Selfish swines on trains

We're on a train with gcs. Dh's idea. I said it'll be packed. No it won't it's the middle of the day said he.
Yes it's rammed. We got on and dcs said we'll have to stand. I checked and there were 2 people spread over 4 seats. Shifted them sharpish. Eldest 2 sat there. Then another 2 with bags on seats. Yes also shifted. So we all got seats. I was more shocked at those spread over. They weren't massively overweight either. So shocked when I said you have to move.

Have people become even more selfish? I get trains now and again so maybe it's the norm? I'm glad I commute by car.

I went away at the weekend. Train out, a man using up three seats of four: bags on the one next to him, his feet on the one opposite. Refused to move his stuff/feet.
Returning, quiet carriage with a man seating sideways (back against the window and legs over two seats) and conducting loud phone calls for nearly two hours, chasing money owed to him. He was so intimidating he went unchallenged even by ticket collector.
People breaking the social contract in this way is getting worse and worse. It's not right when anyone does it, but some people (generally women) are much easier to ask to shift over/.be quiet than others.

thebrowncatisback · 27/10/2026 18:22

standard behaviour for train wankers

just say excuse me and sit down

BananaCocktail · 27/10/2026 18:26

I paid £26+ for a trip into London. I am not moving for a child to sit down. Sorry, but the price of a ticket makes me want a seat

I am OVER THE MOON that someone shares my pet peeve! Mine is slightly adjacent as I live in an area where the average age seems to be 79 so the priority seats are usually taken by someone I'd assume would need them.

However, I seethe at the people who take up an aisle seat leaving the window seat empty. Why?!

If you could make it that far down the bus, could you not shift one seat over?
When sitting in the aisle seat, why are you always so surprised and put out when someone asks to sit in the window seat?
Why are so many people meek enough that, when faced with a bus full of aisle-sitters and empty window seats, they just stand?

I relish the opportunity to step on the toes of an aisle-sitter.

I first noticed this in Covid times, people would sit on the outside to make sure no one could sit next to them, understandable then, but some people just don't want to share, if it means you end up standing they don't care.

LetMeGoogleThat · 27/10/2026 18:30

I travel a lot on trains, and I'll always shift them! Its the totally oblivious look they give that cracks me up! Yes Betty you were so absorbed you missed the announcement, the people getting on and thought you could get away with it!

I had bloody patient zero opposite this morning, looked unwell and coughed constantly! Sat with her feet tucked up on the seat, eww 🤮

PigletJohn · 27/10/2026 18:30

People have always been selfish. It is not new.

Why do you stick your bag on a seat though? Does it need a seat? I never do this, my bag goes on the floor, I haven’t paid for it to have its own seat. It’s not up to other people to tell you that your bag doesn’t get to have a seat, you know people take priority over your bag.

If I get a seat my bag goes on my lap, not on the filthy floor of public transport, plus people can easily trip over bags on floors

Did you read the OP?

It's about people leaving bags and other belongings on seats when others are standing. She wasn't expecting anyone to move for her or her DGC.

You are on one seat, not with a bag on another. Very different.

The other option to someone who is reluctant to move a bag is to ask if you can sit on it, and look as if you will if they don't move it.

Bunnycat101 · 27/10/2026 18:36

There are certain trains that have different dynamics. For some reason, the 4.30 train out of London for me is always significantly nicer than the 5pm. Early mornings are generally civilised as everyone knows everyone wants an hour of peace or to snooze. I generally always got a seat when pregnant except once when there had been issues and cancellations. Someone in the corridor clocked a very pregnant me standing and made an announcement in the carriage. About 30 men got up and were falling over themselves to be the one to give me a seat. It was very embarrassing but I was glad to have it.

It is standard safeguarding advice to children and young women travelling alone on a bus or train to sit on the outside/ aisle adjacent seat to avoid being trapped in the inside seat.

I taught my girls to keep an eye out and if someone respectable looking approached looking like they wanted a seat, to offer the inside one proactively and if someone more scary asked, to offer them the inside seat explaining that they were likely to have to dash to the loo as feeling unwell so best on the aisle. 😁

Joking apart I remember a horrible incident being trapped in the inside seat of a train when I was in my 20s by a drunken man old enough to be my grandfather.

ForQuirkyFawn · 27/10/2026 18:39

I was on a bus in manchester and when some elderly people got on a young fella got up and offered his seat to one of them, however, before she could take the seat someone behind her just plonked themselves in the seat instead, it was extraordinary....

