Selfish swines on trains

We're on a train with gcs. Dh's idea. I said it'll be packed. No it won't it's the middle of the day said he.
Yes it's rammed. We got on and dcs said we'll have to stand. I checked and there were 2 people spread over 4 seats. Shifted them sharpish. Eldest 2 sat there. Then another 2 with bags on seats. Yes also shifted. So we all got seats. I was more shocked at those spread over. They weren't massively overweight either. So shocked when I said you have to move.

Have people become even more selfish? I get trains now and again so maybe it's the norm? I'm glad I commute by car.

I am amazed that no-one before you had made them move up if the train was as rammed as you say! I'm sure that you weren't the only ones annoyed by them.
You do get a lot of selfish behaviour on trains to be sure, but you also get a lot on the roads! Personally I'd take it on the trains every time because it might be annoying and you have to stand but your less likely to die if an idiot is driving out of control 😳😳(but I'm a nervous driver so that's definitely colouring my view here)

LondonLass2026 · 26/10/2026 12:25

I do confront idiots on trains and buses who take up two seats for no reason.

Once I got on an extremely crowded bus in Chelsea, and some Sloaney looking girl had her handbag on the seat next to her. I asked her to move it and you'd have thought I'd asked her to join the army. The face on her! 😂 Makes no difference to me though. I couldn't care less what awful people like her think.

Another time on the tube I saw a pregnant woman standing and being thrown around, while a young woman was sitting comfortably (she kept glancing up so I know she'd seen the pregnant woman). I made her get up, which she did with false apologies to the pregnant woman, but spent the rest of the journey yelling at me. I just turned my back on her and told her to f off. I don't take crap from that sort of selfish idiot.

I left London a few years ago, but yes, people are incredibly selfish and awful. The rest of the country seems to be catching up with London now, too.

Pumpkinsaregrowingnicely · 26/10/2026 12:32

It isn't just trains. In church for end of year service for dc the very last seat was taken by a bloody handbag.
I asked it's owner if it really needed a seat and she huffily moved it..

Wow in church!

Well train going home is barely full. Except we're going past our stop and doubling back. Lots cancelled today. Dcs are happy enough.

Eight months pregnant on commuter train into London- not one person offered a seat ever.

That's really sad. I think they would if they were asked. But of course, you shouldn't need to ask.
When I was heavily pregnant (twins!) DH was shocked at how people (men) treated me - not making room on the pavement, for example. Mind you, I offered a pregnant woman a seat at a party once and it turned out she wasn't pg at all!

Lemieux7 · 26/10/2026 14:37

I completely agree - they presumably paid for one seat! Yes people are selfish and quite nasty these days as well.

BashfulClam · 26/10/2026 14:38

It annoys me when people meekly stand whilst people rake up extra seat. I’m the first to go up and tell them to move their bag, coat, whatever shit.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/10/2026 14:41

Just ask people to move/move their stuff, it’s not difficult. Some of us always move our bag when we see the train filling up. Others don’t, so just ask.

Can you read? I did.

Spoke to ds1 he's always on trains. He said lots of people are so shy they'd rather stand than ask people to shift bags.

OP did! But the point being no one should need to be asked.

Monty36 · 26/10/2026 14:46

I dislike travelling by train when it is busy. Partly because I spent years doing that. Standing all the way in or back, or both.
It is really bad form to hog a seat with your handbag. There is a train etiquette. And you did the right thing OP. If you have your bag next to you and the train is filling up you move it. Usually I kept it on my lap.
I have other hates on trains but yes, this is selfish.
Rammed trains are not nice. And in the autumn and winter a germ fest.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 26/10/2026 14:47

Whether on crowded buses or trains, I always ask people to move their bags, if needed. I ask politely enough - I do get the odd grumpy face or an eye roll, but nobody’s ever refused.

What really pisses me off on buses, is seeing - again and again and again - young women plonking themselves on the first available (priority) seats when there are plenty further back.

I’ve hardly ever seen a young man do it.
Please don’t anybody say they’ve probably got hidden disabilities. There are so many of them, so often, I simply can’t and won’t believe it.

Plus of course, when some really doddery old person with a stick, who actually needs the seat, gets on, they’re so engrossed in their phones - or pretending to be - that they have to be reminded to get off their selfish, ill-mannered arses, and give the seat to someone who actually needs it.

I have noticed while travelling that people will stand rather than politely ask someone to move a bag. That good old British politeness. I don't suffer it myself, I ask for the seat to be made available.

Whosthetabbynow · 26/10/2026 14:52

Trains, roads, shops; they’re everywhere

Ok, missed that. Jeez, no need to be rude.

AmandaHoldensLips · 26/10/2026 14:59

The Train Moron Movement really has gathered apace. Lack of basic manners is at an historic high.

fatphalange · 26/10/2026 15:07

How could they help that the seats weren’t required up until you got on and therefore needed them?
If me and a mate were sat on a table of four because those were the available seats when we got on at our stop, would we be ‘hogging’ all four seats as well?
You got on, found free seats and sat down. What’s the drama? ‘Shifted them sharpish’ 🙄

Crunchymum · 26/10/2026 15:09

We got on a train (myself and 3 DC) a few weeks ago, Saturday evening and whilst not rammed definitely busy.

Oldest two took a seat each and I managed to get a seat and youngest sat with me.

I was incredulous to see a man taking up two seats, one with his own arse and the other with his phone! I raised my eyebrows to the woman sitting opposite me. It was only when the man got off that I realised he was using a 3rd seat for his rucksack (it was out of my line of vision so I'd assumed there was a person sat in that seat). What an absolute cheeky fucker. There were people standing and I can only assume they thought a person who was ignorant enough to take up 3 seats to begin with, wasn't going to move his stuff when asked.

CheeseMakesMeFart · 26/10/2026 15:23

If you don't ask you don't get.

I had to ask for a seat on on several buses / trains when pregnant during a heatwave. Always asking for a bag to be moved, not a person.

Only one person refused, and she changed her tune when I told her I was going to launch it down the aisle or sit on it and squash it flat.

You have to be unafraid of asking for what you need. It's no good being timid and then whining about it afterwards.

I am OVER THE MOON that someone shares my pet peeve! Mine is slightly adjacent as I live in an area where the average age seems to be 79 so the priority seats are usually taken by someone I'd assume would need them.

However, I seethe at the people who take up an aisle seat leaving the window seat empty. Why?!

If you could make it that far down the bus, could you not shift one seat over?
When sitting in the aisle seat, why are you always so surprised and put out when someone asks to sit in the window seat?
Why are so many people meek enough that, when faced with a bus full of aisle-sitters and empty window seats, they just stand?

I relish the opportunity to step on the toes of an aisle-sitter.

Wistfultearia · 26/10/2026 15:50

Happens a lot. I always ask people to move their bags and to be fair most people smile and do it immediately.

angelos02 · 26/10/2026 15:56

What annoys me is that the people having to be told to shift their bags look at you as though you are the one in the wrong! No - you're the selfish idiot that thinks your shit bags are more important than people's comfort.

May I ask why you chose the young woman to ask to move and not any other passengers or male passengers?
