Join us for tips and support for encouraging a more healthy relationship with alcohol. Whether you want to drink less, or not at all, stay in your units or just cut down this is the thread for friendship, support, tips and ideas.

Absolutely no judgements here, but there will possibly be swearing.

Dion 💐💐💐 - we've all been there

Ahhh atToby, great name.

Mdme, you are very lithe and fit! Great photos

Frouby, glad dd had a good time

Day 3 AF here, longest AF in AGES

Waterandlemonjuice · 23/07/2019 21:00

Longest well done on being AF

Dionysa · 23/07/2019 22:11

Thanks, Tryers. I'm going to try to keep up now. Combination of 14+ hour work days and wine/gin is hopeless.

Frouby, I'm glad your DD is back safely and that she had a good trip. Your DS is a little star.

Madame, you are inspirational.

NC4 a kitten!!!! Has to be easier than a teenager.

Water, well done on Day 3.

Agree that we should make our way round all the Tryers' houses. I don't think there would be much moderation.

I managed to moderate this lunchtime when offered wine, but only because I was so hungover from last night. Would like to get a couple of AF days under my belt. I did manage Sunday, but again that was hangover related.

Coco, hello. Your consumption might not be ideal, but it's better than mine Blush

Longest, I hope your DDs enjoy a bit of a break from routine. They are still only little, and they must be exhausted. That said, my DD is 15 and still has tearful bedtime meltdowns.

I have lost track of the school holidays, but I think we are in Week Four. Only six more to go. FML. What are you supposed to do with two bored teenagers, no time (work), and absolutely no spare money??? All their friends are away, which is not helping.

Can't begin to think about DP and all the problems with him, as I go round in mental circles and get nowhere. He is not always very kind, though.

Senseless, how are you coping? I know what you mean about it being difficult to reconcile different famililes, jobs, schedules etc. Not easy.

Flossie44 · 23/07/2019 22:19

Flying through

Hi 👋🏼 to everyone

No moderation here. Just doing damage to my liver yet again!! Fml

NC4Now · 23/07/2019 22:25

Oh Dion 😢 I’m sorry you are feeling rotten. It sounds like you are seeing things fairly clearly re DP and I remember just how shit it is when you can’t ignore it any more.
You’re an incredible lady in tough circumstances. Don’t you forget it, and please don’t go beating yourself up.

We may have had a change of tack with kitten names. His dad’s called Bilbo Baggins and DS2 (massive LOTR fan) thinks we should carry on the theme and call him Frodo. Such a hard decision.
I think we’ll try them both out.

Frouby I’ve heard Bruges is lovely. There’s a film called In Bruges but I was ratted when I saw it, so couldn’t tell you if it’s any good. Gangsterish I think.

Wave to Mme, Longest, Water and Coco.

Definitely not dry here. Sunshine, innit? ☀️

Orlandointhewilderness · 23/07/2019 22:35

Hello all, I'm on day 6 AF - mind if I tag along?
Usual story for me, busy life, child and wine at the weekend now also most night is the week and I've had enough of it. My DB has been AF for 2 years and recommend a vlog thingy on YouTube called alcohol mastery which I'm finding good watching.
Onwards and upwards!

SenselessUbiquity · 23/07/2019 23:08

Hi everyone

Dion, sorry you're struggling. I think you need to talk to someone about your DP and get some stuff out in the open. I'm here if you want to do that here. It's hard to moderate drinking when things are stressful.

Welcome Orlando and Coco.

I did well last week with a good run of AF days and then as soon as my parents got here, I lost the off switch. So much wine on Sunday and Monday. Tonight I've had two small glasses and that feels better. Tomorrow, none would be better. I feel stressed and claustrophobic and that makes it hard to stop drinking but of course the drink weakens you so you're not managing what you're supposed to be doing so well.

Frouby · 24/07/2019 06:43

Morning all

Just checking in.

What an awful nights sleep, it was ridiculously hot then thunder and lightening. Feel like I have only catnapped all night. Now got a fun packed day with 2 x 5 years olds, an almost 2 year old and a school run mum friend at the Butterfly House, which is fantastic if anyone is in Sheffield over the summer, but exhausting.

Dd staying here and hope she gets a really good sleep. She looked shocking yesterday. Took them to ponies but she didn't even want to ride she felt so rough.

