with a cat on my lap so it’s very tempting to stay here reading tbh. Ds is about to come home and is bringing a girl from university so that’s interesting. She’s driving him and it involves the M25 so I’ll be pleased when they’re here safely tbh. His friend crashed his car on NYE and therefore missed a NYE night out but thankfully was fine although his car was written off. Young adults driving = scary, “a whole new world of fear” as one of my friends puts it (her son is 22 as well).

Dd has just asked if I’ll give her £59 for Calvin Klein underwear which would be a NO but I contributed £20 so she still fleeced me really as I wasn’t intending spending anything on her today! When either of my children starts a sentence with “I was wondering...” it usually involves money or favours from me to them.

I’ve been browsing the Dry January Facebook group and it’s full of people on their second year totally AF. Never mind, it’s quite motivating so I will keep reading.

When did this thread group start, does anyone know? I think I started posting in 2018 when I did an 8 week AF stint but I might go back and look.

Waterandlemonjuice · 03/01/2020 12:41

I just checked, my first post on these threads was Aug 2018 but you were on thread 3 by then! ♥️

Dionysa · 03/01/2020 12:44

When either of my children starts a sentence with “I was wondering...” it usually involves money or favours from me to them

^^ This, in spades!

Also agree re driving. I just put my head in the sand about it all, rather than think about my DC being driven around be people we've known since they were toddlers. No driving lessons here due to lack of funds Sad.