Trains, roads, shops; they’re everywhere

I was going up an escalator in a packed clothes shop the other day: the woman in front of me stopped at the top with her drag along basket and totally blocked the way off the escalator. I had to quite literally hurdle the basket to avoid getting trapped. Mind blowing selfishness.

Fiddy1964 · 27/10/2026 18:44

I ask them to show me a ticket for their bag, get puzzled looks. Then explain that unless the bag has paid to travel on the train/bus, it isn't entitled to its own seat over a person.

Booboobagins · 27/10/2026 18:47

As a regular commuter, taking up two seats it typical.

People do move if you ask them but there's no need to be rude. I normally ask if the seat is taken. They can say yes or no. They normally say theyre sorry, move their bag and that's it.

As an aside, our regional TOC is fond of saying that ‘you pay for a ticket, not a seat’ when they receive complaints about overcrowding. So, by their logic, whether or not you have a ticket bears no relation to whether you’re entitled to a seat. Not that I disagree with what you’re saying in the slightest.

Purplecatshopaholic · 26/10/2026 14:41

Just ask people to move/move their stuff, it’s not difficult. Some of us always move our bag when we see the train filling up. Others don’t, so just ask.

The whole point is, you shouldn't have to ask. People should be more aware when using public transport. Some think they have booked their own private area which includes extra seats for their coats/bags whatever. The self entitlement has no bounds these days. Did once ask the bag if I could have its seat, when it didn't answer, asked it again and to get its owner to remove it, so I could sit down. I have anklosing spondylitis, doubt the bag or coat does.

BeaTwix · 27/10/2026 18:53

I was on a busy train on Sunday so i had cleared the empty seat next to me to make it available. Other passengers didn't and continue to keep their bags on the spare seats.

A fellow passenger chose to sit next to me - then told me I was fat (I am, but I fit in the seat - we had the arm rest down) and then she complained that my knitting was distracting her. I had to keep stopping the podcast I was listening to (via my headphones) to hear these moans.

After the third complaint about nonsense/ stuff I couldn't change (well I could have stopped knitting but why should I have- I wasn't knocking into her, honestly) I suggested that she maybe went and sat next to one of the other people I could see solo in a double seat who might be slim enough for her requirements and not knitting.

Dorisbonson · 27/10/2026 18:53

I regularly put up with idiots with no headphones. Can't wait for the fines to be issued for it.

Today I had someone sitting next to me who must have smoked about 20 fags before they got on the train, had to get up and move. Just revolting.

Even on sandwiches? Swine are four legged beasts not people who leave their handbags on seats.

JakeyRolling · 27/10/2026 18:54

Sometimes it’s people that are getting on that are hard of thinking.

I quite frequently get on the train with three friends, so we take up a table of four. They get off a few stops before me (Not all at the same stop though) So by the end, I’m sitting on my own.

On a few occasions, I’ve had rude people pretend mutter “Selfish person taking out four seats” rather than, you know, asking “Can I sit here?”

No good deed and all that.

Oh come on, I also travel a lot by train. As a passenger you can see the train is full and stopped, you shouldn't have to wait to be asked.

CatMum27 · 27/10/2026 18:55

I’ve sat on people’s bags before now when they refused to move them! Doesn’t happen often though as most people will with no fuss if you ask. Most of them are just in their own world and/or chancing their arm at two seats. I never understand why people will stand rather than ask but I always do.

People in general are more selfish these days, including on public transport. Commuting regularly to London I see all sorts. I see some lovely behaviour as well though which helps to balance it out.

I have a disability that’s not visible (unless I’m having a bad day and need a stick) and I have a “please offer me a seat” badge but I still get filthy looks/abuse/asked to move on a regular basis. I don’t look like I need a seat so people think I’m hogging a priority seat but this is a dangerous assumption to make.

Lifeomars · 27/10/2026 18:58

Lemieux7 · 26/10/2026 14:37

I completely agree - they presumably paid for one seat! Yes people are selfish and quite nasty these days as well.

It's the nastiness I find so unpleasant and quite shocking at times. One of those bloody escooters went into my back, it should not have been on the pavement and when I pointed this out to the lad riding it he told me to fuck off. He was totally in the wrong but there was no embarrassment, no apology just verbal abuse.