Wasn't dry yesterday. Fml. It was apparently lager weather. Am ok with I think, we don't get many weeks we can sit in the sun and have a few beers.

Flossie44 · 24/07/2019 07:34

Frouby - two 5yr olde would deffo make me excited about wine o’clock!!

NC4 - when I was younger I had a parrot called bilbo baggins, then another one called Frodo!!!!! Think it’s a fabulous name and has some meaning to it for your boys too.

Dion - always here for you my lovely. The processing of such thoughts is the darkest of times. Go easy on yourself. Your head feel like a washing machine..try and take one thought at a time and process them individually. Sending you mahoosive hugs lovely xx

MadameForest · 24/07/2019 09:19

Morning all,
Welcome to Orlando and Coco, I hope you find this very friendly thread helpful!

Good luck today with the kids Frouby

Dion hugs, I know it is a very difficult situation with DP and charming bastards are hard to ditch!

NC4 when do you pick up Toby/Frodo?

Water you are doing well to be AF well done!

We didn't have the thunderstorms last night, but sleep was very hard with the high temperatures. Yesterday evening our club run was done at 38°c, not easy, then drinks after, I nearly threw up after a beer and just stuck to water. I can't drink alcohol when it is really hot, so moderating is easier this week. Temperatures due to hit 40°C again today, so difficult to get work done outside.
Have had to buy fans for the first time ever to keep the house bearable.
Need to get rid of kittens, they are rapidly becoming less cute......, a bit like children when they turn into teenagers.

NC4Now · 24/07/2019 09:19

Hungover to high heaven here. And a busy work day ahead. FML.
Been doing so well recently too.

longestlurkerever · 24/07/2019 09:35

Wave everyone, especially welcome Coco and Orlando. Dion just sending hugs and NC4 I vote Frodo.

Day 1 of holiday and already had first argument with DH about mental load and logistics re tomorrow's pick up. Ugh. He's attempting to work from home with dd1 lolling about the place reading/watching telly. I had booked multisports camp but it is baking hot and she's shattered so we agreed to give it a trial run. I give it till 11am before he asks me for multisports details.

Was not AF either, and sorely tempted not to be tonight but will see.

First day at work under BoJo...

NC4Now · 24/07/2019 10:26

Same here Flossie. Hungover to high heaven. Today is going to be tough. FML.

NC4Now · 24/07/2019 10:29

Oh, that was weird - my first post didn’t show till I posted the second.

Eek, good luck Longest. I was at my friend’s house yesterday. She has three boys all in primary school. By 3pm she was broken.

School holidays are hard.

Dionysa · 24/07/2019 17:15

Longest, how did it go?? (with DH/DD1 and the BoJo Regime...)

NC4, "school holidays are hard" is my life in four words. I think there was a phase when mine were about 7 and 9/ 8 and 10 when it wasn't so bad as they were still willing to go out with me to playgrounds etc. Now, though, they have no shared interests, hate one another, and see no point in doing anything unless it involves buying them something. FML. How is the hangover?

Thank you to you all for being so kind (hugs and supportive words all very much appreciated, Longest, Senseless, MadameF, NC4, Flossie)

Flossie44 · 24/07/2019 17:57

NC4 - how’s the hangover?

Longest - I too was thinking how your day panned out?

Dion - how you feeling today?

Frouby - is it beer in the garden weather today?

Madame - that sounds HOTTTTTT!! But you really are fab at moderation..the hot weather makes me want to drink more!! If that’s possible!!

So school finished today for dd2 (dd1 finishes last week). I am SOOOOOO relieved!! When she’s with me I can relax. I know what’s happening. Although I totally get you all with the school holiday stress!!
Dd1 has driven me mad today. Mainly due to the fact I wouldn’t pay £40 for her to have gel and shellac nail extensions done. Wtf!!!!! Apparently ALLLLLL her friends have them!! Well weirdly I spoke to parents who deny this. Funny old thing!!!!
Off on hols Friday so been busy packing and organising. Having wine because ‘well I may as well worry about it when I get back now, hey?!’ Ffs

longestlurkerever · 24/07/2019 20:04

Well although DH texted at 10:38 to say she was getting fidgety, apparently she was good in the end. And good old friend is taking her back for a playdate after pony day tomorrow so row was for nothing in the end.

