Selfish swines on trains

We're on a train with gcs. Dh's idea. I said it'll be packed. No it won't it's the middle of the day said he.
Yes it's rammed. We got on and dcs said we'll have to stand. I checked and there were 2 people spread over 4 seats. Shifted them sharpish. Eldest 2 sat there. Then another 2 with bags on seats. Yes also shifted. So we all got seats. I was more shocked at those spread over. They weren't massively overweight either. So shocked when I said you have to move.

Have people become even more selfish? I get trains now and again so maybe it's the norm? I'm glad I commute by car.

The worst is people putting their filthy shoes on seats. A pity train companies don’t put up signs and have a fixed penalty for it.

My main gripe on trains other than people being noisy is people who put their cases on and around seats. There is a problem with a lack of luggage accommodation on some train types but often the cases will fit in the overhead space.

I deliberately ask to sit on a seat if someone has a bag on it even if there are other seats available. It really really annoys me.

I've had that happen to me in a half empty carriage which was a commuter train and gradually emptying out more as we got further from London. I just moved to another two-seater.

I ignore people who try to make a point when it's not well made.

On a busy bus in Edinburgh we went upstairs. Me. Dh and ds10. One lad about 20 offered me his seat .
Early 50's so assumed well mannered not necessarily because im old !
His mate offered his up for ds but I said he was quite OK perched on my knee.
My dm always expected me to stand up ot sit on her knee if an adult was workout a seat. Age not relevant.
I've expected my dc to follow with that.

I’m assuming that’s not a typo, and trying to imagine what my DS10’s face would look like if I suggested he sat on my knee in public 😂 my children are all entitled to a seat. Oftentimes I’ll stand myself so they can sit.

Yes that’s totally fair. I only do it when the train is pretty much full. Of course I don’t when there are tonnes of spare seats. Apologies for seeming like a dick.

Maybe in the priority seat?

Maybe, but I would then assume she would say I asked the person in the priority seat to move for her.

I’m unsure of what’s stopping you from a) reserving seats when booking or b) telling people who are hogging space to move their stuff.

I don’t understand this. Why do you stand so your kids can sit?

Because you can't book seats on every train

It’s not easy to put a heavy case in an overhead space for many people

Then option b is still available. Just ask people to move their stuff.

I’d always sit in the aisle seat so I don’t get trapped in the window seat by a creepy guy.

Then I get to choose whether to move over for a woman or child. Or offer the window to a man.

I too sit in the aisle seat to avoid man spreading etc and to give myself a bit more room. That’s WHY.

Don’t most parents? If it’s a choice of me or them, I would rather they rest their legs and not risk being thrown about by the train or pushed up against by other travellers. Just a no-brainer, really. No big deal.

I guess it depends on on the age of the children!

Not at all, I don't especially target people with bags when the train is full but I will ask people to move their bags. They always do and I am polite!

Something needs to be done, because it’s horrendous how many people think it’s OK to stow their luggage in the wheelchair spaces then wander off leaving it unattended.