Still no justice secretary, though it's not Raab, which is something. We had outgoing one's all staff event which was quite emotional really, even though he's not been there long. Felt like he may have been the last of a breed - he was a Tory, but he was our Tory, and at least had respect for the rule of law.

Tomorrow is going to be scary hot. We are all burning in hell now. Dd2's nursery are putting a paddling pool up at least.

Am hoping DH is tempted by wine as will feel bad suggesting it but really want some. Is that fucked up?

Frouby · 24/07/2019 20:30

Definetly was beer in the garden weather Flossie. Was very tired, hot and sweaty when I came home. Left at 9am, in just afyer 4pm after a full day of traipsing round, looking at stuff and making sure 3 kids had the most amount of fun possible.

They loved it though. Friends little boy said it was the best day of his life bless him. All 3 fell asleep in car on way home. And if anyone is wondering you can fit 1 high back booster, 1 joie stages and 1 stage 1/2 erf car seat in the back of a warrior pick up. With a little bit of wriggle room. Was a lovely day though. If anyone is over this way in the holidays with dcs definetly for to the Butterfly House at Sheffield. It's a lovely day out for little ones, would say 8 or younger is the best age.

Have got blacksmith first thing in the morning then after that nothing booked in until friday afternoon. Am knackered already after week 1 of the holidays 😭😭😭

Waterandlemonjuice · 24/07/2019 21:16

Hello everyone, I hear you on the school holidays, dd is wafting about being bored or wanting lifts which we can’t give as we are working. It’s week 3 or something with weeks and weeks yet to go.

NC4 commiserations on the hangover.

Ffs re fucking Boris hey?

Madame, lol at kittens and teenagers ha ha ha

Im on day 4 AF here, came home from work early as I didn’t feel well so not remotely tempted. Longest AF for ages, I still look shit though.

Waterandlemonjuice · 24/07/2019 21:17

Welcome orlando and coco

MadameForest · 24/07/2019 21:44

Longest no not feeling fucked up, normal, what a day, to have Boris as PM 😳 I'm in shock too, thankful for Macron here.
I'm sitting outside, it's nearly 11pm and it is 29C, so even less sleep tonight. But it is so nice sitting outside in short sleeves I feel dreadful complaining.
Going out on boat tomorrow will probably fry.
Congrats on day 4 AF water!
Hope you feel better tomorrow Flossie and NC 4

NC4Now · 24/07/2019 22:17

The hangover turned out to be a mental one rather than a physical one, thank God. But actually might have been PMT. I'm going to blame hormones for me insatiable appetite and thirst in recent days, but thanks for the kind words :)

Where is the Butterfly House in Sheffield Frouby? I lived in Sheffield when I did my undergrad degree and still regret leaving. I go and visit friends most years.

Madame send your kittens to me. I've just invested in a new kitten sized litter tray and scratch post. I've decided to sack off Tinder and become a crazy cat lady instead. I think we're picking up Toby/Frodo on Friday, but I need to check back when he's had his jabs.

Boris, eh? I can't say I'm surprised. It seems right that on the day he was elected we had searing heat, flying ants and thunder storms. Just watching news at 10 and seeing his new cabinet.

It's been a long day and I'm only just finishing work. Not like Longest though. Did Dh want wine?

Dionysa · 24/07/2019 22:44

Longest, you would probably say it isn't, but your job sounds very interesting. I'm glad it worked out with DD and DH. Did you end up with wine?

Frouby, you are a complete star, doing so much not only for your own DC but other people's, too.

Water, day 4? I can't even manage Day 1 (today being a prime example - an old NCT friend came round this evening).

Flossie, all my DD's friends have those nail extensions. Or so she says. Further investigation suggests they do. But she will have to do without. I spend a big fat fuck all on myself, so there's no way I'm spending £40 on her nails.

No holidays here, but I did have two days with DS. He is good company, on his own. We also have similar interests, which helps. DD is going away soon for a fortnight, for which I am mightily glad. Bad mother alert.

NC4, I think it has to be Frodo. I was thinking about it earlier, and one of my loveliest RL friends is a LOTR fan, so she would definitely say Frodo. So I am channelling her. Grin
